many years ago dr. laura was carried by my favorite radio station. they dropped her about 8 years ago. i used to listen to her. however, i couldn’t listen very long. i thought she was very hard on some callers, especially women and i thought she had a self righteous attitude.

i haven’t read any of her books though. i do think she is bright and has a lot of insight. she just seems a little mean like she is really bitter about something and enjoys shaming people.

so her books might be good. it is her radio show i would not recommend.

*I agree 7sorrows.

I also remember reading a few years ago, that she hadn’t spoken to her mom in years…probably a secret that wouldn’t have come out, had it not been for the fact that her mom was found murdered in her condo…and was probably laying there for weeks, the police said. Dr Laura hadn’t visited or talked to her elderly mom in years. I can’t judge, but I have a hard time taking family and relationship advice from someone who hasn’t spoken to her own mom in years.

Seems like a nice lady, but after reading that I stopped listening.*

i forgot about her not speaking to her mom for several years. i do remember when they found her mother murdered. that was sad. these people like dr. phil and dr. laura and i know there are others, i just don’t watch them - can be a little dangerous if people put too much in what they say. it seems a lot of them have some pretty big issues they never resolved, and like you say, who are they to be giving relationship and family advice.

*I clicked something and my post vanished…oops. lol

Yes…and everyone has problems to varying degrees. But, to tout that you’re an expert on family unity? To verbally beat people up over the phone because they haven’t talked to a brother, sister, mother, etc in years…and you yourself haven’t?? To talk about the importance of doing the right thing, and sacrificing for parents? To talk about honoring your mother and father, upholding that commandment? Her mom was nearly 80…get over it. And her mom lived alone clearly, because the police had to find her…she had been dead for some time…very sad! 😦 I don’t take advice from people who don’t follow their own.

I don’t begrudge anyone who listens to her, but I just don’t care for her, anymore.*

So if a drug addict tells me not to even try marijuana because it will lead to harder drug use, he’s not right??

Dr. Laura gives excellent advice no matter that she may not always be successful living it out.

Again, I was a stay at home mom for 7 yrs due to HER alone!

I know she is sort of rude at times, but what she says makes sense.

being a stay at home mom is very good. that was good advice. she could give good advice, but yet she could really pick on someone too. i used to hate the people who called in with the perfect lives and were just waiting for her to praise them for the wonderful job they were doing. not everyone’s life is perfect, no matter how hard you work at it.
they didn’t deserve to be ridiculed - but i guess that is part of talk radio.

Ailina,
My (ex) husband is in the same city and sees the girls frequently and we do things together for the sake of the kids but reconciliation is not an option since he will not go to long-term anger mgmt (he has been to court appointed, but it was short sessions that didn’t really help) and he still feels justified in having moved out, so he could do it again.

I got married as an atheist and even talked about leaving if things ‘didnt go well’…my fault for doing so. I didn’t have high standards in picking a man and my lack of belief in God was why. I knew what I was getting in the man that I picked…selfish of me to have done it because, sure enough, now my kids are in a broken home because I didn’t choose better.

It’s important to finish college and work a bit before marriage. Once you are married, there should be no reason to delay motherhood. And, yes, if we pick right to begin with, being a SAHM is not a gamble. It’s up to us and we have the responsibility to give our kids (and ourselves) men who will ‘do right’ over a lifetime. I see women (myself) not handle this responsibility with maturity over and over and over…

Dr. Laura points this reality out and I’m glad she does.
You guys are killing me!! LOL:blackeye:

Come on now… some of us thought we chose a very very well! (not because of the paycheck) They told us they loved us when we weren’t used to hearing it. They converted from being an Anglican (a minister’s son!) to RC before the wedding, they had traditional views and wanted us to stay at home and raise the children, etc etc… WOW they were the “one” all right. My family thought so as well!

Who knew that a couple years after the wedding and a couple children they would turn into a horror story? You try, another baby, try try again, another baby… by then alcoholism has totally changed this person.

