Easter Sunday. It just seems to fit better. Christ spent three days in darkness and when he rose it was light outside. Plus, not going on Mass on Easter feels a little weird.
It is very joyful.I can see why Easter is joyful.I just didn’t know if the Vigil was more of a celebratory Mass or a sorrowful Mass.
Very JoyfulRejoice heavenly powers! Sing choirs of angels!
Exult, all creation around God’s throne!
Jesus Christ, our King is risen!
Sound the trumpet of salvation!
at my previous seminary I would be up to about 2am maybe even as late as 3am. Our Vigil mass started that late (It is at a monastery so that is why) so it didn’t feel strange not to go to mass the next dayEaster Sunday. It just seems to fit better. I’m sorry you haven’t had good experiences at the Vigil. I don’t know if beautiful is the best way to describe it. The Vigil is the most joyful Mass of the year, at the Vigil there should be much rejoicing and praising God. He is risen rejoice.I must be the only person on the planet who does not like the Easter Vigil.I have attended Easter Vigils in at least ten OF parishes in two countries, so I know I’ve given it a fair shot. I have trouble believing it’s a problem at the parochial level because I’ve attended this Mass in so many different places and didn’t like any of them. So it must be me. I just don’t like it.
My current priest doesn’t understand this at all, underscoring the idea that I’m the problem. To him (and to most other people I’ve met), the Easter Vigil is the most beautiful Mass of the year.
The only reason I would attend the Easter Vigil now is if I’m serving it, and I do everything in my power to make sure that doesn’t happen.
That said, I would be willing to try the Easter Vigil in the EF.
In my current parish, it’s mostly solemn.
There was a parish in Nova Scotia that used to have their Vigil in the middle of the night. Their “new fire” was actually a bonfire that called the parishioners to the church. When they originally did it the Pastor didn’t expect to have too many at the Vigil but the church was packed. I don’t know if they still do it that way but they had great success in the early years.at my previous seminary I would be up to about 2am maybe even as late as 3am. Easter Vigil for me this year, partly for this reason, to free up a little more of Sunday for the extended family. Also, the timing is a little more convenient so that you have Easter Sunday morning free to be with family!![]()
What’s wrong with it? I was just asking which people preferred to go to more. I don’t see how that’s offensive.I am not voting in this nonsensical poll .
It is in very bad taste and should have no place on a so-called Catholic forum .

I guess that might be part of my problem with it. “On the third day, He rose again,” not the evening before. I would actually prefer to attend an Easter Day Mass at dawn, but good luck finding one of those these days…I’m sorry you haven’t had good experiences at the Vigil. No offense taken.Note: no dispresect to your parish, but a solemn easter vigil sounds like a contradiction.
Yes, we renew our Baptismal Promises at Easter Sunday morning Mass.Do we renew our baptismal promises at the morning Mass?
That is one of the reasons why I go to the vigil, to renew baptismal promises. I think it is very important to do that but can’t remember if it is done in the morning Mass.

Since the Jews counted a day from sundown to sundown, it is perfectly legitimate to celebration the Resurrection after sundown at the Easter Vigil. That was the beginning of the third day. The Bible does not say Christ rose at dawn on Sunday. It says that is when the women went to the tomb. Christ could have risen at anytime before dawn after sundown on Sat., that being when the third day started. We have no idea at what actual time he rose, but we do know it was before dawn, as he was already risen by the time the women went to the tomb.I guess that might be part of my problem with it. “On the third day, He rose again,” not the evening before. I would actually prefer to attend an Easter Day Mass at dawn, but good luck finding one of those these days…
All I can say is that every time I’ve gone to the Vigil, I couldn’t wait for it to end.
No offense taken. To be honest, I served last year’s Vigil and I might not be remembering it clearly as it seems effortless to erase the experience from my memory. I may be able to let you know about this year’s, since I’m having a :slapfight: with my pastor about my serving this time around and it looks like I’m going to lose.
Just out of curiosity, what do you mean when you say you "served’ at the Easter Vigil?I guess that might be part of my problem with it. “On the third day, He rose again,” not the evening before. I am blessed to be a sacristan.Just out of curiosity, what do you mean when you say you "served’ at the Easter Vigil?
Can you elaborate on this? It’s my understanding that no Mass is “more holy” than any other.I prefer the Easter Vigil Mass because from what I understand, it’s the holiest Mass of the year.
It is wrong because it leads to such posts as # 38 which says : " I prefer the Easter Vigil Mass because from what I understand, it’s the holiest Mass of the year. "What’s wrong with it? I was just asking which people preferred to go to more. I don’t see how that’s offensive.![]()
