The Secret is just a dumbed down Master Key System for people who don’t understand Jungian ideas.

Hi there,my name is Paul and i am just newly registered!Good day to you all! I am all the way from the North of Ireland!I have always had a strong faith, and always felt close to God, and at one stage in my life i was very unwell but with the help of God,family, friends and medication i got through it! During my rehabilitation i read alot of self-help help material and to this day i still do,however im getting very confused!! For example the secret dvd and book!I do believe that how we think does have an effect on the our outer world and that being positive does increase the chances of getting positive results and vice versa for negative thinking, however i feel the secret book has gone a bit overboard! It basically implies that it is our thoughts that are responsible for everything in our life and we get what we think about! if we think about what we dont want we get it,if we think about what we do want, we get it!! But what i would like to add to this,is what about september 11th??,what about hurricanes, volcanoes,in which people are killed, famines wars!! does this all come about from peoples thoughts??absolutely not!! There is no mention of God,and basically it implies that he does not exist, there is just some “universal power” that we can tap into anytime we need to!!Yes i do believe in personal responsibility but how can any of the victims be responsible for their death by how they were thinking??I believe God gives us tests, gives us examples,so that we can learn from them and move closer to him in the future!!The secret says that if we are thinking positively all the time then we will never get a negative result!! Again i belive that thinking positively and believing in yourself is a good thing and it increases your chances of success but i dont feel that our thoughts are powerful enough to cause natural disasters etc etc!
This book i see is a bestseller in america, yes if you were to skim read it for a bit of inspiration i.e. to try and think more positively,be more thankful, more loving that wiuld be ok but it is too atheisitic and too much based on fiction than fact!
I would love to hear everybodys reaction to this topic!!
Thanks and God bless
Paul

Paul,… you’re one wise and insightful, and probably lovely, person. 🙂

You too see the “quasi-deistic utopian” goofiness of “The Secret”, which is the sensible view of such nonsense.

Without God, people can make up any sort of whackiness that sells to the masses, who are always looking for a non-God basis for doing as they wish.

It’s the “doing as they wish” part that is most saddening, isn’t it?

Also,… I’m rather annoying in that I like to see some white-space in a post (among other annoying habits!), and using the key between “sections” of your posts might make them a bit more easy to read.

Love 'ya, dude. E aloha nui 'oe…!

Hope the Old Country, that lovely green place, is doin’ well…!? 🙂

Mahalo ke Akua…!
E pili mau na pomaikai ia oe. Aloha nui.

I’m a constant reader. I read 200+ books a year (it helps that I read very fast and don’t watch TV). The one genre I can’t stand is self-help. I’ve read some and my reactions can be broken down into two parts:
  1. Oh come on do you expect me to believe that!
  2. Well that’s only common sense.
I work in a book store during the Christmas season and I stop by quite often - gotta feed my book habit - and I can’t believe the number of people who buy The Secret. I thumbed though it, read about it, had reaction number one and then went off to buy Michael Connolly’s new mystery.

I have not seen it and don’t really wish to but I wanted to tell you that your explanation is the best. It has giving me a lot to think about. Like do I cause my own heaven or hell? I sometimes (a lot) don’t aknowledge the negative or reallity am trying to stay upbeat and am impatient but learn that God has a purpose. I appreciate your post. Dessert

I agree! I still think it’s a great book for positive thinking, but it sounds like atheists wrote it. Other factors it leaves out is our free will and God’s will. We learn from challenges. Thinking positivily can help us through the challenges, but by no means prevent them.

It is also very dramatic. They should call it the law of attraction. It is no secret tthat The Secret is not a secret any longer. And with the “Every great person in history knew this” nonsense!

The trouble is, not all people realize this. Some people just believe every single thing they read…That is what I don’t like about the Secret.

wow!!! Now am confused, this book really got me through hard times, you know positive thinking and all. Not thinking negative thoughts, falling in love with yourself before you can love someone else.
I am a strong catholic who goes for mass everyday, and also used to be a minor seminarian four years ago. This book was recommended by someone on the radio,so i rushed to buy it, and boy did i enjoy it. I only decide to do some checking on the book because some of its concepts were a bit confusing, like our thoughts emit frequencies which go out to the universe. Wanted to check if some of these things were real, but reading all the discussions on this forum’s got me confused.
Its talks about everything positive, and pushes positivity, love and not concentrateing on our negativity. To be honest i actually beflieved what they said about, visualising and thinking about what you want, through constant thought or thinking. Now i dont know anymore, this book gave me hope, somebody help!!!:o

From what I understand, at best this book can be called New Age nonsense…in which case stay away! At worst, I have heard it called heretical, and a repeat of Satan’s first temptation to Adam and Eve…in which case run as fast as you can in the other direction. Let’s disect what you yourself have said about this book. Please note I do not mean to be offensive or rude, so if anything I say comes off that way, please forgive me.

A book about some “secret” got you through some hard times? Surely positive thinking is not bad, but to ignore negative thoughts certainly endangers you of leaving reality. God is the only one who sustains you through good or bad times…not merely positive thinking. We must turn always to God in prayer, not to ourselves. Furthermore, before you can love anyone including yourself you must love God.
our thoughts emit frequencies which go out to the universe.
No. This “law of attraction” is a huge lie. Furthermore, it attempts to turns oneself into god. No longer do we need to rely on God for anything, we can control things ourself. This is an incredibly dangerous and anti-Christian way of thinking, so stay away.
To be honest i actually beflieved what they said about, visualising and thinking about what you want, through constant thought or thinking.
Again reaffirming how this book can turn us into believing that we are our own gods. Remember that we can do nothing except through The One True God who sustains our existence every moment of our life.

