CLEVELAND — Three Cleveland-area Catholic high schools announced Tuesday they will begin drug testing all students in grades 9-12 beginning in the fall.

Gilmour Academy in Gates Mills, St. Edward High School in Lakewood and Saint Ignatius High School in Cleveland said the schools are focused on preventing substance abuse and protecting students’ health and well-being.

All students will be initially tested using a non-invasive hair sampling procedure. Periodic, random tests will occur throughout the school year.

My local school district has already started this, beginning with the student athletes. Also some teachers and the principal have agreed to be tested. This type of hair testing is very accurate and also very expensive–about $40, which is why it is gradually being introduced. So far they have invested about $30,000 into it.

It is a real shame that we have to do this to keep our kids and schools safe.

The problem with hair testing is that it can go back years. So if a kid tried drugs just a few times at 15, and quit and wanted to be on a sports team at 17 but then failed the test, it would not be fair to kick him out.
