Maybe this is what can happen to people if they think they can live life without God.

I am glad we have the Holy Bible and CCC as guiding lights.

From Corinthians we see:

1 Corinthians 7: 4-5

4 A wife does not have authority over her own body, but rather her husband, and similarly a husband does not have authority over his own body, but rather his wife.

5 Do not deprive each other, except perhaps by mutual consent for a time, to be free for prayer, but then return to one another, so that Satan may not tempt you through your lack of self-control.

From Pope John Paul II:
John Paul II also says that if the only reason a couple is having sex is to transmit life, then they may be in danger of using each other rather than loving each other (see Love & Responsibility p. 233).

Also, John Paul describes the “beatifying experience” of conjugal union as a foretaste of the joys of heaven (see TB, Dec 16, 1981 and Jan 13, 1982). In Love & Responsibility, by his detailed discussion of the husband’s responsibility - out of authentic love for his wife - to see that she achieves sexual climax (see Love & Responsibility pp. 270-278).

CCC States:

V. THE GOODS AND REQUIREMENTS OF CONJUGAL LOVE

1643 "Conjugal love involves a totality, in which all the elements of the person enter - appeal of the body and instinct, power of feeling and affectivity, aspiration of the spirit and of will. It aims at a deeply personal unity, a unity that, beyond union in one flesh, leads to forming one heart and soul; it demands indissolubility and faithfulness in definitive mutual giving; and it is open to fertility. In a word it is a question of the normal characteristics of all natural conjugal love, but with a new significance which not only purifies and strengthens them, but raises them to the extent of making them the expression of specifically Christian values."152
The unity and indissolubility of marriage

1644 The love of the spouses requires, of its very nature, the unity and indissolubility of the spouses’ community of persons, which embraces their entire life: "so they are no longer two, but one flesh."153 They "are called to grow continually in their communion through day-to-day fidelity to their marriage promise of total mutual self-giving."154 This human communion is confirmed, purified, and completed by communion in Jesus Christ, given through the sacrament of Matrimony. It is deepened by lives of the common faith and by the Eucharist received together.

1645 "The unity of marriage, distinctly recognized by our Lord, is made clear in the equal personal dignity which must be accorded to man and wife in mutual and unreserved affection."155 Polygamy is contrary to conjugal love which is undivided and exclusive.156
  • The fidelity of conjugal love
1646 By its very nature conjugal love requires the inviolable fidelity of the spouses. This is the consequence of the gift of themselves which they make to each other. Love seeks to be definitive; it cannot be an arrangement “until further notice.” The "intimate union of marriage, as a mutual giving of two persons, and the good of the children, demand total fidelity from the spouses and require an unbreakable union between them."157

1660 The marriage covenant, by which a man and a woman form with each other an intimate communion of life and love, has been founded and endowed with its own special laws by the Creator. By its very nature it is ordered to the good of the couple, as well as to the generation and education of children. Christ the Lord raised marriage between the baptized to the dignity of a sacrament (cf. CIC, can. 1055 § 1; cf. GS 48 § 1).

III. THE LOVE OF HUSBAND AND WIFE

2360 Sexuality is ordered to the conjugal love of man and woman. In marriage the physical intimacy of the spouses becomes a sign and pledge of spiritual communion. Marriage bonds between baptized persons are sanctified by the sacrament.

2361 "Sexuality, by means of which man and woman give themselves to one another through the acts which are proper and exclusive to spouses, is not something simply biological, but concerns the innermost being of the human person as such. It is realized in a truly human way only if it is an integral part of the love by which a man and woman commit themselves totally to one another until death."143

"The acts in marriage by which the intimate and chaste union of the spouses takes place are noble and honorable; the truly human performance of these acts fosters the self-giving they signify and enriches the spouses in joy and gratitude."145 Sexuality is a source of joy and pleasure:

2364 The married couple forms "the intimate partnership of life and love established by the Creator and governed by his laws; it is rooted in the conjugal covenant, that is, in their irrevocable personal consent."147 Both give themselves definitively and totally to one another. They are no longer two; from now on they form one flesh

I agree in that women SHARE the blame - sometimes. They are not completely at fault, of course. And sometimes men are just cheaters, no matter what. But if a woman treats her man horribly, it almost seems like, well, duh, why would he want to be with her - Of course he’ll cheat. Would he have cheated if she had tried her best to be a loving wife? Same for women. Would she have cheated if he had tried to be a loving husband? But, again, the word is SHAREd the blame. The cheater is ALWAYS at fault, whereas the spouse may SOMETIMES share the fault.
actually, studies have been done to show that affairs often times have nothing to do with a bad marriage. it has more to do with unresolved feelings–and seeking whatever it is he/she is missing through others. case in point–lacy peterson. she was pregnant, they seemed happy…he cheated, and then killed her and the unborn baby. look at john f kennedy–he cheated–his wife seemed to love him very much. i have personally known couples who seem to be very happy together–but one or the other cheated, and in the end, it came down to problems internally within the cheater’s mind, and had nothing to do with the marriage.

anyways–this man committed crimes. so, really, even if his wife was horrible to him, which something tells me otherwise–she sounded like a very classy, nice person–she didn’t deserve to be dragged through this.

Such good points guardian! I think you hit in on the head in your very first statement…I think that without God, we are all capable of our very worst selves.:o

[Dr. Laura was on the program to promote her new book, “Less Whining, More Living”… and they sprang the adultery discussion on her unexpectedly.