If you notice, most who bash the book here have not even read it. They go on what others who havent read it say, or those who read it with a biased mind. I for one find absolutely NOTHING that is in conflict with Catholic or Christian beliefs. The problem is that the magnitude of which God created man is often disregarded. The construction of the universe and all it contains is God’s domain, why cant he make laws such as described in the book… Those who want to jump on the “its New Age” bandwagon also seem to want to tie God’s hands and make Him as they wish Him to be. They would perhaps be equivilent to those who may have told Moses, “There is no way God can part the Red Sea”. Let God be God, and let man be His creation. Dont be confused my friend, enjoy the book and what it gave you. Again, who knows, perhaps God wanted you to read it!

The Secret has channelled by a spriit called Abraham…:tsktsk:

actually no, thats Abraham-Hicks, who is not in the updated version. You need to keep the facts straight.
Code:
What about these facts?

Last Sunday evening the Hickses relaxed in their $1.4 million luxury bus parked outside the Rancho Cordova Marriott near Sacramento, where they had just finished a six-hour workshop on the law of attraction in the hotel ballroom. Three hundred people had paid $195 each to hear Ms. Hicks, a former secretary, summon otherworldly spirits she says speak through her. The spirits, who collectively use the name Abraham, answered participants’ questions.
“I don’t have a lover yet,” one woman said.
Abraham, whose speaking voice is rounder, quicker and more computerlike than Ms. Hicks’s natural voice, replied by repeating the woman’s phrase roughly 20 times and then explained it contained its own negativity, which was leaving the woman paddling upstream on the river of life.
The audience applauded.

irrelevent to the ideas in the book, you seem to have this one sticking point. one person, who was later deleted, does not the whole idea make.

Not irrelevant at all in my book. What is contained in the book has been channelled by spriits. If that isn’t something to worry about, I do not what is.

No, what ONE person says is claimed to be channeled, and she is not even in the final version. You seem to want to focus just on this and completely ignore everything else that is said in the book. It really does not matter if you read it or not, or agree with it or not, just be accurate in your approach.

Well, I saw the DVD and Holy Scripture was twisted to their own crazy ideas. Then, I must rent the book…buying it would out of the question. It isn’t only me that has said it is channelled by a spirit, there are many catholic sites who claim that. Why would I not listen to that? It is enough to not read read it coach.

well sorry, but then both you and they would be incorrect if it is stated that the entire book is channeled. period. as far as not reading it, suit yourself. I for one prefer to render my judgements of matters based on my own rather than what I am told. And what specifc Scripture was “twisted”? Actually, nevermind, I think this thread has already outlived its usefulness

Hello, I am a new member to this site and am very glad I’ve found it. I have not read " The secret" (in hushed tone), but have unfortunately bought the DVD before I read this thread. I am not going to go on about Oprah or her dealings. She is a media figure(Entertainer) and should be regarded as such.

As for “The Secret” (again, in hushed tone), I was initially turned on to this by an aunt of mine who lives in Santa Fe NM ( Land of Enchantment). Now With that said, she is also now or should I say was raised Catholic and still holds many beliefs ( to my knowledge).

After first watching this DVD it kind of left me creaped out by the way it is way over produced. It reminded me of certain “pop stars” who really have no talent but are produced in music videos with a lot of smoke and mirrors to make them appear more talented than they really are.

After watching the video a second time with a friend who is also Catholic, we just kind of looked at each other with a dazed look. I cannot and will not say that The Secret is “evil” in the Hitler/flames and pitch fork kind of way. I will say that it may lead astray the gullable, naive and vulnerable to the New age hype it skillfully tries to pass off.

On the other hand, since it does not accnowledge God and Jesus as the only source to EVERYTHING, it is not Cristian and certainly not Catholic. When watching or reading " The Secret" ( shhhh) one can if they want, substitue the words Energy, Universe and Law of attraction with God, Jesus and Prayers.

For the logical minded person who watches this with some sort of scepticism you can come away with a few practical messages even is you dont subscribe to the mystiscm aspect. After all, how can having a positive attitude, working hard and putting your mind to things be bad?

As mentioned, it could have done without all of the Universe, geenie, energy stuff. The video might as well came with a “power crystal” or “enery rock” if it was going to go that route.

After further discussion with my friend, and as someone else noted in past posts, this has a psudo Tony Robbins late night infomercial feel to it. Im not going to go off and say that it is channeled by spirits or some other theory. Its junk phylosophy at its best that takes advantage on the vulnerable in the same way that Whitening toothpaste will give you a hollywood smile or that green tea pills will make you a supermodel. The placebo effect is very powerful.

It is best for me at least not to cast stones at something and someone I dont agree with, plain and simple. As there is not one (person or group) that I agree with 100% of the time.

With my limited knowledge of the past, this computer I’m writing on and the electricity powering it may have at one time or another would have comdemned me as a sorcerer or witch. Im sure you get my point.

In summary, I will probably throw this DVD away and now regret wasting my money on something I already knew and very common sense. But then again “common sense is not so common”.

This is what I know to be common sense to this Catholic.:
  1. That if I keep a good atittude and stay positive, Im probably going to be happier in life as will the people around me. (duh)
  2. That if I pray and reflect on what I pray for I will always get what I need. Not always what I want, but always what I need.
I welcome your thoughts

God Bless and May peace be with you
