Ecclesia Dei commission to meet as new rumors swirl

Vatican, Dec. 11, 2006 (CWNews.com) - The pontifical Ecclesia Dei commission will meet in a plenary session on Tuesday, December 12, to discuss plans to allow broader use of the traditional Latin Mass.

The meeting of the Ecclesia Dei commission-- which was set up in 1988 by Pope John Paul II (bio - news) to address the pastoral concerns of traditionalist Catholics-- has revived speculation that Pope Benedict XVI (bio - news) is on the verge of releasing a motu proprio expanding use of the traditional Tridentine rite.

Benedict XVI shortens the timing for a reconciliation with the followers of Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre.

The “Ecclesia Dei” Commission, established for this purpose by John Paul II, will meet tomorrow in a first plenary session to discuss the question of the liberalization of the Mass in Latin.

The meeting of December 12 is reported by the French news agency I.Media and will include the presence of Cardinal Ricard, a member of the Commission and president of the French Episcopal Conference.

But “first plenary meeting” implies that there will be many more before anything is released.

But if its anything like the rumour in one of your previous posts… there is no point in the said document being procured - as it would change little.
 
The “private” issue has already been solved. The PCED has time and again told priests they are free to use the 1962 Missal “privately”…“private” has just never been defined. Similarly, the PCED has no problem with priests…or lay people…using the 1962 Breviary “privately”…or even older breviaries.

The issue is about public Masses. That’s always been the issue.

Depends on how a private Mass is defined. 😃 But I agree, it still needs a bit of work.

I know- I know…

But if it is not done carefully and thoughtfully it could be disasterous. Imagine altar girls, lay people distributing holy communion, mass facing the people, lay readers and all other Novus Ordo practices being allowed at the TLM. They must insure that the 1962 liturgical rubrics are adhered to without any modification whatsoever.

I remember a radio program a while ago on Catholic Answers Live that said the Church is well aware of the problems with the New Rite- yet to impose the old rite as should be done is not an easy thing to do and even to allow a “general indult” is not as easy as it seems.

One example is the Liturgical Calendar-

Those of us who attend the TLM regularly will want Corpus Christi to be on the Thursday as it is still celebrated in Rome and also the feast of Christ the King to remain on the original day as it still is in TLM only parishes like mine. There is also the time of Septuagisima that must be followed according to the 1962 Missal as well as veiling statues during Lent… it is MUCH MORE complicated than everyone thinks-

No more wine glasses instead of gold chalices, proper altar linens (according to the 1962 laws and not todays requirements), relics must be in the altar, etc.

I could go on and on…

Lay people must wear cassocks when in the Sanctuary, no flag of the nation or even the papal flag allowed in the Sanctuary.

Just wait for a EDIT “traditionalist” to show up at the TLM at a local parish when things are not properly done and 1962 liturgical law is not adhered to.

This is a classic example of CWN-WT-- Catholic World News wishful thinking. It seems to me that they hope to drive the news instead of reporting the news.

Ooooh trust me. I attend an indult parish. Many of those types are very quick to point on even one tiny little mishap about anything. If more Novus Ordo laymen would do the same I am sure we wouldn’t have half of the problems we see.

“The publication of the Motu Proprio from the Pope which will liberalize the celebration of the Latin Mass according to the Missal of Saint Pius V is close.” Who affirmed this was Cardinal Jorge Arturo Medina Estevez, member of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, which met this morning to discuss the liberalization of the Mass in Latin. “We studied the document with tranquility,” the Cardinal affirmed. “We discussed [it] together for over 4 hours and to make some corrections to the text of the Motu Proprio.” The next step belongs to Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos (president of the commission), who will present the text to Benedict XVI. There shall perhaps be another meeting of the Ecclesia Dei Commission, Medina added. Another member of the [Commission], the Cardinal of Lyon [sic → Bordeaux], Jean Pierre [sic] Ricard, did not wish to make any comment, underlining that “[he] is bound to the pontifical secret”.

Wow this may come quickly. Not to my diocese though…unfortunately.

The cardinal told the Roman news agency I Media that the results of today’s discussions would be presented to the Holy Father by Cardinal Dario Castrillon Hoyos (bio - news), the chairman of the Ecclesia Dei commission. He suggested that the Pope might then schedule publication of the document. Cardinal Medina Estevez indicated that he did not anticipate further discussion of the matter by the Ecclesia Dei commission.

Now just think…what if the pope said a Tridentine Rite High Mass on the High Altar at St. Peter’s Basilica for Midnight Mass this Christmas as the way to introduce the motu proprio!👍
