I read this book in high school, and it screwed me up big-time for a while. Her bit about pants causing men to visualize your genitals made me feel like I was committing a sin every time I went to my fire department in jeans. Skirts with slits were also out.
It wasn’t about combining modesty with style. She was essentially saying, “if you don’t dress by my metrics, you’re committing a sin.” I was afraid to wear anything but long skirts for several months.
Her definition of modesty (as far as I’m concerned, though others may have different thoughts) is very narrow, and not at all practical. Her bit about the Masons trying to take down the Church by encouraging young people to wear shorter sleeves is really quite bizarre.
