Eckhart Tolle - New Age Movement. What is the Catholic Teaching on these matters?

Eckhart Tolle is a New Age Guru through and through. Here are just a few of his beliefs that stand in contrast to the Catholic faith.
  • There is no God as the Bible teaches.
  • WE are God. We need to remember our divinity by achieving divine enlightenment.
  • Jesus is just one of many enlightened avatars or “divine mothers” like Buddha and others
  • We are all one, connected to everything in the universe.
  • There is no good and bad, only good. Everything “bad” is an illusion. Forgiveness is
unnecessary because nothing wrong has ever happened.
  • Jesus’ death, resurrection, and ascension are myths.
  • There is no place called heaven. Heaven is our inner consciousness.
There is MUCH more…

What about Eckhart Tolle? Any specifics on him?
He found himself after a transformative experience to be very much aligned with the Catholic mystic Meister Eckhart, and changed his name in honor of him. If you search for ET on here, you will find about 50 threads in which he is mentioned . About half look to be locked. After actually reading his works, as distinct from listening to circulated rumors ad avid condemnations, it is pretty clear to me that commentary about him on here is in most instances, to put it very mildly, prejudicial and ignorant of his intent.

I have read Tolle, and own the Books “A New Earth,” and the “Power of Now.” I’m not speaking from hearsay, but from what I have actually read. Tolle is a New Age Guru who is very far from Catholic teaching. FYI, in case anyone wanted to know regarding my post above.

Don’t keep us in suspense. If you are trying to make up Latin phrases, at least you could use real latin words and correct grammar. If you are trying to say, " keep floundering, " try again.

I’m sure you might have your own flounder at the end of your line. But it isn’t Latin, and only you have been curious. So OK.

It is a dead language. The phrase is used to indicate someone(s) who mistake their benefactors for daemons, usually based on appearances.

It was obvious that it wasn’t Latin, although it too is a dead language. Looks like it is derived from Latin, at least in part. Probably a local Scandinavian corruption. Anyway, it your want to " show off " a bit, that is fine. But use a language that people may have some aquaintance with. Latin would be O.K., Greek not so much. Perhaps old English, old French, old German.

No offense, Linus, but that’s showing off. A portion on here seem to have trouble even with English. Just as “you shall always have the poor among you,” there will also always be levels of understanding. That is evident here, too. No offense, jes sayin.

Didn’t mean to show off. Yes, we get all kinds.

I am currently readind The Powerof Now out of curiosity since he is now such a big name and the book a best seller. It looks to me like Buddhism or Vishishta Vedanta (qualified Nondualism). His definition of “mind” can in a way, be compared to all that we think of as who we are. His main point is that we are not that. We witness that. What we really are is something infinite, timeless, and eternal. If we can die to this mistaken identification with the mind we find a new birth.

Of course, I have not finished the book yet. But I hate the term “New Age” and would not use it to describe him. What he presents is a very old philosophy on contemporary terms. The theology is in the direction of heterodox mysticism.
