I suppose if one has never left the Catholic Church, much less be a Baptist minister as I was for fourteen years, AND if one has been brought up with the idea that the Mass has to be ‘revelant’ and ‘entertaining’ to those we are ‘evangelizing’, then I can see how you would think it is no big deal.
I guess it’s like describing a different era in history, you had to be there. I was a Protestant for twenty years. I spent two decades listening and tapping my toe to ‘tear-jerking’, emotion-enducing music. Same reason: “it brings in the young people”.
Sure it does, and as soon as the church down the street gets a better band, they run over there. It is not worship. It is testifying to each other!!
The Catholic Mass is completely OTHER than that. It is simply not the same, nor should it even attempt to be.
Why would I desire what I left behind?
My two cents.

Well, didn’t the Romans play drums while they sent the Christians to slaughter? I remember my Music Art professor and our text book actually say the organ was not played for several hundred years because of the fear it instilled in Christians because they all knew what it represented. Some time later the organ was introduced. And low and behold what was that German town where the guitar was played for the first time… Classical style of course… Silent Night.

Drums? Well who knows what’s next. The gazu? Next thing you know someone will sing rap. What’s the world coming to? Oh that’s right, it coming to an end.

Anyway, I prefer hearing no instruments at all during worship. I prefer acapella. 😃 Chant more precisely.

I can see the Mass Times in the Porch now… "0830 Tridentine Mass 1030 The Family Mass 1700 The Youth Rap Mass

The rap mass……to like appeal to the youth and draw them back to the Church…I wouldn’t be surprised!..“They’re not monks they’re hoodies”

No…no no please, enough!. Give Youth Silence and treat them like grown ups. Get rid of the dance, drums, clowns, ribbons, cheesy 70’s style posters, and please… just a little silence in our distracted lives:).

Modern Church Music …It brings in a few young people and drives away anyone with faith and musical taste!

I don;t mind emotional music at Mass…I mean Pangue Lingua Gloriosi…brings tears of joy to me…’“The clapping Gloria?” tears of embarassment

It would be funny if in our enlightened, progressive, liberal, tolerant, educated, scientific 21st Century we were actually heading back to paganism.
The enlightened, progressive, liberal, tolerant, educated, scientific 21st Century… The devil loves it

Well the issue has to begin sometime. So a thousand yrs from now perhaps traditional Catholics on CAF will look back and say the drum issue was a thousand yrs ago. Comparing the use of drums to “fill in the blank” in use at Mass in 3010 is not the same thing. Why on earth were those 2010 CAF traditional Catholics so worked up over something like drums.
If the world makes it to 3010 ( or even 2110) I would be veeeeeeeeeeeery suprised

:rotfl:

No I wouldn’t be surprised. I’ve seen things come close to it. In fact, I’ve seen it in other faiths, :dancing:I think disco might come back now.

But I’d rather hear drums over something like rap.

What about the flute or violin? None of them will ever top Chant for me.

We visited a parish in Florida 2 years ago and I was nauseous. I now know where all the hippies went. Listening to Protestant songs in mass is better than drums or rap. But I’d take drums or rap any day over a clown mass. Dance is an African thing and we do have a significant African heritage that has settled in America. I don’t like it, but if the Rome blesses it I have no say so and realize that the Church has absorbed many cultures in the world allowing them to use some of their own traditions that are “compatible” with liturgy if done properly. The problem is that when you give some people and inch they seem to always take a mile.

At least my parish priests say mass with much respect. I miss our Franciscan that loved to say the mass in Latin though. But our other Franciscan Friars are great. I hope to attend some of the different Eastern Orthodox Divine Liturgies in the future as well as a Byzantine Catholic Divine Liturgy. I’m fascinated with the cultures, will probably have my chest poked in from stories I’ve heard, but hey I can take it.

My sentiments exactly about giving traditionalists too many inches in retuning to Latin. 😛
Latin is awesome. I’m sorry you do not agree. I want to attend a Greek Orthodox parish to hear the ancient worship in Greek.

Pipe organs are SO protestant.

If we want traditional, I suggest PSALM 150.
Psalm 150

1 Praise the LORD. [a]
Praise God in his sanctuary;
praise him in his mighty heavens.

2 Praise him for his acts of power;
praise him for his surpassing greatness.

3 Praise him with the sounding of the trumpet,
praise him with the harp and lyre,

4 praise him with tambourine
and dancing,
praise him with the strings and flute,****

5 praise him with the clash of cymbals,**
praise him with resounding cymbals.**

6 Let everything that has breath praise the LORD.
Praise the LORD.

Verse 5 and the “Clash of Cymbals” sounds kind of like drums to me…

If it’s good enough for God, it’s good enough for me.
Wait! It’s not all about me!
Sadly, this Psalm is too often taken out of context in regards to liturgical music. It has everything to do with stating that all creation should praise the Lord. It has NOTHING to do with saying that the trumpet, harp, lyre, strings, flute and cymbols should be used in liturgical music. In addition, it is NOT condoning liturgical dance.

This Psalm is recited quite frequently in the LOTH. I love it.

This is an interesting topic to me. There are so many different cultures. I never realized just how different they are until after I traveled in the military around the world. On CAF, I’ve seen Latin rite Catholics treat Eastern Catholics like their theology and liturgy are inferior. Should we treat African Catholics as inferior as well because they utilize “dance” to express their love for God in their ritualized dance? Native American Catholics also have rituals unique to their liturgy as well. This is really up to the experts in the Vatican from my perspective. I’m not qualified.

Some masses are over within 15-20 mins…I reckon with the Rap mass we may be able to bring that down 😃

That is your interpretation.

Please offer church teaching then, on what is acceptable and what is not. I will follow it. I find it interesting, that, most people don’t know that an organ has trumpet, strings, flute, settings to be played in Mass…

Does that have anything to do with the rapture?😊
The Rapture Mass…I am looking forward to that. To see who floats upwards and who remains in their pews…I hope I’m floating upwards sniggering at those left behind 😉

I attended Mass with my son on Sunday. We had a glorious time praising the resurreted savior. Father played this: youtube.com/watch?v=9p4G2GbPYQA

There was not a dry eye in the house. I KNOW my REDEEMER Lives!

and… how could this bring dishonor to our Lord and Savior?

I appreciate the evidence of “Praise Worship”, something I loved and even miss. However, for true worship this is not the type of music that honors God in His splendor. This is a feel good song that has its place, just not in the Mass or Divine Liturgy. The Protestant faith we came out of is the Church of Christ [claim to be the one true church founded by Christ and that all others are apostate, including those claiming to be non-denomination]. However our last 6 months was searching for truth and God in a non-denominational bible church that accepted apostate beliefs like rapture and that baptism was not necessary for salvation, thus calling whoever inspired the bible a liar. I miss the music, but not the lack of the real presence of Christ in the Eucharist and a better realization about what’s actually happening in the mass. If protestants knew what we really believe and are taught they’d think we are all out of our minds.
