Are you kidding??? It’s a piece of unleaven bread. Is the ground supposed to split open and swallow up all the people in the church? The fact that nothing has ever happened due to this mishap should tell you something.

Our priest gave a little talk about communion a few months back. And how to accept it. Hands ok, and if you are going to take it on your tongue, get it OUT THERE! He said he quit reaching into a persons mouth when a person bit down before his fingers were out. WORSE, he naturally pulled his fingers back, bringing the persons dentures with him. He had SEVERAL stories.
Oh my gosh!!

To the OP: Please go back. It wasn’t intentional. No foul on your part. 👍

I dropped the Holy Eucharist once; but it was picked up by the lady giving me communion and I asked her to give it to me again instead of a new one. So I took it even if it had fallen. I didn’t mind at all, I felt that it was the least I could do to try to make up for my mistake. I didn’t want to refuse Jesus’ body.

I was quite ashamed of myself once when I had the privilege of distribution and dropped one. The priest was compassionate and maintained his reverence the entire time.

I never dropped one receiving it, but missed a couple when I was an altar boy in the '70s when we’d use patens. There were a few dropped every year by the congregation, so I don’t think it’s not all that uncommon.

As much as I’d like to take communion on the tongue, I do in the hand just because my tongue is real short and I don’t want to drop a host or make it more difficult for the priest.

It is an accident. Desecration is an intentional act and thusly deserve excommunication. But an accident? No, if excommunication were the punishment for all ‘mistakes’ then there would be no one in the Church.

So far I have never dropped a Host.

But…

I have seen many dropped. All in one day!!! Our priest was distributing the hosts into different Ciborium(s). He somehow, without knowing it, got a number of hosts caught in his alb. So, he goes out to distribute and as his arm moves down, he drops one or two. Then it happens again. And again.:eek::eek:

Now if you watch him, he holds his sleeves up and out of the way. 👍

Last Sunday I somehow dropped communion on the tongue while kneeling, fortunately it was caught by the alter server. The Priest was visibly upset and I was embarassed, and to be honest I feel like I have to find another parish because I feel so ashamed to walk in there again. Has this ever happened?
I am very sorry that happened to you. I was attempting to give someone communion on the tongue (their hands were at their sides) and at the last minute they moved their cupped right hand up forcefully under mine and knocked the host free. I suspect I looked upset too but I immediately took a half step, bent down, retrieved the dropped host and consumed it. (I do not and I repeat do not “give it to the priest” to consume and to suggest this breaks the rule of taking rather than receiving communion is absurd.)

I then gave the communicant a another host in their hands. One thing that shocks me is when a host it dropped (very uncommon here as it’s most CIH) I very rarely see a communicant bend down to retrieve the host. Usually they raise their hands as if they want another host before the distributor has a chance to pick the dropped host up. That chills me. They have every right to a “fresh” host but to show so little care for a dropped host is sad.
