I have heard to stay away from yoga and other eastern practices. Any others? Is accupucture also not good?

Yoga can be practiced without any religious trappings, purely as exercise. Most yoga teachers do use eastern terms such as Chakra, but these are terms for the energy flow in the body and are not necessarily religious. Just check with the teacher.

Acupuncture is a medical practice and you can have it performed without the practitioner saying anything to you except, “Does that feel better?” Acupuncture does work and is covered by many insurance policies.

Acupuncture is also very effective 🙂

You should be able to find many yoga exercise groups where non religous yoga is taught.

As John7 said, Kundalinin yoga is not for you. It has a very strong Hindu religous element in its teaching. (I mean no disrespect to the Hindu belief system.)

Decide for yourself. No one can make you do yoga or any other highly spiritually enlightening religious practices. People will often lie about these religious practices and say “Demons” or the so-called “Devil” is behind them. They’ve been around longer then the Devil has and saying their from the Devil is exactly like saying Judas was actually Xenu ( Xenu is a Scientology invention). The same thinking can be applied to ancient Pagan religions. Saying Ra = “Satan” is like saying Darth Vader is Kain (from Genesis), Darth Vader was invented long after Kain was, and the Devil was invented long after Ra or the Indian Spiritual practices were.

I do believe in good and evil. The same way that we have angels and good spirits, there are also demons and evil spirits. I believe that as Christians we should arm ourselves and be ready to battle evil. The evil one uses all sorts of things to draw us close to him and away from Christ.

here’s another thread about yoga

MAG777 says on his/her profile s/he is a Catholic. This is the Catholic Answers forum website. I would guess s/he wants Catholic answers.

MAG, stay away from any practices that have their roots in other religions. If they begin treating it as a path to ‘‘englightenment’’, ‘‘moksha’’, ‘‘nirvana’’ then back away as it is a practice found within Hinduism. The movements themselves, even the breating exercises have no supernatural connotations per se. If you are practicing yoga for health, fair enough, best of luck, if you are relying on Yogic postures and meditation as a pathway to Heaven, then you are mistaken.

Yoga wasn’t developed as a health practice, but as a way of detaching the self from the body by altering the mind-body relationship. The effects can include relaxation, certainly, and flexibility, but they can also include oxygen deprivation to some brain lobes, weakening of some reflexes and disorientation. The breathing that goes with the positions is part of what is both relaxing and dangerous about it.
If you’re on an acupuncture table and the practitioner says anything about manipulating your energy, ask them to stop. Energy manipulation involves a loss of spiritual boundaries.
