Gatwick’s runway has been shut since Wednesday night, when two devices were seen flying over the perimeter fence.

The airport said 110,000 passengers on 760 flights were due to fly on Thursday.

Police were still hunting for the drone operator after another device was reported just before 07:00 GMT.

Those due to travel have been told to check the status of their flight, while Easyjet told its passengers not to go to Gatwick if their flights have been cancelled.

Sussex Police said it was not terror-related but a “deliberate act” of disruption.

They should. This is a very serious violation. I hope the police can track them down quickly.

Mr Woodroofe said: "Additional mitigating measures provided by government agencies and military have given me the confidence to reopen the airport.

"We are now operating at almost normal runway conditions but the challenge for the airlines, as the result of this disruption, is that their planes are not all in the right place.

“So what we’ll be doing today is recovering their operations so by tomorrow we are back to standard operation and continue to recover the situation for our passengers.”

If I was losing hundreds of thousands of pounds due to a pesky drone I’d be reaching for a shotgun pdq!
God bless.

I’d be a proponent of generating EMF interference myself… Though what the drone does after communication is cut off will vary by drone.

Apparently they have some new measures in place for if this happens again. I didn’t see any details on what they were. I wonder if they put something in place that would help identify the location of those operating the drone. I’m also wondering how they managed to keep the drones causing interference for two days without a landing for a batter swap or fuel resupply giving away a position.

I’d forgotten but on tv last night they showed a young British company who have invented a gun which captures a drone. It looked like a kind of bazooka thing and fired a shell which then opens a net which captures the drone. It has a small parachute on the net so the drone falls at a safe speed earthwards.

They showed it with a viewfinder which has a green light when the gun is locked on to the drone. Looked great. Available only to the military or police I think they said.

I remember this from a few years ago.

This is from 2016. It wasn’t available for general purchase since it violates FCC Regulation 15 part B about generating interference that will effect other devices.

That looks good!

The British one doesn’t use radio frequencies in that way, though I suppose it must lock on to something. Interesting, thanks.
