Eating pork vs The Bible

Jesus preached to Jews who then became ‘Christians’ but they were still ‘jews’. So can we say that those Christians who are descendants of Jews are still under the law while the Gentile Christians are not… even so…

The problem is it seems that Jesus broke the law. Jesus told his followers to follow it- and if he broke the law he was not sinless on the cross (the salvation is challenged), and the law is NOT fulfilled, which is what Paul quotes as a reason that the law need not be followed (remember PAUL was a JEW!). Please enlighten me.

I am posting my response from the other thread that is similar to this thread. I am surprised that no one has posted somethig similiar to what I have posted, perhaps it is because it is night time over there in the United States of America.

I am re-posting it here so that it can enter the thread discussion as it is pertinent as well, and you did refer me to this thread as well.

So I am responding to both threads in the same manner.

Either Jesus kept the law perfectly and was without sin, or either he did not keep the Law perfectly and was with sin.

Jesus did not sin at all. To imply that he broke the Law would be to imply that he would sin. It would seem my friend you playing with heresy.

Ahhh I see under your religion “It’s complicated” hence your non-Catholic answer. Okay now that I know where you are coming from, I shall not dialogue because if you are not willing to accept Sacred Scripture, Sacred Tradition, and the Magisterial Teaching of the Catholic Church, I am wasting my time.

So which is it my friend? Do you wish to accept the Teachings of the Church or wish to define things according to your point of view.

I know this sounds kind of harsh, but I am getting older in life and don’t have time to patsy around with the One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic Faith.

You wish to work from Sola Scriptura, which my friend, is a heresy and is declared to be Anathema. Divine Revelation is NOT contained in Scripture alone. Divine Revelation is also found in Sacred Tradition and the Magisterium of the Catholic Church.

All I can say is that I will pray for you to have the gift of faith and quit getting hung up on trivial things such as Jesus eating pork and what not, and focus on the more important things as Jesus has come to die for all, but those who reject him and die unrepenting in mortal sin will go to Hell. * Worry about your eternal salvation as opposed to trivial things.*

Now I can get some sleep knowing that my conscience is at ease and both your threads are replied to.

If you don’t believe that Jesus is God, that God created the kosher laws for certain purposes, and that God can and did offer easier and harsher versions of the Law, through time, as he saw fit and in response to various things happening in salvation history (as is fully chronicled in the Bible), then I suppose you have a problem with Jesus changing the kosher laws.

However, if you don’t believe all that, you probably don’t care what the heck Jesus has to say about the kosher laws, or you don’t care what the Bible says. You don’t care about Noah, Abraham, the Golden Calf, Baal Peor, Peter’s dream, or any of the other stuff. You don’t care whether we’re talking firstborn priests or Levite priests or priests according to the line of Melchizedek, or anything.

If you do care, there are plenty of good materials out there about salvation history and the Covenant, and the various versions of the Law in force at various times. Neither Jewish nor Christian sources make a secret of this.

Based on scripture:

1. First, we were vegetarians (garden of eden);
2. Later we were given “all” animals to eat (no distinction between clean and unclean);
3. At Sinai, Israelites were given the laws of Moses which included restriction on eating “unclean” animals (commonly referred to as pork and shell fish - but its more than that) and legislating other requirements.
4. In the New Testatment, all foods are made clean (the many verses cited above) - though we are also told not to do things that would be a stumbling block to others. So, Jewish Christians have “liberty” to follow the dietary laws (or other laws of Moses) so long as they don’t believe doing so affects justification or sanctification - and similarly have liberty (like all Christians) to eat any foods.

Interestingly, there is some teaching in the Talmud that in the end times, all animals might again be made clean (interesting).

Why might God do this? One speculation is that God created the mosaic laws to separate the Israelites from Gentiles to be a light to demonstrate a distinction between the Holy and the profane. But this covenant of separation was not to last forever (jer 31:31) - there would some day be a new covenant and the messiah would usher it in and become a light to the Gentile nations.

Jesus came and broke down the barriers between Jew and Gentile there no longer being any distinction in Christ Jesus - thus, the need to obersve dietary restrictions and other aspsects of the mosaic law ceased.

We saw resistance to this in Acts, Galations and Hebrews with some Jewish Christians trying to convince Gentiles to become bound by the law of moses. This was expressly rejected in the Jerusalem counsel.

So - refrain from pork and shell fish if you like, and eat it if you like, but do all for the glory of God and without judgement on other believers.
