Dr. Laura uses N word 11 times

So I have a strange color to my skin. i look white to most people, mexican to mexcans, mixed black to others and everything else but asian. I have a olive skin tone becuase i am italian. this is where i am going with this. in high school i was the “spick” in the army i was the “whop” and i have been called “N-a” and “N-er”. The only time it was offensive is when someone is trying to be that way. The word itself has no power, it is the way it is used. I have friends of all colors and ethnisities (i know it is mispelled) and we have never had a problem with any of them (words). i have gone to a lot of places where i was the only guy who looked like me and i had some looks. My friends and i laugh and continue on our business. context and intent is important, more so then the words being used.

to clarify, i am not saying using a offensive word is ok in a context just that you need to look at that as well. Also i know and understand not everyone feels like i do in cases like these and i accept that.

edit: why is only the n word censored? why not other racial slurs? have we really come to a point where only one racial slur is the point of interest?

The rap videos on the radio have the black singers using those words all the time. Not that I listen to them, but it is the music that kids who like dancing listen to.
It is relatively easy to explain to them even when they are young why they shouldn’t emulate this kind of thing, but not without leaving them with an impression of American black culture that is is a rather negative one.
The music is great for sure. Their dancing is inspired and always draws a big crowd in the mall. But the words sound no better coming out of a black man’s mouth than they would coming out of Laura’s (not that I even listened to the link).

It is uncouth.

When the media is black culture for them, the media very much is the message to them too.
It is a global sound. It is heard around the world, even in areas where there are not a lot of women like you to help give the innocents a more balanced perspective of what black people are more normally like.

I am pretty sure that there are quite a few words that would get us banned pretty quickly if we used them.

Has she ever made a racist statement before? Her comments were probably insensitive, but they weren’t racist. I hope her advertisers don’t abandon her because of this.
 
I favor ‘loser’ and ‘bottom feeder’ they are universally understood, they are gender, racial, ethnic and socio-economically neutral and everyone can relate to it (because at some point in a person’s life, we’ve all said or done stuff that make us all categorically eligible, even if just for a moment).

I did see the video of Dr. Laura. She was rude to the caller (who called in to talk about how she’d been disrespected, btw).

I firmly believe Dr. Laura fits in the loser category, that’s for sure.

In my opinion, people that use racial/ethnic slurs, no matter what, friendly or not, are definately bottom feeders.
 
A good friend (black) once called me (white) the “N word” affectionately. I later pursued the issue and he dubbed me an honorary black man. I haven’t checked to see if that allows me to use the “N word” and under what circumstances. I feel like I should clear it through him first since he’s my sponsor.

Possibly I have to make 4th Degree Brother before I’m entitled to use it. Of course, I’m using the internet while sipping a vodka martini, so rest assured that I’ve retained dual citizenship.

No.
I don’t know about “censored” but I certainly haven’t heard anyone use “guinea”, “spic”, “Polack”, “mick”, &c in ages, maybe decades. The ethnic joke which I grew up with likewise seems to have totally disappeared.

I would also be careful generalizing about blacks using the n-word to each other. Many do, esp. the young but many vehemently object.
Some, esp. the elderly reserve it for those they have no respect for as in, “He’s nothing but a G-- damn n----r”

That was genuinely funny. I also drink vodka martinis. Perhaps a reflection of the fact that I’m only half black?

My black relatives sometimes forget that my husband is white, which is funny. I suppose the day your black friends all greet you with “What’s up, Nig?” is the day we can consider this country Post-Racial. 😃

Yeah, it’s a youth thing. I’m quite young, so I’m usually around the young (20s and 30s). The elderly I know don’t use the Lord’s name in vain, though. They just say that someone is a “no account n****r”. I guess it’s similar to the way some white people will say that a fellow white person is a “redneck”. It’s synonymous with “low class”. When younger people want to say something is “low class”, they say that it is “ghetto”. Although even that word is sort of out-of-date. I don’t know what “the kids” are saying now.

I’m anti-pottymouth in general, though. Especially now that I’ve got kids. It’s one of the reasons we don’t watch television or listen to normal radio stations. Some of the language is really vile.

I’m surprised we haven’t gotten into all kinds of trouble with this thread.
 
I just listened to the exchange. “Dr.” Laura was belligerent and unprofessional. Here she was cutting off this woman, barely allowing her to get a word in edgewise and then disconnected her. She said that Jade needed a sense of humor about whites using derogatory terms. Also, that if you’re hypersensitive, then don’t marry out of your race.
Blacks voting for Obama because he is half-black had nothing to do with the caller’s quest for advice, but yet Laura got on her self-righteous soapbox and talked about the election.
I don’t know which “Dr.” in the media is worse: she or Phil Mcgraw?

P.S.- I’ve ridden the bus in urban areas for most of my life, so I’ve been made subject to many foul exchanges between Blacks, including the constant use the N word in reference to each other. It’s all the more ugly to hear it from Blacks.
 
She wasn’t saying that as an insult. She said, “If you turn on HBO to a black comedian, all you hear is n-----, n-----, n-----.” She wasn’t using it to insult the caller or blacks. Should she have said it? I wouldn’t have, but I don’t see a problem with the way she used it. As she even said, “I didn’t call anyone a n----, I just said the word.” As George Carlin said, “There’s no such thing as bad word, just bad thoughts and bad intentions.” So in context, I don’t really find it wrong.

What has happened to this word is that it was at first used as an insult, but blacks took it and made it there own.

And I’ve heard some people online criticize her Obama comments online. Again, she didn’t say anything wrong. Sure she called him “half black” but isn’t he? His mother is white. Sometimes I call him “half white.” So there’s nothing wrong with that. And yes she was right in saying that he was voted in by whites since they make up a majority of votes and the President was voted in by a majority. And as for the comment that many blacks voted for him because of his race, I wouldn’t doubt it. Have you seen the Howard Stern clip from YouTube? here it is (its only 2:30): youtube.com/watch?v=NyvqhdllXgU . Some guys even thought Sarah Palin was Obama’s running mate. How about the black tea partier who was called by many in the NAACP as an “Uncle Tom”?

This is completely right on! In the beginning of her answer/comment to this woman, she said that sometimes and with some people, there is hypersensitivity in the perception of racism. I would tend to agree with her on that.
 
She just appeared on the Larry King Show and said she will no longer do radio once her contract expires at the end of the year.

That clip doesn’t really prove anything other than there is a portion of the electorate that are ignorant when it comes to policies, issues and politicians themselves. You could do that little exercise in any country in the world with two white candidates, crisscross their policies, I’ve even seen it done where they showed a picture of candidate A and referred to him as Candidate B, and you’d get the same result. Cheap little exercise that proves nothing. I agree that Laura did nothing wrong.

There were exit polls, I believe NC was one of them where over 50% of his supporters admitted they had voted based on his race alone.

Exit polls are one thing, and if people admitted they voted for him there on the basis of his race alone, to the pollsters well that’s fair dinkum - but just asking politically ignorant voters switched questions doesnt prove anything other than there’s politically ignorant voters - which in my view is all that utube link showed. There’s no doubt in my mind some blacks voted for him for no other reason than he’s black and so are they. But as the good Laura pointed out, the majority voters were white and they voted for him too, otherwise he wouldn’t have been elected.
