We have to seperate the sin from the sinner. What troubles me with Oprah is her downsliding into this occult stuff. She has done a lot of good but as Bishop Sheen has said, one can be in mortal sin and be the most evil and yet have a tender side in feeding his sick, aged mother all of her meals. God does not give up on any of us…no matter how evil they are. And maybe He loves them more because of it. His Love wants to melt the evil away but only if the person is open to it. Our god is a gentle God. I have no idea if she was approached by any of her christian freidns about this…but I would guess yes. And if she has been warned of her occult penchant and does nothing about it, well, we have to leave that to God.

As for me, the book is garbage! There is enough books out there that are…very small deceptions that are not picked up and people are led to believing everything the book says like it was the Gospel Truth and yet, they do not react the same way with the Bible…go figure!

Only one verse comes to mind: ‘my people perish for lack of knowledge…’ Hosea

Why is Oprah beyond criticism? Oprah is not beyond criticism. It was the Satan reference that I think is so wrong. I ask that in all honesty and I hope I don’t sound flippant. Aren’t we all in danger of being seduced by the evil one without knowing it? I don’t consider Oprah “the evil one”. I know that is true in my own life. It should be even more ture for someone like Oprah, who has so much more influence over millions of people. George Bush has the same influence over millions of people and he isn’t referred to with devil references. It was just an absurd and mean comment. Judging by the tone, can that person be any MORE Catholic?

That is certainly a possibility…but we are not talking about ‘other Catholics’ and the ‘other Catholics’ do not have their own TV show. Any Catholic/Christian who reads this book is not on the right path and needs to be shown how New Age ‘works’. Sometimes New Age is so subtle…this is what is so frustrating…God bless but will be back hopefully with a link.

This thread is about Oprah…not George Bush, not other Catholics leading flock members astray. It is about one powerful woman with a large audience using her media platform to push ungodly material.

No one said she was the devil - however to condone a book with New Age undertones as a way to find the truth is just wrong. It goes against the Catholic church. Now that is the truth.

Why should this particular truth get you all hot and bothered? It’s the garbage that Oprah is peddling that should make you squimish.

No one said they did not like the lady. I personally enjoy Oprah and the great philanthropic things she has done - BUT now she has pushed the envelope. Is she now Giddy with her postion of power or just a pawn by a supernatural ill spirit?

Whatever it is - it is not from God and she is clearly leading people down a bad path when she pushed this trash.

Bella, I have always loved Oprah. I was thrilled to be at her “Backdraft” episode in 1991. For the last few years I have only seen the show rarely, it’s just on at a busy time for me. I think what everyone is saying here, is that she is influencing millions into occult practices that are forbidden. The promoters of the secret aren’t telling us this, they’re lying & claiming this is OK for Christians.

This is serious stuff that leads people into a false religion. I used to hear about the occult & think it meant a cult. It doesn’t. I still don’t know that much about it, but it involves harnessing powers, even supernatural powers that are not from God. One woman on a message board at Oprah’s site made a whistle appear in her bathroom, another is trying to live without any food. It involves channeling, sorcery, mediums, etc… These things are forbidden in the Old & New Testaments because they come from the devil. I never believed this stuff was real, but people who deal with the demonic know it is.

People are not trying to be judgemental. This is serious stuff that opens people up to the demonic & puts their souls at great risk. That’s why we are not happy with Oprah. The devil is very happy with her. That’s all we’re saying. The devil was very happy with me last week when I made my sister feel worse instead of better. He loved it when I practically ignored my husband for 2 nights in a row. It’s just that what Oprah is doing is winning more souls for him.

Asked if it is Christian, Beckwith replies No, & yes. “Yes, some Agape members are Christian”. “No, if by Christian you mean the acceptance of Jesus as the only saviour.” "Yes in the sense that Agape “includes Gnostic teachings”. “Agape teaches that Jesus was not the great exception, but rather the great example.” One fine Agape student learned that lesson well & last night on the Oprah site she called Jesus a bright young man…

I’m wondering why this wasn’t mentioned on Oprah’s show, especially when a brave woman in the audience stood, said she was a Christian & asked “Where is God in all of this?”.

Kowing the influence Oprah has, & seeing the people who already see this as the answer to all of life’s problems, this has me so concerned. If anyone else that is concerned feels so inclined, please talk to people about this. If you feel called to discuss it online, we could use your help on Oprah’s site & I’m sure tons of other places. If you haven’t discussed on these secular boards before, the people can get pretty rough. They attack your intelligence, & it’s really easy on an anonymous board to fire back & be judgemental. Then all the atheists & non-Christians see another Christian acting badly. They ignore you if you mention Satan & the Bible too much. They might listen if you have facts to back things up. If you are well-versed in the canonical gospels, a woman on Oprah is bashing the Bible’s validity. I remember reading disputes about this stuff before The Davinci Code came out, but I’ve forgotten the biblical history. I’ve got to go, but we can sure use some well-informed Christians talking about this…

Unfortunately my mom has bought into ths New Age stuff (although of course she denies that it’s New Age) and has a copy of “The Secret”. I watched a little bit with her, and I think it’s very shallow and self-centred - the idea that everything is supposed to work to YOUR OWN benefit - what about making sacrifices to help others? People who buy into the “Secret” seem to believe that you’re not really “spiritual” unless your life is perfect - who cares about a relationship with our Creator, it’s all about being happy.

And of course like most, if not all, New Age stuff, it claims that this “secret” was suppressed by powerful world leaders before. My mom claims that the reason the Church is opposed to this New Age (or “spiritual” as she calls it) stuff, it’s because we’re afraid that by people having “the secret” and other occult knowledge, they’ll “know” that Catholics have been wrong all along, and that we’re not on the right path.

Sigh, it’s like the Da Vinci Code all over again. And I think Ellen Degeneres was promoting “The Secret” on her show as well.

Please pray for my mom, that she’ll see the light and come back to the True Faith.

I’m not a big Oprah fan believe me, but after reading all the posts here has anybody actually read “The Secret”? It seems all I’m reading is hearsay evidence that this book is bad and should be avoided.

I’d much rather read the opinion of somebody that has actually read it.

You are so right Aimee…God bless you. Although within the prayer group that I belong it has been assigned to me to read these things as it is my gift. A gift I wish I never had. The prayer of Jabez became such a popular book at one time and yet, I was able to tear it apart. There was deception that the normal person would never have picked up for sure. I usually can feel a book before seeing it…I know this makes me strange but this gift has existed for a long time in my life now…

Exactly… Sounds like a form of watered-down “prosperity Gospel”. As far as New Age, let’s call a spade a spade here. It should be called Old Age–simply regurgitated paganism.
