Dressing modestly

my husband thinks heels usually make legs look extremely toned and um, “sexy,” which can thereby be immodest in certain situations.

speaking of ankle contortions while wearing heels 😉 i was wearing a new, backless pair last week at mass and for the first time in my entire life, managed to have my heel go flying off of the shoe. the ankle is extremely sore a week and a half later.

i’m not even going to my great-aunt’s funeral tomorrow because a) i can’t walk well and b) i don’t have any safe shoes to wear with a sprained ankle…! all my dress shoes are heels.

i think i will be keeping this in mind when i shop for fall clothes…and shoes.
 
Thank you PUG for your post. I absolutely agree with you. Women can buy a lot of feminine shoes, that are nor made to attract attention. My loafers with one inch heel nearly match every dressy pantsuit.
 
God Bless You for your concern over your shoes. This weekend while at Mass, I had the opportunity to see a young lady in a tube top and shorts. I was saddened by her attire as I could not understand why an attractive young lady would feel the need to wear this type of outfit to Mass? Was it her first time at Church? Was she someone ready to come to encounter Christ? I don’t know but she is in my prayers.

On another point, how can you ladies walk in those things called high heels. I have always thought that women who dress outrageously really don’t do themselves justice and don’t understand that the conservatively dressed young lady is normally more attractive.

Why use high heals for Mass?
 
look at the attached image: Feminine, low-heeled shoe, that matches a dressy pantsuit. Any need for higher heels?

i don’t recall saying they were high. 🙂 it was a heeled, summer sandal, the only pair i’ve been able to find that matches a particular skirt i bought earlier in the summer.

no, but that is possibly one of the uglier shoes i’ve ever seen! 🙂
 
as for pug’s question…

in fall or winter, i think women tend to wear heels that allow their pant leg to touch just above the bottom of the heel. it elongates the leg and is attractive, flattering and in style.

as for summer, i would say that this summer season and the one before are possibly the only in recent history where a “flat” shoe was even remotely in style and therefore available in shoe stores. yes, we can always find plain mary jane flats, but those are perhaps not as desirable for a younger woman and look a little dowdy in my opinion, unless for work or mass. furthermore, the ballet flat and the moccassin are really the only stylish alternatives for a truly flat summer shoe this summer. many sandals are are relatively moderate in their heel size (1 to 2 inches).

can anyone tell me what is immodest about open-toed shoes or sandals?? i have never understood that! 🙂
 
here another example. Although I prefer pants, these shoes with 1/2" heel look pretty with a long skirt.

I think that we need to get our definition of high heels straight here. I, personally, am only talking about moderately high heels. I am short, and I like a little bit of a heel. The right shoe can help bring an entire outfit together. As I have been happily married for 16 and a half years, I can assure you that I am not wearing them to attract males.

A woman can wear modest clothing and heels. Sheesh! No, a tube top and shorts are not appropriate but most women that wear heels to mass are not in a tube top. Most of us are in long, loose skirts. In fact most conservatively dressed women that I know wear heels. I think that the problem is that men only notice the heels on the women who are showing their legs, but if you take a good look at the women in your church who are wearing more modest fashion, you will see that the majority of them are wearing heels also! The heels just don’t look indecent with a long dress.

As far as how we walk…🙂 It is something that you learn as a teenager. I got my first pair of heels at thirteen and I was so proud. The only time that I have trouble now is walking in soft dirt.

I won’t wear backless shoes because of fear that this same thing will happen. Sorry about your accident.
 
ok, modesty is a yuestion of definition. I am a short person too. I occasionally wear shoes with 2" heel. Thats what I call moderately high. What is your definition ?

Could someone give the *common *reasons a person might wear really high heels, open toed or mostly open, a dainty strap around your ankle or snaking up your leg?

What are they ordered towards? Since with a 1 inch pump you are going to be perfectly well-dressed, feminine, and acceptable to your fellow females, why wear this other shoe, and why choose it for your attire at mass?

. . . because a lot of women actually do NOT know the difference and are utterly clueless. Clueless!

The sense of occasion (business, casual, cocktail, formal) is pretty much unexercised among young people – and it starts with moms who refuse to buy their altar-server sons a pair of $16 shoes from K-Mart but will pay $40 for sneakers . . .

The cluelessness is the fashion equivalent of tone-deafness. People who are tone deaf just CAN’T hear what the rest of us hear and they think we’re the one’s with the problem.

This is the “summer of the skirt,” anyway. Most of them are long, not short. (The tiered skirt, for instance, or some of the bohemian-chic designs.) The particular skirt I was referring to in my post happens to be a very modest length on me, and the shoes I was wearing matched perfectly. (I “never” buy backless either, but I was so happy to find exactly the sort of shoe I was looking for, for this particular skirt, that I bought them anyway, sans strap. Never again. ;)) I happen to be tall, so no, I do not want anything more than a two inch heel–and most of the time, I have difficulty in finding anything to buy otherwise that is both stylish and age appropriate, though I have plenty of one and one and a half inch shoes, too.

I consider anything beyond two to be “high.” I term 3 inch heels as “high heels.”

Besides, I do have a couple flats that I wear with skirts, depending on what looks best with what particular outfit and what the situation or circumstances surrounding where I am going, happen to be. (Did anyone read the story about the team from some state college that visited the President and the majority wore sequined flip flops?!!?!)

However, because I am tall and depending on where I am shopping, I buy “tall,” some of them are slightly longer than my actual leg, but the regular length is still too short. So, wearing a modest heel is more than appropriate. I never wear flats with nice denim or trousers. Again, a heel with the hem skimming the bottom is very attractive and elongates the leg. And perfectly modest!!!

Well, despite the comment someone made earlier about these shoes being ugly, I think they’re great! Before I had kids and worked in an office, I had both brown and black shoes similar to this. And they’re comfy with the more squared toe. I like 'em! 👍

I can hardly believe that this thread exists in the “moral theology” section of these forums. A quick read through makes it sound like a bunch of old biddies gossiping over the back fence. Honestly…footwear as a pressing moral issue???
 
I’m not sure if I forgot to hit “submit reply” or if my post was pruned, but my question remains, what is wrong with women wearing pants?