And yes, I was the SAHM. Go ahead and tell me it was my fault.

*Yes this is what I mean. She could have toned down her harshness…I used to think it was her version of tough love which sometimes is needed…but again, when I realized her family situation, I thought, how dare you tell others about family unity when you haven’t spoken to your own mom in years, and didn’t even know she died! It would be one thing if she used her own situation as a teachable example to others…but, no, she would blast people who did the same thing she did. lol She hid that estrangement, until it came out in the news, when her mom died. I noticed she lost viewership after that. Again, own who you are…don’t pretend to be holier than thou, when you have problems like the rest of us.

She has given good advice…I just don’t care for her show…*

In the interest of being “charitable” I’m just going to let your comment hang there and radiate all it’s ugliness so you may bask in it in front of everyone.

I will pray for you.
I can always use more prayers, so thank you. But what exactly is ugly about telling women they are responsible for choosing the men they chose? (And vice versa… ) There are no arranged marriages in this country, your family can’t force you. There is no timetable. You can take as much time as you want to get to know someone before you marry them. When severe problems crop up, like the alcoholism you describe, and the woman claims she had NO IDEA, one of three things is usually true:
  1. He already had the problem, but hid it. It may have been less severe than it became later. Or he had character flaws that would indicate he would not handle difficulty well and might choose to escape rather than face it. The couple didn’t date long enough before getting married for her to see it. This is “bad choice by hurry.”
  2. He already had the problem, or the character flaws that predict it, and didn’t really hide it, but the woman is too invested in the relationship for whatever reason, and will not let go, so she puts on her blinders or rationalizes it away. She may think he’ll change, grow up, etc. That time and her love can make it better. This is “bad choice by willful blindness.”
  3. He really did have absolutely no problem before the marriage, no real character flaws, but then had a mental breakdown after marriage. This is just bad luck.
(P.S. These three can go the other way, too. Especially #1.)

In your description, you said, you try again, and then another baby comes, and you repeated that a couple of times. So, when a woman already knows her husband is an alcoholic, and keeps bringing more babies into the world to have that for a father… um, whose fault is it that the children have a bad father and she is more and more trapped? I agree with Dr. Laura that women have special responsibility in this area, because we carry the babies. Of course, the father who refuses to reform is at fault, but the mother chose to conceive a child with him knowing that he was an addict who was not sober, or had not been sober very long. That’s an awful huge risk to take! And the kids pay the price when women do that! (And I would say the same to a man with an addict wife!)

This really isn’t fair. Before her mother died, Dr. Laura didn’t talk about her much, to preserve her mother’s privacy. She did talk about it some, though, so to claim she hid it is not accurate. I know she wrote some about it in her book Parenthood by Proxy, and that came out before her mother died. But after her mother died, she started to talk more about why they were estranged. She tried many times to help her mother, and her mother pushed her away repeatedly. Finally, her mother cut her off and refused to speak to her any longer. Dr. Laura took care of her mother in what ways she could. I think the condo her mom lived in was paid for by Dr. Laura. But Dr. Laura has said that by the end of her life, her mother had cut off both of her daughters for years.

A child can’t force a parent to receive their love and respect. So to fault Dr. Laura for that estrangement, is, I think unfair.

A wife can’t force a husband to receive her love and respect. So for Dr. Laura to fault wives for that estrangement, is, I think grossly unfair.

Why do so many women stay in bad marriages for so long? Because our Church tells them marriage is for LIFE. So we hope and we pray, but things don’t always get better. They get worse. In the meantime, we get pregnant because it is our duty to please our husbands and obey them by being one in the flesh. So should we abort the children because their father has issues? Or should we use contraceptives?

I have never met a man who is perfect, although many seem to be when you first meet them. Some men are very good at hiding their true characters until after marriage. I was friends with my ex for years before dating him. We dated for five years before marrying. Yet, it turns out, I did not really know him at all. Neither did any of his friends and family.

