I have an addiction to pornography. I went to confession recently and confessed this but there was a particulary form of pornagraphy that I looked at. I wanted to say it but i thought I better ask the priest if he wanted to hear details. He said no, trust me. Now this scruplosity is eating me. I feel like I am not in God’s grace and im unforgivable because I didnot mention this form of pornagraphy. Any advice?

If he told you not to give him details, you didn’t need to give him details.

Even if it was kiddy porn (the worst I can think of that wouldn’t get me banned from this forum), it’s not morally any worse (porn is porn–it is worse to make since that involves actually doing such an act); it just violates more of society’s rules, and means the psychological problem is worse.

This really is just my :twocents: though. They have that expression in Australia, right?

What you feel doesn’t necessarily define what you are. Additionally, if your salvation is based on whether you feel saved, then you really don’t need a savior beyond yourself. “Lord, I’m not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and I shall be healed.” We all profess our unworthiness based upon our individual efforts and merits, but we also express our faith in Christ’s ability to save us anyway. So to believe that you have the power to deny your own salvation on the technicality that you didn’t expound upon the porn you’re addicted to is to say that you are in control of the grace imparted in the sacrament. You in essence have made yourself the defendant, prosecutor, jury, and judge…when in reality you’re just a sinner in need of the saving grace imparted in the confessional.

Say the Jesus prayer,

“Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.”

Repeat as many times as needed.

I agree that the priest doesn’t need specifics, he will ask for kind of sin and number of times. If there is something that is vague or needs clarificition he will ask. If he gave you absolution then God has forgiven your sins then you are forgiven. That is something that I found hard to grasp after confession sometimes. We have to be careful in our thinking that we are not “forgivable” and let go of the guilt. Be happy and draw strength from the Grace you have been given to beat this addiction. You’ve taken the first and most important step in admission of a problem. Now the key is like quiting smoking… to figure out what daily habits you have that gives you the time to look at those things and pray for the strength to change those habits. It’s not something that will change overnight. You will slip and go to those things again, but realize it and be more aware of what triggers those urges to view those things and don’t put yourself in that situation. Look up Jason Evert on stopping porn addiction. Hope this helps.
Be strong and Don’t Be Afraid

I’ll just agree with what everyone else has been saying. The priest doesn’t need the specifics for your sins to be forgiven. If he did he would ask. The fact that you asked him if he needed more details and he said “no” makes it even more apparent that your sins were forgiven.

This is good advice. As I always tend to believe, confession shouldn’t take more than 3-4 minutes per person if one goes regularly and prepares themselves properly. Sin is sin - Lying is lying, adultery is adultery, etc. If the priest wants/needs specifics he’ll ask.

Priests definitely do not need specifics unless they ask for it. And since he didn’t, I’d trust him. Maybe he was looking out for himself too, you know. Priests are human just like us, and they don’t need more details than necessary.

Just a thought as a former scruples sufferer and a horrible worry-wart… have you thought about maybe your worries/scrupulosity is not that you didn’t confess the type of porn but rather that maybe you don’t intend in your heart of hearts to avoid the near occasion of sin (internet, mags, whatever source)? I don’t say this as if I know at all what is in your mind or as an assumption. It just is a thought that crossed my mind and thought it might apply:shrug:
