Just when I am ready to be baptized after so many tears, covid19 happened. Now my baptism will have to wait.

That seems sad. I think that your parish and/or diocese will find a way to manage that.

Take comfort in the fact that we believe in the baptism of desire.

This is very frustrating but the wait will not be forever. While you wait for the pandemic to be over you could offer up your suffering for people that are sick with COVID-19 or died for it, or for all healthcare workers dealing with the patients.
Also remember that in case of life danger you cold be baptized even by somebody that is not a priest if a priest is not available.

Did the priest say it would have to wait? I know that in most Dioceses, the sacraments continue being conferred, just with numbers restrictions and social distancing in place. There’s no reason a baptism would have to wait if it was done in accord with those restrictions.

In our diocese it is all postponed. Those coming into the Church generally during the Easter Vigil, First Communions, Confirmation, and Baptism in general. All of it is postponed until further notice.

When this pandemic subsides some serious questions will need to be asked and we should not shy away or be intimidated from asking them. There is still an air of, “How dare you” among many Catholics when it comes to questioning church governance and our bishops; despite our recent history. These forums are not the proper forum however, and for now, patience is a virtue.

Fr, why should a baptism be postponed?

To add, I don’t mean to be insolent or ungrateful. I don’t presume to know the answers or not to appreciate the difficult decisions made, but my guess is the presbyterium is also frustrated and not entirely because of the natural causes of our present situation. I have friends who are priests as well who have said they are very glad not to be bishops right now. In any case, if there is another pandemic, I hope baptisms will not be postponed. Also I feel blessed and think that my own Archbishop is exemplary (I admit bias). Baptisms are not postponed in my archdiocese. Private confession is also still available.

Sorry to learn. I am curious when this is all going to be over and we can back to church.

I’m guessing that the OP was supposed to get baptized during Easter Vigil, as most of those who enter the Church are. They will probably be getting confirmed as well. Since public Easter Vigil is cancelled, I’d imagine that the ceremony is postponed as well.

I figured that. Still, does the baptism need to wait? It could be a private ceremony, and they could postpone a public confirmation even until next year if they wanted to enter full communion at the Easter Vigil. Baptism has urgency though, especially when there is an increased risk of serious illness.

The Church teaches baptism of desire, so this is a non-issue.

OP, I’m so sorry your baptism got delayed. Please accept my sympathies and wishes for a speedy resolution to this crisis so that you can finally come into full communion with the Church.

I’m sorry. I was supposed to receive first communion/confirmation at Easter Vigil and I understand your disappointment. But true love waits. We will get through this. Peace.

It’s not exactly the same, just as confession is not the same as making an act of contrition, or spiritual communion with actual communion, and it’s cavalier to dismiss it as a “non-issue.”

God bless you. Take comfort in the fact that many many people are experiencing the same thing. It’s the same in our diocese. I’ll pray for you all and I agree with a previous poster, offer up your suffering for those with the virus and their families who often can’t visit or comfort the dying.
Hopefully you’ll be able to be baptised soon. God bless you.

My question would be why does a priest need to put his life at risk for a baptism that can be delayed, one that is not urgent. Even a small private baptism means a gathering of 3-4 people in very close contact.

For those who had planned to enter the Church at the Easter Vigil, all their sacraments are postponed until a later date. I have a whole group of teens who have been prepping for their Confirmation that has been postponed until ??? Should our bishop just come and confirm them in a “private” Mass because it’s important? How about all the 7-8 year olds who have been working toward First Communion? Them too?

This pandemic has put everything on hold. This is something we have never seen before and, God willing, will never see again. What should be done isn’t going to follow along with can be done.

Not all dioceses are postponing baptisms; in my archdiocese they are continuing privately in small groups. What risks we can reasonably expect for the sacraments is an important question. Why is it not an essential service?

There are ways to lessen the risk. Sacraments can be celebrated outdoors, with a minimal number of people, with reasonable distances and participants wearing face masks.