I think shows like Dr. Laura’s can be inappropriate because she has to make snap judgements about people. Her judgements are very harsh, as it turns out.

I’m not going to fault you Salty, you are working on partial information which I guess isn’t fair to you while you are putting together your assessment and judgement of the demise of my marriage. I’ll just say you are missing the mark sweetie (that sounds better than wrong, right?) I don’t see the value in elaborating further because I have things pretty taken care of on my end. It may surprise you that I do not need or want your approval.

Don’t worry about my children, they are doing fantastically well and are very happy to be here! They would disagree with your questioning whether they should have been born obviously 🙂 I came to the realization a long time ago that the reason I was supposed to marry their Dad was to have them. Please humour me for a moment while I brag.

They are Marvelous, Intelligent, Wonderful, Talented, Compassionate, Loving, Priceless Boys!!! :D:extrahappy::angel1:🎉:egyptian:

I guess you missed on that dooms day predication as well. Still, I don’t fault you, how would you know?

Just a thought, and of course I am just going on what I read on this board (partial information). Perhaps working on a sense of humbleness, trying not to judge others (preach at either) and trying to relate to people with a bit more compassion might be a worthwhile endeavor. Your points make be taken more seriously, you may actually help some people with the time you spend posting and it would really be more appropriate.

Just my opinion of course.

On a general note about this board, I’ll have to say that I am taken aback by the amount of women bashing women. Maybe it’s that old high school competitive thing that is happing here? What is the conquest, who is holier? Who is the best wife/mother? LOL you’ll have to excuse me, I live with 4 boys and am very much in the boys world a lot of the time so I forget the silly way some women act towards each other:hypno: 😃

I think that an unstable marriage is a valid, serious reason for avoiding pregnancy using NFP.

Also, not all women pick wrong…TheresaAne: maybe you didn’t and hubby’s issues developed completely after marriage, but plenty of us ignore the warning signs and plow ahead due to selfishness, without giving a second thought about what kind of dad we are selecting.

I talk to moms in crisis pregnancies who want abortions. I hear their stories about men who they have sex with who then leave or take up with other women or have no job to support them and the kids. Over and over and over…

Bottom line, women must really do a better job of picking who we get involved with and we must set the standard high for our conduct and for those people that we will ALLOW in our lives. I think this is what Dr. Laura wants and we can all agree that women (generally speaking) can do a much better job of it than we are doing now.

I also speak about myself and my upbringing…I’m the product of a sleazy mom so I see women thru my experiences, too. It is safe to say that Dr. Laura sees a lack of domesticity in women and an increased level of immorality in women…I see it in the population at large, but in women in particular.

I have never listened to her before yesterday, but from what I heard she is entertaining but just okay as far as advise goes. She even said she didn’t like being mean even though people seemed to think she liked it. One person that called in about a parent issue she flat out told them that his parents threw away their parent card (which they did IMHO) and he had no reason to feel obligated to them anymore. His dad was dying and she said he didn’t even have to go see him or pay for the burial or anything. In this case I can understand why she would say that, but it goes to show we don’t always know what led to the dissolution of people’s relationships so us judging does no good.

I think the man upstairs had a pretty good idea when He decided that we lowly shortsighted people shouldn’t judge, only Him with His omniscience (knows everything), benevolence, and divine love should judge.

Another caller she did cut off but it made sense. The woman was calling in clearly upset that she and her husband were living with the husband’s parents. Dr. Laura asked where the husband lived before the marriage and where they had discussed living after the wedding and both answers were, “With his parents.” Dr. Laura then refused to let the woman speak as the caller seemed to want to complain and have Dr. Laura tell her, “Oh you need to move out, get your own place, ect” which DUH they should eventually, but Dr. Laura’s point is that she agreed to this arrangement. She DID marry the guy and so she has no right to complain about the situation she agreed to just because it no longer works for her or it is running longer than she’d like. I’ve lived with in laws for a time and it’s no picnic whatsoever, I can’t stress that enough! But I could have used this advise when I was going through it because yup, I choose to be there too.

