The book The Secret is not only new age thinking but old age occult…going right back to the garden. “And you too shall be as Gods…” It is demonic thinking. It is seeking your own will instead of seeking God’s will.

Back in the '30’s Napoleon Hill, of Think and Grow Rich fame was taught these occultic techniques like visualization by his ‘spirit guides’, the Council of Nine.

Later came Norman Peale’s, The Power of Positive Thinking. Not that there is anything wrong with trying to look on the positive side of things…but this was more along the lines of Hill’s teachings.

The Health and Wealth Gospel, Name it and Claim it, of certain TV evangelists is very similar. Also is the misuse of ‘tithing’…to get what you want. The claim of course is that you are following old “spiritual laws”…the problem of course is which spirit?

This type of thinking is being promoted all over the various media, not just on the Oprah show. She may have no idea of what her show is really being used to promote in this case.

It is wise to be discerning and expose these kinds of things for what they truly are lest others be deceived.

My opinion remains the same. I do not think Oprah is doing the devil’s work.

I personally do not subscribe to this style of spirituality, but if some people are helped by it… I do not see a problem with it.

People have problems with Catholicism, and it’s teaching. That doesn’t sway me either.

That’s possible. . ., indeed maybe even probable, in that I think Oprah is honestly convinced that she helps others and indeed has helped people. Those are exactly the sort of people that Satan works hardest to ‘win’. . . ones who want to do good, are praised for their good, and vulnerable to evil influences that look as though they are good. Pray for her and indeed for all people to realize that only God is the source of good and that nothing, that ‘no thing’, is good without God.

What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet loses his soul?
You are absolutely correct. So many people look up to Oprah as someone who does so much good, but when you look deep down the story is different. Let’s look at how Oprah leads her life. She has been living with a man for about 20 years and they are still not married. She will probably never marry so she can keep her money. She may give away millions of dollars but this is only a minute percentage of her overall worth. Most of us middle-class folks give away a larger percentange of our income and net worth. She also will do shows touting homosexuality and adultery. Please excuse my rant but I just get aggravated when I see how so many people look up to her.

Just my opinion, but no one is actually helped by veering away from God. This is what “The Secret” is trying to do, selling the secret to happiness based on knowledge not easy to access or has been “hidden” from the masses for whatever reason.

We KNOW God IS the SOURCE of happiness because He IS JOY. 😃 He isn’t a joyful being, He doesn’t give us a supply from His limitless reserve, He actually is the EMBODIMENT of happiness. And one needent look towards ANYTHING other than Jesus to find it.

Telling people they don’t have to go to the source isn’t any different than telling people their “future” or relying on tarot cards, or reasing your horoscope, it is the same age-old lie that seeks to make people rely on anything other than God’s providence. It is so much easier to influence people when you’ve turned them away from the LIGHT. :twocents:

Yes, I’ve noticed other posts with this link after I’ve posted it myself in this post;

NEW SPIRITUAL METHOD CALLED ‘THE SECRET’
PROMOTED ON TV HAS A HIDDEN OCCULT LINK

Like Father Corapi says;

“Satan will throw in 99 truths to get in 1 lie.”

I truly believe this is true. And that is why Satan fools so many people.

I’ve read it.

No one here, at least not I, have said that she is doing Satan’s work directly and deliberately. We all participate in Satan’s work indirectly without wanting to do it. We do it by sinning.

I’m not saying that Oprah is sinning by presenting this. She has no idea that this is not all good like she thinks it is.

Satan appears to be good to people otherwise people wouldn’t be sinners. Sin doesn’t hurt at first. That is how sin works. Some sin is slow poison some sin is fast poison.

So if this “secret” works for people now, something will happen later that is not so good. People might not see it right away as the “after effects” of the “secret” but I do believe that it will happen sooner or later. I do not call that getting “help” from this.

I totally agree with you. It aggravates me also how people look up to her.

I was listening to the Drew Mariani show and someone called in about seeing a couple of frontal nude pictures in the “O” Magazine. This person that called in said that he was surprised because he respected Oprah. I was shocked! I guess this Catholic man that called in has no idea. But then later on another man called in and said that he does not respect Oprah and that no Catholic radio station should be promoting her. And he also mentioned her life style.

THank you for this link. I found that article much more informative than the first one.

Do you believe “The Secret” is truth, and of God?

If a person believes that “The Secret” is a lie and is deceitful, and if it violates anything the Church holds to be true, than who’s work could it be other than Satan’s?

My thoughts on “The Secret” is that it is a lie, it is deceitful, and I’m sure with some research I could find that it violates what the Church holds to be true. Therefore my opinion is that whether Oprah is intentionally or unintentionally doing so, she is doing the work of Satan. Of course, when any of us commit a sin, we are also doing the work of Satan. She needs prayer and spiritual direction, just as many of us do.

