Yeah, but it’s one benefit I’d rather not have had to collect on.
**Agreed! But I am glad to see that her Union has made accomodations to provide or negotiate this benefit for their teachers. **

Karin:
I guess the point is that as a group in charge of teaching the USA’s kids I would think that they would question what their Union is doing.

I’m sure they do. My wife got enough newsletters, etc. from the Union on what’s going on. And teachers discuss those things.
Is it all about them (teachers) what they want what they can get and perhaps not enough about the kids, what they need???
No group demands more from the School Boards for things of benefit to the kids than do teachers. Fact is, if we depended on parents to take any initiative, children would still be writing on slates.

So few parents come to conferences with their children’s teachers and few ask about their children’s progress in learning. The only time most teachers hear from parents is when they complain that Susie or Billy was in a fight, and what did the teacher do about it?

Do they just discuss among themselves or do they also question their union officals/leaders?

Really???..http://www.eagleforum.org/educate/2004/aug04/NEA-resolutions.html

Yes, perhaps part of the problem is parents glad to say I am not one of them…I am at all meetings etc. But yes more parents need to take an active role in their kids education!!!

Well, I guess that they’d start questioning the Union if they were dissatisfied. Most of the unions, I would think, try to keep their membership happy.

LOL!! Yes i would think so (keep them happy)…give them what they want and they wont question your wrong doings…I guess that is the motto of the Teachers Union 🙂

Keep in mind that the topic of this thread is the criminal activity of several union leaders in one particular union. That doesn’t make it universal any more than corruption in the Teamsters Union several decades ago meant that all Teamsters’ Locals were crooked or that all other unions were corrupt.

Criminals can operate in unions just as well as they operate in national corporations as we’ve seen lately.

Gain little or nothing? My wife’s union-negotiated health benefits cost her nothing, and her plan has already paid hundreds of thousands of dollars of cancer treatment for her since October last with our co-pays being only a few hundred dollars.
I see you are grateful for the insurance relieving some of your stress. Nothing wrong with that. But what does that have to do with teachers. A FordMotor employee gets the same benefits even if they retire after thirty years at age 50 and live to be one hundred. Everytime I buy something, I know some of the cost pays other people’s bills…fact of life. But we know that too often a union’s power is what keep the incompetent working… either teaching our kids, or building our cars. … or employing their limo drivers.

Tue enough, but a union’s power is also able to provide benefits and job security for those who are competent. Rain falls on all equally, the good and the bad.

Karin…teachers always claim the problem is parents are not involved. Yet their union is one of the most active forces in the country making it difficult for parents to get by. If a tax increase is proposed, the NEA is for it. If Republicans want to expand the child care tax credit, the NEA is against it. Every destruction social program of the last 40 years has been supported by the NEA. Believe you’ve seen the NEA resolutions. Good grief. They even want public education to begin at birth. Why bother being a parent if the NEA had its way. Might as well just hand the kids over to government employees to raise as you are going to spend all your time working to pay taxes to support the social services/educrat complex.

In addition, with the NEA having over $300 million a year in tax free income to slosh around, parents don’t stand a chance on the local level of having much imput into the system. What the NEA wants, the NEA usually gets. And then it asks for more.

like Hilary said… “It takes a village…” should have been “It takes an NEA village idiot to raise your child…”

:clapping: you hit it right on the head there…but be careful once again the NEA is strong and has many members…

I’m really sorry that you have such poor teachers in your area, but this can’t be blamed entirely on the unions.

My wife, a unionist, taught in the New York City School System, an NEA stronghold if ever there was one, and the teachers she taught with were good and conscientious men and women who worked hard for their pupils. This was an elementary school in Brooklyn, however, so I can’t comment on middle or high school. My wife herself won awards for her teaching, something I’m very proud of.

I don’t doubt that there were “idiots” teaching at some schools, but I also know that there were brilliant people teaching in the System as well.

Don’t broadbrush any group. You’ll always be wrong.

Richardols-
Yes there are some great teachers in the system, not many, and most of the GREAT teachers are gone out of the system due to retirement…so what does that leave us with?

Karin:

Agreed, that there are not many GREAT teachers, but there are lots of good teachers and even a good number of so-so mediocrities. But, as long as bad teachers don’t become the norm, we’ll be fine.

In 2003, 423 New York City school teachers were arrested for crimes ranging from drug dealing to assault to rape.