Here’s my :twocents: So many people call her show hoping that she’ll say, “Oh yes I agree with you tell … that you were right.” and that’s just not likely to happen. Why should she waste air time listening to them when they have this huge buildup and it’s clear they won’t get their desired result? If you want to vent, get a girlfriend, if you want Dr. Laura’s brand of advise call her. These callers ought to know what their in for, they are obviously listeners. If you don’t like her, don’t listen and don’t call in. She had me laughing for 2 hours while I cleaned the bathrooms yesterday and that was worth it to me.

I used to be a fan of Dr Laura’s…and while the story you say could very well be true, I just stop listening to her after that. I personally think that after listening to her for a while, coupled with that story of her relationship with her mom, I just decided…I’m not buying anymore of her books, etc. All of us are sinners, not for me to judge her character or soul…I just don’t like her show anymore. I think it’s great if some of her advice has helped others…I can’t say she has never helped me. I also like that she shows the great respect for sahd’s as well as sahm’s…she doesn’t look down on men, if they choose to be the ones to stay home when the kids are growing up, and the wife works. I just choose to not listen anymore…

i was also in a bad marriage many years ago. however, like you said, if i wouldn’t have met my son’s dad, i wouldn’t have my son. so God has a plan for everything i think.
it seems like you have 4 boys who you are very proud of and you have tried to be a good mom for them.
you mentioned the word “preach” in your post. that is one of the things i disliked most about dr. laura was her preachiness. for those who listen to dr. laura and enjoy her, that is great, but there are those of us who turned her off long ago and don’t really miss her show.

you bring up a good point about a lack of domesticity in women today. in my opinion,
this began with the lies told by the women’s lib groups back in the 60’s and 70’s. we were told not be slaves to men and to get educated and have sex before marriage and with whomever and whenever you wanted. there definitely has been an increased level of immorality, because women are confused about how they fit into the world. many of us just want to be wives and mothers, but we are given conflicting messages. look at tv shows like Sex and the City - look at the music that young teens listen to - britney spears, christina aguillera, lady gaga. i believe that dr. laura herself went through a period of immorality and she has learned her lesson and perhaps she is bitter with herself about what she did.
i think it is great if she is trying to warn women not to make the same mistakes that she made, but there is a harshness about her that i didn’t care for.

I agree. I listened to her on and off for a while and thought her advice was pretty basic considering most of it I heard my entire life while growing up. But one bit of advice she gave I hated and decided if that was her “values” (this was before her pictures in Hustler and the revelation about her mom) I had no use for her. A woman called in saying that she knew her baby wasn’t her husband’s and she asked if she should tell him. “Dr” Laura blasted her asking her who would benefit from knowing? She said the best thing should could do for herself and her baby was keep it a secret. I haven’t listened to her since.

so she was telling her it was okay to deceive?! that is not good advice i don’t think.
i am sure some might argue, but i don’t think that is fair to the husband or baby.

I’m an avid listener of Dr. Laura, and I enjoy her program. I think there are some times where she’s a little aggressive with the callers, but they call in to her show knowing how she is so they cannot claim surprise. And, no, she is not Catholic so she doesn’t give her advice from a Catholic perspective. But I’ve heard her referencing the Catholic faith before and she’s always been extremely respectful of it – she’s even read the CCC which is more than I can say I’ve done.

She has made choices in the past that she regrets; and if you listen often enough, she does talk about them. If everyone who’s made poor choices is not be listened to, I think they would shut down this forum.

I’m not saying that anyone has to listen to her. This is a free country:D I just like the fact that she’s not afraid to be politically incorrect and spell it out the way she sees it. I think that’s something that’s fallen by the wayside way too much in our society.

Just my two cents.