Sorry for the long post but I think this is important. I’ve seen the movie and listened to most of the book on tape. I was a little leary when they kept mentioning that “The church had banned the secret.” So… I decided to investigate.

On “The Secret” website, Rhonda Byrne, the author, lists 2 books that inspired her project. Wallace D. Wattle’s book, “The Science of Getting Rich” is the “tattered manuscript” that she was given that changed her life. In it she discovered “the secret.” According to wallacewattles.wwwhubs.com, Wattle also gave a speech around the turn of the 20th century that was entitled “Jesus: The Man and His Work.” Apparently, in this speech he claims that much of what Christianity has told us about Jesus is wrong. Here are some quotes from his talk:

“Jesus said of himself, ‘If I be lifted up I will draw all men unto me.’ Well, he has not drawn all men, not even a majority of men, and I am inclined to think that he has never been lifted up. An unreal, imaginary character is being lifted up instead, and men are not being drawn by it.”

This is a conflict with their “law of attraction”.

“… I want to prove to you this afternoon that the church, everywhere, is holding up a false Christ; I want to show him to you as he was and is, the Supreme Man - the Highest Type, the incarnation and revelation of that one great life which is above all and through all and in us all, lifting us all toward unity with one another and with him.”

“The Spirit of Christ is not dead, but it no more resides in the modern church than it did in the church of His day.”

“It is doubtful if any man was ever more misunderstood by the people of his own time than Jesus of Nazareth. Certainly no man was ever more grossly misrepresented by succeeding generations, and especially by those who professed to be his friends and followers.”

This talk can be downloaded in whole for a fee. Another little tidbit; Wallace was kicked out of the Methodist Church because of his views about Jesus.

The second book that she mentions is Charles F. Haanel’s “The Master Key System.” They claim that this book was banned by the Catholic Church in 1933 however it does not appear on the official list. It may have been locally censored, however, but that is quite different from an official ban. Sadly, its a lucrative advertising ploy, regardless. The following is from charleshaanel.wwwhubs.com/

“Charles F. Haanel
(1866-1949)
Author of The Master Key System

Charles F. Haanel was a noted American author and businessman who belonged to the American Scientific League, The Author’s League of America, The American Society of Psychical Research, the St. Louis Humane Society and the St. Louis Chamber of Commerce.

Besides the “Master Key System,” which he wrote in 1912, he also wrote “Mental Chemistry” and “The New Psychology”

By 1933 The Master Key System had sold over 200,000 copies and then seemingly disappeared. The Master Key System is one of the finest studies in self-improvement, mind-stuff, and higher consciousness ever written. Covering everything from how to get wealthy to how to get healthy, Mr. Haanel leaves no stone unturned. With precision, he elucidates on each topic with logic and rigor that not only leaves you feeling good, but also thinking good. The book was banned by the Church in 1933 and has been hidden away for seventy years!”

I also discovered that Haanel was very involved in Free Masonry.

These are the only two books that Rhonda Byrne mentions on her ebook link and I think that this is also significant in showing the tremendous importance that these books have for her project, The Secret.

Sometimes going right to the source is the best way to get your answers. Hope this helps.

Phyll

Phyll, thanks for the VERY informative details about Wattles & Haanel. The quotes are so telling. I can be so gullible sometimes, but the ridiculousness of this is so obvious- to say nothing of the heresy.

If Jesus was such a supreme guy, the highest type, according to Wattles’ law of attraction, he still wouldn’t have attracted all the hate that He did & been crucified if Wattles’ law works. I think he tried to explain away the bad things that happened to Jesus by saying He wasn’t God, but his premise still doesn’t work if he’s such a supreme, swell guy. Thanks for the info…

Phyll, thank you for your contribution to this thread. The Secret if anything has caused me to look closer at my faith, which most controversial things do. Funny you mention it, specifically, in your post, “Remember the power of prayer and the peace of obedience. These will bring you the beatitude of happiness.” This thread and the Secret have drawn me to rediscovering exactly those things: power of prayer and faith and the Beatitudes of happiness.
Isn’t it interesting how God allows these “counter irritants” to tells us where the boundaries are? 🙂

“The Secret” is sorcery, pure and simple, as it purports to allow YOU to manipulate God’s universe.

As is Kabbalah,… and most (if not all) so-called “self-help” nonsense.

What do we say to SORCERY…!!?

NO, thank you…!

I liked your post, Keikiolu. Your definition of sorcery as letting YOU manipulate God’s universe is a good point. I know nothing about Kabbalah. Is it similar to the secret?

The Secret is just a fancy, ridiculous way of saying that if you work hard and have a positive attitude, you will get things in return. Not that complicated. All this energy stuff is just a scam. I watch Oprah and Ellen every day and they both have devoted more than one show to it and I turned it off both times. It seemed they were being sucked into philosophical and spirital nonsense IMO.
