A Dutch Roman Catholic bishop has called for the Catholic tradition of eating fish on Friday to be restored, as a contribution to the fight against climate change.

Speaking on a Catholic current affairs programme on public service TV, Bishop Gerard de Korte said a meat-free day a week would make a huge contribution to cutting CO2 emissions.

The Bishop of Groningen made his suggestion on Sunday, as more than nine hundred churches in the Netherlands rang their bells to urge world leaders to reach an effective treaty at the climate summit in Copenhagen. “We know that every kilogram of meat takes a vast amount energy to produce and causes a great deal of CO2 emissions,” he said. The bishop’s idea gives a religious twist to singer Paul McCartney’s campaign for a meat-free Monday.

It is my understanding that a meatless Friday is still the norm, but that an act of penance or piety may be substituted for it. Anyway, I have observed Friday abstinence for the past several years unless abstinence could be perceived as rude, e.g., being invited to dinner at a friend’s home on a Friday with meat being served.

We decided after lent last Spring ,that we were not going to resume eating meat on Fri…It isn’t hard to do

Me, too. I offer it up to end abortion.Several years ago our bishops recommended that, if I remember correctly.
I won’t be offering it up for climate change, though…😉

Wow, ok, so I was obstaining from meat on friday just trying to live my faith. It is hard as my family loves meat and it is usualy cheaper to make. I would give anything up for the lord I did not know I was suppose to name a reason I just did it because I thought it was what he wanted.

( ok, so maby I am not that bright) Now I am suppose to give it up for climate change something that could be or not be real? are you kidding me? smoking dope, maby? drinking to much wine?

Lord have mercy on my simple mind! I thought mondays, wednesdays, and fridays were suppose to be fast days for the lord not climate change! I wont do anything for something that is still a maby, I will do something for something I know to be fact and that is my lord!

It should be noted that where this Bishop comes from, is the same country that started Communion in the hand illegally and where Euthanasia is legal.
