I disagree. I think the DRE has an unhealthy fear of scriptures and when subjecting the class to a prohibitor with regard to scripture its like teaching "something is wrong with scripture.I never said Scripture shouldn’t be used to pass on the faith. I said the DRE was wise not to have memorization.
Qutoing verbatum is saying memorized words. You can quote a story non-verbatum and still be quoting it.No, I’m not. “Quoting” is saying memorized words.
What?!? Oh My? And to what purpose where scripture written then? The scriptures say of themselves?I don’t think so
That is catachesis. What did the 3rd council of carthage say?2 Tim 3:15 - to make you wise for salvation; 2 Tim 3:16 - All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness
or the council of Trentbecause we have received from our fathers that those books must be read in the Church
what testimonies and authorities it will mainly use in confirming dogmas, and in restoring morals in the Church.”
That is simply untrue. Certainly, the first century christians relied on Apostolic Witness alone. Yet as the Apostles wrote down their letters and notes to the different churches the Church used those word to continue to instruct them when the Apostles were gone as well as the Traditions they left behind. And here is another item you misunderstand. One of the Purposes of Liturgy as taken from the Jews is for community memorization of Scripture. So your summation is faulty here. For most of church history scriptures were memorized by people. Do you know how the rosary came to be? Long before the Dominicans had a beatific vision monks would have knots tied to rope and they would count the knots reciting a psalm for each knot. Interesting for a people who didn’t memorize scripture. And people throughout church history have been encouraged to remember scripture. The Church used Scripture as part of that, themselves. WE, the faithful, never had any Scripture to use or memorize or the ability to read it for most of our history
not really because they don’t do it in the context of the church magisteriumThis is what Protestants do, isn’t it?
Then the DRE is being foolish. There is no issue between scripture and the magestium as long as scripture are taught in that context. What the DRE is doing is putting their catachumins in problems for the future by misapplying what the Catholic Church actually teaches. Because these catachumins will go forth explaining the Catholic Church discourages the study of scripture and as always that gets the Church into trouble and causes a false perception that the Catholic church is about burning bibles.Quote a whole lot of memorized passages of Scripture that they say mean a certain thing. Of course, they are wrong. And that becomes very dangerous and it breeds more and more people perfectly quoting misinterpreted Scripture. Which I believe is what this DRE wants to avoid.
As a matter of fact I do. I’ve memorized tons of scripture and when debating protestant I put up a good fight for the Church force the protestants to review passages in a Catholic Context. Unfortunately, most protestant I do this with are shocked that a Catholic can go head to head with them regarding scriptures. So their opinion of the Catholic faith garnered since the reformation has been confirmed in their minds ie “Catholics hate the bible and are afraid of scriptures” Molarky! Its DRE’s like this that cause the problem.Because you remember every single thing you memorized in school years later? Or you think kids will from Confirmation? Do you do this often in your own life? Quote Scripture passages at nonCatholics?
I hear people talk about God all the time and it doesn’t mean they actually have faith or even what they are talking about.I talk about Scripture all the time.
That’s fine for people who don’t know the bible but I personally would be ashamed if I didn’t know whether something was in the bible or not.I’ve almost never quoted it. When folks say, “The Bible doesn’t say that!” and then I look it up and we find it together and read what it says and it does say that, it seems pretty effective to me in transmitting the Faith.
Thats an oxymoron. It’s like saying I don’t preach against homosexuality I just believe and say its wrong. or are you one of those people who don’t draw the line. ie “I don’t criticize homosexuals and their agenda I support them to make them feel at home in the Church?” Thats how these things get corrupted. Next, you’ll be supporting gay clergy? What does the church teach? And stand by that!!!Then I’m not preaching at anyone. I’m sharing my Faith.
I haven’t I think. The Roman Empire didn’t fall in a day. However, little chunks of it got taken away and in the end it fell. That is what’s happening to the faith. We have “Catholic” Women being given “Holy Orders” on a cruize ship by a disobedient Bishop, We have the majority of members who don’t hold to the Church’s teaching of contraception and abortion, We have Bishops supporting homosexuality, We have priest spouting heresies! All of these things didn’t happen over night but one discipline at at time. And that is how the Church is being attacked every day in the trenches. Too many Catholics hide from the trenches in favor of societies relavatism.I believe you have conflated my complete support of not memorizing passages of Scripture with not studying Scripture and understanding Faith. You think we should; I think we shouldn’t. We differ. So be it.
