I agree, which is why I figured surely some other Christian people, especially Catholics, had issues with this but I couldn’t find anything online other than the occasional post on the Oprah message board by a Christian that was quickly dismissed by all the others. I was starting to doubt if I was really thinking about this clearly or if I should just keep my mouth shut. So yesterday was productive for me - it seemed like all of a sudden all the info was there in front of me, why I couldnt’ find it last week.

I pray for my friends - they are lost - they search and search and search and try every new “religion” that comes down the pike and yet they never are satisfied and I wonder why they can’t see that for themselves. Sorry, gone off topic. I worry about my friends.

Hi, fnz2thrght welcome to CAF!. I’m pretty new, too, posted very sporadically until recently. You mentioned you weren’t great with words or well versed… I completely disagree! Your post was great, & your intuition on this (which I think was a gift from God) was even better. I’ll pray for your friends, too. I was on those Oprah boards a little bit, & I got so discouraged I gave up trying to convince anyone of the occult nature of the secret. So far I think there are about 2 main threads on this topic. There are a lot of good links & information that people provided. Maybe some of it will be helpful with your friends, but, sadly, it might not.

I was really struck by Sunday’s readings, too. Our priest’s homily was so appropriate to this subject (but he didn’t mention the secret) that I wasn’t sure if he was trying to send a message or if it was just a coincidence. I wish The Church would speak out on this, though, because a lot of people are being taken in. Thankfully, some of the secular press (Newsweek) is really slamming it. Anyway, take care!

I just watched an episode of Oprah’s “after the show”. I have no idea why I even bother with it. I used to watch Oprah all the time and then quit for a while and I noticed over the past 10 years she’s gone hog wild New Age.

I noticed that a long time ago, too, yet she tries to come across as a Christian. Maybe because she realizes that her audience is probably primarily Christian.

Two things of concern for me: so many women take Oprah’s words or wisdom as if it is the answer they have been looking for. Like she is a god or something. That bugs me.

I couldn’t agree more. The way people bow down to her irritates me as well. If Oprah reads a book and mentions it, the bookstores sell out of the book. If Oprah sees a movie and talks about it, the movie becomes A Big Deal.

sadly, you’re right. I don’t really think most of them care. They think I’m pretty out there, even though I’m far from what anyone here would call conservative.

I so agree! I thought for sure I would have heard more but nope. I was hoping our local diocesan paper would have had something, but they pull most of their articles from CNS and I haven’t yet seen anything there yet, except ironically google ads on their search pages FOR the secret lol.

The Secret is just a fancy, ridiculous way of saying that if you work hard and have a positive attitude, you will get things in return. Not that complicated. All this energy stuff is just a scam. I watch Oprah and Ellen every day and they both have devoted more than one show to it and I turned it off both times. It seemed they were being sucked into philosophical and spirital nonsense IMO.

Maybe I understand things different. In my book sham and occult are two very different things. A sham to me is a commercial that makes it look like it promises a sexy body and hair if you drink milk…nothing occult here…pretty overt to me.

But the occult is something sinister and basically evil. Occult only means hidden but that is exactly how evil works on the whole…but these days it is going from covert to overt.

I had been saying the Prayer to St Michael - whenever I feel “at war” as it were…I hope that I’ll find courage, and the prayer to St. Ignatius is one of my favorites.

I think the Church should bring back saying the prayer of St. Michael after every Mass. I say it in silence after every Mass as I continue to pray to Jesus after receiving Communion and the ending of the Mass. EWTN’s Daily Mass says it after every single Mass and my daughter and I join right along.

CNN did a special on The Secret last night - I was so surprised, and while it was balanced, CNN definitely was pushing how ridiculous this whole thing is.

I usually watch CNN but I didn’t watch that night. I wish I could’ve seen it. Perhaps they have something online? I hope so.

If you read the Newsweek article (and hopefully gave it a good rating …no one else has) you really got the full extent of the CNN piece. It was just a retelling of the same thing…same guests who commented in NewsWeek were talked to on CNN.

I’m not a big Oprah fan believe me, but after reading all the posts here has anybody actually read “The Secret”? It seems all I’m reading is hearsay evidence that this book is bad and should be avoided.

I’d much rather read the opinion of somebody that has actually read it.

When all else fails, get the facts and think for yourself. (The sentiment can apply to books or Oprah!)

I am brand new here and I was amazed of the opinions of the Secret. I have not read the book, but I have watched the video a few times, my original copy came from Australia. I have handed this out to people to watch to make positive changes in there lives. This concept is based on the law of attraction that is biblical (Mark 4:25). The author sent a note with my original purchase with 10 steps of how he implemented the law of attraction. The 10th was one he came by on accident and that is the involvment of God and Jesus in his life. The work of satan is here in this forum. We should love and pray for our neigbors even if we don’t agree with their views.

When the power of anything is within oneself or the universe, and not in Jesus Christ, I would have to question such nonsense! All good things come from God! But channelling (?) spirits for knowledge that only belongs to God has no other source than from the devil…even the devils warns one of doing this…it is an abomination! And the word of God does not lie!

Maybe you should read the links before assuming we are doing Satans work. From what Jesus said in one passage…Satan does not attack its own…so for you to say we are doing the devils work because we are calling The Secret new agey and the work of the devil is truly an oxymoron!

Thanks for the latest link, Shoshana. That was a really good article. I was unaware that Jerry Hicks was formerly a circus acrobat & Amway Distributor…Not that there’s anything wrong with that! Another poster had written about the Hicks’ as well, but this link really provides wierd insight into Byrne & the Hicks. Byrne doesn’t sound at all well. The Hicks say they have traveled with Abraham for years now, which is so scary. I clicked on a link which I can’t find again now, that mentioned there was subliminal info put into The DVD of the secret.

Sounds like Ms. Byrne & the Hicks & Jack Canfield must be allowing a lot of negative energy into their lives if they can’t resolve their differences. Maybe the secret is not working for them…

Fair enough. The material is naturally seculure, but by reading the authors comments when mailed and watching it several times, I would not call this the work of the devil. I believe Jesus is the Universe and He founded the “Law of Attraction”.

Hi, dmiller125. Lots of us here have been talking about this for days, & some people picking this up in the middle of the discussion might not understand all of the problems we are talking about. I f you look back at past posts, most of us mention praying for various people quite frequently. That said, people are quite concerned that Oprah & the promoters of the secret are leading people into New Age, occult practices.
The secret is actually contrary to Judeo-Christian faiths & leads people astray, that is why people have said Oprah is doing the work of the devil. We have already mentioned on this thread that most of us unknowingly do things every week that are in Satan’s favor & help him out. The secret involves channeling, sorcery & giving glory & attention to “the universe”, not God. A woman on Oprah’s message board made a whistle appear in her bathroom, which did not come from God. You really might want to check out some of the links in this thread to get more info about the secret…
