I found this on the US Conference of Catholic Bishops site - for Earth Day you may want to propose that your parish become a “St. Francis congregation” with a pledge that your parish agrees to prayer, education and action on behalf of the Lord’s Earth.

usccb.org/sdwp/ejp/certificate.shtml

Are you going do do anything to honor God’s gift of the Earth today?

Are you considering any changes in your daily life that acknowledges an understanding that we are stewards of creation?

I am not going to propose our parish change its name but I think it would be neat if a new parish did this. It seems a lot of people think you cannot be “green” and Catholic. Just make sure you worship the Creator not the creation:)

What I understand is this isn’t changing the name of a parish but working to embrace these concepts… yes Catholics should lead in the ‘green’ because we praise God in our love of His most precious creation! 🙂

Sometimes folks think this for a good reason. Many of the “Green” movement solutions involve anti-human life philosophies.

I agree. It just seems like society has set it up that you cannot be both. We as Catholics need to show that we can care about this topic also.

We’ve always lived simply but as you say, worship the Creator, not His creation.

The founder of Earth Day was a population zero zealot names Gaylord Nelson. Here is the link to thread.

“The Politician:
Wisconsin Senator Gaylord Nelson was as progressive as they came. His fight for safe birth control in 1970 prompted the national governmental dispute to be dubbed “The Nelson Pill Hearings.”…”

The bigger the population gets, the more serious the problems become .… We have to address the population issue. The United Kingdom, with the U.S. supporting it, took the position in Cairo in 1994 that every country was responsible for stabilizing its own population.”

Sounds like a nut to me, but hey, Christmas use to be a pagan holiday. Lets make something good out of it!

Earth Day doesn’t sound like a very catholic day if the founder wanted to get rid of children.

I do remember something about St. Nicholas having to do something with Christmas.😃

Christmas is not about Santa. He was not the cornerstone of the holiday. Saint Nicholas was a bishop that was added later. Christmas, Easter were both pagan holidays. The church redid them for good.

Earth Day is not a “holy” day although if we could move it a little closer to St. Patrick’s Day, we could probably use all of that “green”.

Who said anything about making it a holy day? I was talking about making something good out of something bad when you posted the article about the nut who founded this day.

I stand corrected. I’m a little cynical when it comes to changing the meaning of this day to something positive.

👍 I think this is a great idea!!! - We can always take something like this and reflect it in the light of faith!

I think we should always be careful of knee jerk reactions - as people of faith we can always draw the line to where the value lies - an opportunity to thank God for His gift of creation and strive to find ways to protect this precious gift! Peace!

It’s nice that this particular 25,000 mile circumference spherical ball of metal, water, minerals, and dirt managed to get its own day.

Mars didn’t get one. Neither did Venus or Jupiter. But hey, soon all the planets in the universe are going to be lobbying for their own special day.
