No, I think the 12 Apostles were called “The Twelve”. Any Disciples that happened to be with them were called “and the rest”.
Don’t mix Paul’s words with Luke’s. It was Luke who said “the eleven and the rest”. Paul just said “the Twelve”. Like I said Paul does not say twelve what and to read something in to the scriptures that is not there is not good exogesis.
My dear Ink, if one “is numbered with”, that means one is considered a part of that group.
But one can be part of a group without being one of the group. The very fact that scripture says Matthias was numbered with the eleven apostles means he is not one of them. If he were then scripture would say he was numbered with the twelve apostles. There were eleven before his selection and there is eleven after. How is he an Apostle.
Am I wrong in thinking this? No, if someone is counting members of a basketball team, and I am numbered with them, that means I’m a member of that basketball team.?QUOTE]

Not necessarily, in Congress votes are primarily along party lines but still some democrats vote with rebublicans. That does not make them republicans even though their votes are counted with the republicans. Scripture, it seems goes a long way to not say Matthias was an Apostle. It would be a lot easier if it said, “Matthias, an Apostle…”. But it never does. Yet scripture has no problem in calling Paul and apostle. It does so 13 times.
NotWorthy;7321461:
And notice that in Acts 2, Then Peter stood up with the Eleven
, raised his voice, and proclaimed to them, "You who are Jews, indeed all of you staying in Jerusalem. Let this be known to you, and listen to my words.

If Peter was among the Eleven Apostles, then it would have read, “Then Peter stood up among the Eleven…” or “Then Peter stood up with the rest of the Eleven…”

Again eleven WHAT???. Remember the Apostles were also bishops. Scripture does not say, ‘’“Then Peter stood up among the Eleven Apostles” It never says the word Apostles. Peter stood up with the eleven leaders of the church. Those leaders were comprised of ten Apostle/bishops and one bishop.
Also, notice Peter’s words as they cast lots: ***You, Lord, who know the hearts of all, show which one of these two you have chosen to take the place in this apostolic ministry ***
from which Judas turned away to go to his own place.

Having an apostolic ministry is not the same as being an apostle. What was the apostles mission? Was it nott to go into the world to teach the nations. People are still doing that today but they are not called apostles. They are called missionaries. Both apostle and missionary mean the same thing, to send forth. One is Greek and one is Latin.
And I think you are using dear St. Christopher to rationalize any disagreement you have with Church teaching.
Not so. Both scripture and the church teach that there were twelve Apostles. Every christian non Catholic denomination teaches the same. There is more agreement in christianity on there being twelve Apostles than there is on the Trinity. I am in perfect agreement with scripture the Church and all of christianity. You and others want to have 13 or 14 Apostles. So who is not in agreement with scripture, the Church and all of christianity?
Notice even the Holy Spirit agrees with the Apostleship being fulfilled in 12 members, for it is immediately after Peter’s binding decision to include a new member to complete the group that the Holy Spirit descends on them with tongues of fire.
That is a real stretch. Just because one event follows another does not mean the second event confirms the first. Also there appears to be a passage of time between Acts 1:26 and Acts 2:1. What occurs in the interim? It is interesting that scripture uses the similar words to describe Judas and Matthias. In Acts 1:17 Peter says of Judas, “For he was numbered among us, and was allotted his share in this ministry.” while Acts 1:26 says of Matthias, “…and he was numbered with the eleven apostles.” In both verses scripture stops short of saying they were Apostles. But Scripture has no such problem is claiming Paul to be an Apostle. Over and over no less than thirteen times scripture calls Paul an Apostle.

Ink,

Start another thread and invite me. I’d love to share with you some more on this, but others don’t deserve to be involved in this, unless they wish to.

Love you, brother!
