I want to thank all of you for your well thought out, researched and plainly explained responses. My hubby is extemely excited about The Secret but it made me uneasy although I couldn’t p(name removed by moderator)oint why. You all have helped give voice to my concerns. I don’t think my husband has picked up on all the details. The Secret did finally get him out of a very deep depression (he has a medical history of this) and get him motivated enough to start working again so I felt some postive results from the positive thinking and motivation parts of the movie.

The most troublesome was the claim that the Catholic Church had ban the secret.
you want to know the source of 'the secret" in the context of this movie??? look up the ‘secrets’ source: Ester Hicks and the 'teachings of abraham"

amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/1401904599/dexteritysoft-20/

this book is 'channeled" - you know, new age channelling of disembodied wise being…
In order to write it, Ester Hicks channeled a group of non-physical beings collectively referred to as Abraham. The “SECRET” movie is based on the ‘wisdom’ of Abraham.
Ester is also featured as a commentator in the movie.

I have an alternative to the ‘secret’…

These words ring true, the movie does not:
Matthew 6:
"Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat (or drink), or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds in the sky; they do not sow or reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are not you more important than they? Can any of you by worrying add a single moment to your life-span? Why are you anxious about clothes? Learn from the way the wild flowers grow. They do not work or spin. But I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them.If God so clothes the grass of the field, which grows today and is thrown into the oven tomorrow, will he not much more provide for you, O you of little faith? So do not worry and say, ‘What are we to eat?’ or ‘What are we to drink?’ or ‘What are we to wear?’ All these things the pagans seek. Your heavenly Father knows that you need them all.But seek first the kingdom (of God) and his righteousness, and all these things will be given you besides.

one hand we have “the secret”… you make your future and determine your path.

on the other hand you have the REAL secret… let God determine your path, and let his path be yours. and he will always provide.

doesn’t ‘the secret’ sort of fly directly in the face of Matthew 6, where we told not to worry about where our wealths will come from?

chris smells the sulphur of the evil one in the 'secret"

Wow! All are great posts. I knew something was fishy about the Secret, based on the topic and them not giving praise to God. Thanks to all these posts, my suspicions were reinforced. Don’t get me wrong though; I do think there are positive points in the movie/book, with which I took. That is, focusing on strengthening my faith and trust in the Lord. Basically, living Mat 6. 🙂

Have any of you heard of “the secret”? Honestly, I don’t know much about it yet, but it looks suspicious in a New Age kind of way. Oprah recently had 2 shows discussing “the secret”, & thousands of people are convinced it’s the answer to all of life’s problems.

From the little I have gathered so far, “teachers” of the secret reveal a truth that only an elite few know, people like Einstein & Newton knew it & benefited greatly. Sounds a little like gnosticism. They reveal that everything in life is energies. There seems to be a lot of psychobabble positive thinking kind of stuff, which is harmless enough. They go on to teach that the universe is the source of everything, & we must open ourselves up to the universe.

I guess there are a lot of things in the universe I don’t want to open myself up to. It seems like an occult practice, but I don’t know that much about it. I’m sorry, I still don’t know how to link to things, but people are talking about it at oprah.com & on a site called thesecrettv.com (I’m sorry, I’m not sure if that’s the exact site, but it looks like a cheesy mix of The DaVinci Code & Harry Potter). Tons of people are thinking this is their answer to health, wealth & happiness. Seems spiritually dangerous to me.

I would NEVER look toward Oprah for guidance about anything. But I agree with you… it is very creepy that so many people do. I think Satan uses her to influence millions away from God. 😦

That’s possible. . ., indeed maybe even probable, in that I think Oprah is honestly convinced that she helps others and indeed has helped people. Those are exactly the sort of people that Satan works hardest to ‘win’. . . ones who want to do good, are praised for their good, and vulnerable to evil influences that look as though they are good. Pray for her and indeed for all people to realize that only God is the source of good and that nothing, that ‘no thing’, is good without God.

What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, yet loses his soul?

I suspect it could be harmful…kind of new age mumbling.

New way of presenting old stuff.

What a horrible, horrible thing to say and nothing could be further from the truth. You don’t have to like her, but to bring up Satan… that’s just wrong.

I do beg to differ…carol is right! Oprah claims herself to be christian and yet talks a LOT about New Age…and this book is one of them big time…and that is deceptive. Most Catholic/Christians are unaware of the dangers of New Age…they do not understand. Because everything is so POSITIVE!!! You only have to read Fr Mitch Pacwa’s book on New Age.

This book probably uses Scripture as their basis of truth…but it is a spin…don’t forget the devil ALWAYS uses a grain of truth…and that is what lures many! Be aware of these tricks! It is demonic and Oprah is doing demotic work here…because she claims to be a Christian. A wolf in sheep’s clothing to be sure!@!!!

I agree. After seeing a bit of the reaction that is happening after she has had 2 shows on “the secret” in 2 weeks, I think she is leading millions into the occult. I don’t think she’s doing it knowingly, but dark forces are only too happy to use her.

I would question whether she knows it or not…it makes for good publicity and brings in lots of dough. People get caught up with the good that she does…but they do not realize that the devil will kill with kindness and then go for the kill…

I must agree with you…I don’t think she does it knowingly…so far she has been able to resist Scientology …so that says something for her…after all the scientology stars on her show and John Trovolta trying to get her to read the scientology books…still she resists…but she has always been a bit new age…

Thanks for reminder of how shallow some Catholics can be.

I am thankful that they are in the minority.

Aimee…that is only because Scientology is overt…a lot of the new age stuff is covert! Scripture is usually quoted in a lot of the material.

I tend to lump them all together…but I understand what you are saying.

well if I invented my own religion called the Secret, intended for only a select few (of my own choosing, of course), the last place I would want it talked about is Oprah. Obviously if it is on Oprah it is no longer a secret, and if it is no longer a secret, where is the appeal?

Shoshana, I agree that occult practices can be covert & deceptive. I read a summary of the 2nd Oprah episode that discussed this. A woman in the audience was very concerned because she was a Christian, & asked several questions like “Where is God in all this?” The “experts” told her that it is not in conflict with the Christian faith. They said something like, whether you prefer to look at life as being controlled by God or the universe, all we have to do is put out positive energy, & we’ll attract all the good things in the universe. A lot of people just accept that answer & fall deeper & deeper into this.

You’re right, puzzleannie, but I guess the people selling it are more interested in making money than keeping “the secret”. The people buying into it are being told it is the answer to all of their problems. The women on Oprah’s message boards think this will help them to lose weight, find the perfect love, achieve great success & find wealth. One poster was claiming that if you harnessed the right energy or whatever, that you didn’t need food to survive…

Tell that to Job. Or Jesus. Or the countless Saints who were martyred for the faith. They put out “positive energy” and suffered nonetheless.

All good things come from God - not from our own “positive energy.”
