As a private citizen, no. As a Catholic university professor, yes.

For criticizing the bishops, no.

For lobbying for and supporting abortion and leglislation contrary to Church teaching, yes.

WelL Church teaching is one thing, political tactics other. The Church does shoot her own feet when puts abortion and contraception in the same plane and all abortions in the same plane as a political strategy. But the Church should teach, and I do not see changing her teaching on abortion. In the other hand it should recognize that in a secular world she must reach lesser evil compromises. Like tolerating contraception even it if not better for individual hollyness, or if a across the board abortion ban is imposible, legal abortion in some cases.
In the matter of tactics the author might have a point.
But some things are not that real.
  1. The point of countries with abortion ban having high numbers of abortion rates is based on the Lancet article that is PP propaganda.
  2. The idea that Roe vs Wade is going to be overruled soon is a bit optimistic.
  3. Grosere I’m catholic and a NARAL/PP cronie talk by Dem politicias should be punished.

Common ground, limited but important, can be found. There is plenty of evidence that provision of maternal and children health support, pregnancy counseling, adoption services, and teen education, as well as full employment and adequate provision of emergency assistance, can reduce the number of abortions.
Many prochoice politicians have supported such policies, many prolife politicians have opposed them, a difference evident recently in votes on federal child health legislation.
So one who has run on a “pro-life” platform and votes against these measures should be called an abortionist? Is this the message that I’m reading here? Hmmm.

Having said that, when I first saw the term “common ground” I would have expected that the Supreme Court would finally wise up and let the individual states decide the matter. Guess not.

This editorial by a professor of Catholic studies at Holy Cross criticizes the Church hierarchies position on abortion. . . .
I think there is some question as to how long Holy Cross will continue to be regarded as Catholic.

The Supreme Court puts abortion and contraception on the same plane:

The Connection between Contraception and Abortion
Planned Parenthood v. Casey, the recent Supreme Court decision that confirmed Roe v. Wade, stated, “in some critical respects abortion is of the same character as the decision to use contraception . . . . for two decades of economic and social developments, people have organized intimate relationships and made choices that define their views of themselves and their places in society, in reliance on the availability of abortion in the event that contraception should fail.”

The Church is right on the money. Contraception is intrinsically evil. The Church cannot change her teaching.

You’re right.

I heard a talk by James Dobson yesterday where he was asking who was going to step into the shoes of Graham, Falwell, and many others as they go to their reward and who will speak up against homosexual marriage, euthenasia, abortion, etc., etc.

There was not one mention of the evils of contraception.

Come to think of it, there was no mention of the Pope either.
