Ed Dept. sez union backs perv teacher

The city’s teachers union is fighting “tooth and nail” to put a pervert teacher back in the classroom, the Department of Education charged yesterday.
“This action speaks a lot louder than the union’s hypocritical rhetoric,” the department said in a statement condemning the United Federation of Teachers for standing behind chemistry teacher Cary Hershkowitz.
The city has been trying to fire Hershkowitz ever since he admitted sending an E-mail in 1999 asking a student if she would “want to have sex; both with others and me.”
He has been suspended without pay from his job at Health Professions and Human Services High School for the last year.
But UFT Randi Weingarten said the union’s only role in the case was referring Hershkowitz to an attorney when the charges were originally filed.
“We have had no involvement since,” Weingarten said, noting that the union supports contract changes to terminate teachers who are proven guilty of sexual misconduct with students.
An arbitrator’s finding last summer that Hershkowitz should get his job back was tossed out by Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Rolando Acosta, who called the decision “totally irrational.”
But the disgraced teacher filed papers this week demanding both the gig and back pay. Acosta has ordered a new hearing on the department’s case to fire the pervert teacher.
