I need some help because I am shaken and upset. I came across another thread that gave some startling information about dogmas declared by Pope Pius IX that seem to be the complete opposite of the current ecumenical trends of the Church since Vatican II.
Here’s what I mean:
Pope Pius IX infallibly defined in his Syllabus of Errors that the following are errors…
III. INDIFFERENTISM, LATITUDINARIANISM
Instead of genuinely considering these questions, the poster was attacked with nothing but name calling and accusations of being a ultra conservative, JPII hater, etc, when I think these points deserved more careful thought. I always thought the “rad-trads” simply had a beef with the new Liturgy, but now I understand more of their concerns, although I think it’s wrong to separate from the Church. I’m not excusing their behavior in that department.
Is blind submission to Church leadership what we are called to in these situations? We are called to adhere to the doctrines and dogmas that have been defined. But what if new ones contradict the old ones?
If I am way off here, someone please gently let me know. I am devoted to the Catholic Church, so don’t anyone call me a schismatic or an extremist! I just came across these things yesterday and today. I want answers because I love my Church and the Truth she has taught from the beginning. I don’t want to be confused and scandalized! Help me out!

- Every man is free to embrace and profess that religion which, guided by the light of reason, he shall consider true. – Allocution “Maxima quidem,” June 9, 1862; Damnatio “Multiplices inter,” June 10, 1851.
- Man may, in the observance of any religion whatever, find the way of eternal salvation, and arrive at eternal salvation. – Encyclical “Qui pluribus,” Nov. 9, 1846.
- Good hope at least is to be entertained of the eternal salvation of all those who are not at all in the true Church of Christ. – Encyclical “Quanto conficiamur,” Aug. 10, 1863, etc.
- Protestantism is nothing more than another form of the same true Christian religion, in which form it is given to please God equally as in the Catholic Church. – Encyclical “Noscitis,” Dec. 8, 1849.