From some additional text buried in the article:

Schlessinger said later in the show that there are some instances in which it doesn’t matter what the wife does.

“If he’s sociopathic or narcissistic, all bets are off,” she said. “The woman can be the best person in the world, and he’s going to be a jerk.”

But most men aren’t like that, she said, adding, “The average husband longs for one thing, and that’s to be special to his woman.”

Kotb asked her if she would stand by her husband as Silda Spitzer and Matos did by theirs in a similar situation.

“If I had been a truly loving, caretaking, supportive wife, and my husband did such an egregious thing, his butt would be standing there by itself,” Schlessinger replied.

[Does Spitzer fit any of the descriptive adjectives … sociopathic … narcissistic …???]

WLS took her off the air here in Chicago about 5 years ago. She was removed because the homosexualists forced her off. I liked her and I suspect I still do. We need more honest people in this world like Dr. Laura.

The reality is that unless Dr Laura lived with the Spitzers, she should not be commenting on why Elliot took up with prostitutes. There could be a myriad of reasons why–none she should be commenting on, nor blaming his spouse. No one knows the realities behind closed doors…and even if…Mrs Spitzer was the worst wife on the planet, she can’t control her husband’s actions. We are responsible ultimately when we sin. I can’t go into the confessional, and ask for forgiveness for my husband–he must go. I have compassion for Eliot Spitzer and his wife–but I don’t believe in blaming his wife for his indiscretions…and breaking the law. Those were choices he made. Regardless, Dr Laura has no idea what went on with their marriage to give that type of ‘advice.’ I’m glad I stopped listening to her show a while ago…just my opinion.
From the bit I got, I’m sure she would agree she has no idea what went on in this case. I don’t think she was commenting on this specific case, she just set this case up to jump to a general point without actually getting into this specific case, because she probably assums of all those in her audience it may be an issue.

“If he’s sociopathic or narcissistic, all bets are off,” she said. “The woman can be the best person in the world, and he’s going to be a jerk.”

I would imagine that many powerful men are, if not narcissitic, a bit egotistical and feel entitled to sleep with young women. I don’t think in this case (or Bill Clinton, Rudy Guiliani, John McCain, Gary Hart, Ted Kennedy etc, etc, etc) it had much to do with whether or not their “egos” were stroked by their wives (or ex wives). I imagine they are surrounded by people who stroke their wittle egos all day long and think they mess around because they have women who are willing to mess around with them. Power can be intoxicating.

I heard Dr. Laura discuss the case. She made it quite plain that she was NOT discussing the Spitzer situation because she didn’t know the details of their particular marital situation.

Dr. Laura DID reinforce the generality that if someone is egotistical, narcissistic, etc., that “all bets are off”. I’m not a psychologist but the descriptions one can find about Eliot Spitzer seem to at least fit “egotistical” if not “narcissistic”. If the reports are true that he was prosecuting prostitution rings at the same time as he was engaging the services of one (which is true if this has been going on for decades as is alleged) then Mr. Spitzer appears to believe as if the law does not apply to him, just everybody else.

Dr. Laura is not generally treated very even-handedly by the press, so I would be skeptical of any report ABOUT what she said, I would be much more comfortable viewing a recording of an event and deciding for myself.

This is true. I have heard her misquoted several times. Her book, The Proper Care and Feeding of Husband’s, is actually very good and-despite the title-very fair to men. Yet, I have heard the book described in such a way that it sounds like the reviewers are discussing a totally different book.🤷

Dr. Laura gets so much unfair criticism, that I should make it up to her by AT LEAST getting the name of her new book right.

amazon.com/Whining-Start-Living-Laura-Schlessinger/dp/0060838337

“Stop Whining, Start Living” by Dr. Laura Schlessinger.

And let’s all pray for her … she discovered when she was in her 20’s that she had been baptized as a Catholic. Her positions on issues such as abortion are about as Catholic as you can get, so let’s pray for her to revert. She is soooo close, now.

Thanks for saying that, Al. I don’t have to be a fan to pray for her–wise words of yours today. :o

And so it is for the average wife too. When I don’t feel that from my husband I don’t plonk myself in the middle of an affair to make myself feel better. Why? Because I know it’s WRONG! Why is that so difficult for some people to understand?

Well put and thanks, Phemie, WG and Al. I think this is one of the greatest things about our Faith as Catholics that we have all the tools to pray our way out of many tough spots in life if we just open ourselves to Gods word and his Sacraments.🙂

I agree. If I marry an abusive jerk and I have an affair, the fault is still my own. It doesn’t matter how cruel and mean my spouse was or how neglected that I feel, I am the one who committed the sin and it is wholly on my head.

Just as a person can’t cause another person to be abusive, no one can be forced into an affair.

Of course, if the marriage is to be salvaged both people have to understand what they did wrong as individuals in the marriage. But neither spouse caused the other to do wrong. Wrong doing is an individual choice.

Dr. Laura has been speaking a lot about the fact that some women treat their husbands like idiots. I agree with her. Sometimes, it takes my breath away how blase’ our society is toward the emotional and verbal abuse that some women level at their husbands. And yes, some of the nasty comments that I hear women make about thier husbands should be considered as abuse.

But no matter how nasty some married people act, neither spouse is responsible for the other’s wrong doings.
