Hello from Italy! I enjoy to correspond with catholics around the world. My question, especially (but not only) to the feminine forum posters: Does modest clothing include high-heeled shoes ? Some of my friends wear long skirts for modesty instead of pants. But they walk around in high-heeled strappy sandals, even to church. I cannot find modesty in this habit of dressing. My opinion: Modest clothing includes low heels. You opinion?

Hello from Tennessee! The thing about shoes that gets me is when shoes are noisy. I haven’t really given thought to appearance because I just don’t pay that much attention, but it’s awfully distracting when someone walks late in to mass and their shoes are tap-tap-tapping on the tile floor. 😛

Hi Akanke,
thank you for your answer. The noise of heels in church is a new interesting criterion. High heels are worn to attract attention. Thats why hookers wear them ! My favourite way of dressing is wide pants and low heels. What kind of fashion do you prefer?

Not to hijack the thread, but as a male, I just want to say THANK YOU AND GOD BLESS YOU for making an effort to dress modestly! I know it’s hard in our modern culture but God will certainly bless you for it. Plus, women are so much more beautiful when they’re dressed how God would want them to be.

Thank you and God bless!

You do not hijack the thread! I like to hear those words from a man. I think, you are an exception. Here in Italy, most men prefer women in revealing clothes.

I knew quite a few quys in my college & early work years who were attracted to high heels and women’s feet. It was amazing to me as I never considered feet as an area to focus on except in the area of comfort.

Strappy, high heels with a mostly open foot will be a distraction to a definite number of men. It is not a non-issue.

Are they going to Mass or to a ADULTS only party? What vanity.

Surely you jest!! What about those of us who are simply short?!?! Would you really put us in the same category as “hookers” merely because we are sporting higher heels than you personally care to wear? With a church dress or business attire they are completely appropriate and come no where near to offending modesty. Sounds to me like your modesty efforts are getting the better of your common sense and charity. Please measure your words and judgments before you paint with such a broad brush.

Well, I am about to bring disapproval of many people to admit that I do wear blue jeans to mass. I wear blue jeans, a nice button up shirt, and brown…boots I guess. They resemble hiking boots minus the ankle support. I know many disapprove of this, which is okay, but I must be credited for dressing considerably more modest than the those who “dress up.”

I am 60+ and I wear all kinds of shoes high heels …low heels…flats…boots both w/ with high heels and low heels and I don’t in anyway consider that I’m acting like a hooker or trying to attract attention!!!
Give me a break!!! Why don’t you pick on those who wear revealing ,tight, short and low cut clothing instead???

I am a guy=love to wear my platform shoes to mass. It’s attractive, especially with bell bottoms. The view the person from behind has as one kneels.

You, a guy, wear platform shoes to mass and bell bottoms? Wow! What kind of church do you attend.:whacky: 😃 I especially like your self confidence in stateing that the view from behind is lovely. How do you know what your behind looks like when you kneel?:bounce: :whacky:

I commend the OP poster for being concerned with modesty. Her problem is not that she has made a personal choice to only wear flats but that she is, accidentally, judging others. Just worry about yourself, Cathy, and ignore what your friends do. It would have been nice if the bible had been more explicit in what constitued modesty but it leaves the decision up to each of us. I occasionally wear high heels but I keep my skirts long and loose. I am going to take a wild guess here but I think that the young women who wear short skirts and midriff baring tops are more a temptation to men then I am. I am nearly forty and have given birth to four kids.

I’ve never worn any heels higher than about 1.5 inches. I’m fairly tall, so I don’t need the extra height, and I’m a bit of a klutz. I’d twist my ankle in some of the “shoe” contraptions I see in church!!!

Plus, being the paranoid freak that I am, I like to wear stuff that I can run in if I have to. If you’re in a dark parking lot at 3 am for Eucharistic Adoration, and somebody jumps out at you from the bushes, you WANT to be able to run - and fast! Of course, you could just take off your shoe and beat him wiht the spike heel…

Modesty, though? I would say it depends on the reason you’re wearing them. If you’re wearing them to attract attention, it is immodest. The attention should all be on God, not on you. GOing to Mass is not supposed to be a dating forum. But if you’re in heels because you feel short and need an extra couple of inches, I would say it’s all right - as long as you are otherwise dressed decently. Wearing spikes, a strappy tanktop, and a 6-inch miniskirt, for instance, is unacceptable even if you’re short.

Plus, you still have the risk of wearing out your ankles…

i don’t see anything wrong with wearing heals, sorry.

There are high heels, and then there are high heels. And if you can’t tell the difference, then you need an education in style.

I don’t think the issue is half so much modesty as appropriatness. Dress high heels should be no problem; if they would fit with a women’s suit, they are fine. If they are more appropriate to a cocktail dress, then they may not be appropriate; not because of modesty, as there are modest coctail dresses; it has more to do with time and place.

And as to the issue of men with foot fettishes, the answer to that is to dress as the most restricted version of Islam would have; sorry, they need to get a life.

wow…I have never concerned what shoes I’m wearing with the matter of modesty! I don’t think it’s ever even crossed my mind!!! I usually don’t wear heels anyway…but wow, I’m really interested to see what some more people have to say

Could someone give the *common *reasons a person might wear really high heels, open toed or mostly open, a dainty strap around your ankle or snaking up your leg?

What are they ordered towards? Since with a 1 inch pump you are going to be perfectly well-dressed, feminine, and acceptable to your fellow females, why wear this other shoe, and why choose it for your attire at mass?

Ciao Cathy, come va?

If someone is concerned about the height of their shoes then they probably don’t have anything to worry about. My girlfriend wears high heels and can still dress modestly.
