"The Edmonton Catholic school board took another step Tuesday toward a policy for transgender students, but critics blasted the proposal, arguing it does nothing to create safer spaces in schools for those youth.
“It’s been 11 months and we’re no further ahead,” said Marni Panas, a social advocate and transgender person who is a parent in the Catholic school district, after a special meeting of the board Tuesday night.
The one-page policy proposal is too vague to protect students whose rights are often ignored, Panas said. She also argued against a line in the proposed policy that states all members of the school community “have the right to an environment free of unjust discrimination, prejudice, and harassment.”
