There’s an article in the website, www.newoxfordreview.org about effemitate priests.
I think it is correct in pointing out that effeminate priests drive away men both from Mass and the priesthood.
We must support manly priests who by their vow of celibacy they are living up to the very essence of priesthood-Sacrifice!
I don’t thing celibacy is as big a sacrifice for effeminate or homosexual priests.
I was pleased to notice that the Usccb’s vocational video Fisher’s of Men which highlights the priesthood as something good only has maculine type priests.
We need to get away from telling effeminate boys that maybe they are called to the priesthood just because they are that way.
Instaed we should point out that the priesthood is about offering sacrifice- one of those is the renunciation of marriage/women. Its only a sacrifice if its offering up something precious to you.

Very true. Used to be that the priest was a hero-figure for young men. A masculine, but holy man.

Now we have all these sex abuse scandals. Sickening. But thank the liberal bishops for that one

Ok, I’m not sure I understand what you mean by “effeminate.”

Are you suggesting that the call to priesthood is certified by the *temptation to have sex/I}? The stronger the desire or sex drive, the more worthy the person is to be a priest???

As it is, the first post on this thread is a little too vague…what do you mean by “masculine?”*

I believe the poster is referring to the appearance and behaviour.

From Merriam-Webster online dictionary
Effeminate
1 : having feminine qualities untypical of a man : not manly in appearance or manner.

Masculine
  1. having qualities appropriate to or usually associated with a man

What I’m saying is a sex drive is not a call but also a lack of a sex drive is not a call to the priesthood.Im saying it shouldnt matter. But if one is a normal guy it would be a better sacrifice to commit to celibacy because it demands a greater self sacrifice and self discipline. Im also saying we need more MEN that as a guy i can relate to.

Another thing I think effeminate priests do, is relate better and encourage a feminine spirituality. It seems to be a relatively recent trend that religion is a “woman’s thing”. Don’t get me wrong, I think it is totally AWESOME that women are increasing their spirituality, etc. But a side effect of that (and having the effeminate priests) is that men are becoming lax in their spirituality. I think having more “masculine” priests would encourage men to take their spirituality more seriously.

My last two pastors were effeminate. One even made a joke to a group of us parishioners about what a “bitch” he could be when he’s in a bad mood (I think I had to pick my jaw up from the floor after that). I have only ever heard gay men talk that way. Anyway, both are good priests but I wouldn’t be surprised if they scared away some men.

Unofortunately today masculinity is associated most with a strong sex drive. Your promiscuity determines how much of a man you are.

:banghead: Now you’re grossing me out. If there was a puking smiley, I’d use it.

Actually, the trend seems to be more towards feminizing men and having superheroe women who beat the c*#p out of male bad guys. Blending the genders is in because it fits certain agendas.

Is the issue gay priests or is the issue effeminate mannerisms? Because not all gay men act in an effeminate manner. Unfortunately, gay priests is a very real issue in the Catholic priesthood. I am not sure why gay men are attracted to the priesthood but clearly that is the case for whatever reason. I have known priests who I thought were probably homosexual. But my understanding is that the Catholic Church does not condemn Same Sex Attraction but rather condemns acting on that tendency. So as long as a gay priest lives a holy, celibate life, we shouldn’t be concerned–even if he has effeminate mannerisms. And since I have no way (or interest) in knowing what his sins are, I have to accept that he is true to his vows and living a life of holiness.

Since priests, as fathers , are to represent to the best , the glory of the Father, as our Lord does, the struggles of any , to overcome the handicap of being effeminate, hopefully could help our whole culture !

The holiness, that spiritual glow that comes from a life of fasting and prayer , to include hours of Eucharistic Adoration, to fill the deep yearning of the human heart - a close father relationship , and devotion to our bl. Mother through the simple yet straight and narrow devotion to the rosary to destroy any envy complex of women, and other bondages …hours spent in the Scriptures - O.T. (wars and the incidents in the lives of real men ) as The Word , The Breath of The Spirit, cleanses and heals - all these, hopefully be of help!

Even the diet , to go along with a good fasting regime , that would kill off yeast and invigorate -with less meat , dairy and grains ( to reduce hormones, yeast …) and more legumes , for the protien, calcium, carb needs ( reputed as the Daniel diet and good for the environement as well !)

Would love to see such programs tried by those who whine about the inborn nature or helplessness of some of these situations !

Did you slap him?
:tsktsk: 😛

Actually, I think this is a very traditional view. Males, across time and cultures, are generally seen as self-seeking and driven by pleasure. Women, in contrast, are portrayed as self-sacrificing and angelic. Its a gender stereotype which is oddly pervasive.

My pastor is definitely very masculine. He loves sports (especially Notre Dame football, where he went to college), loves playing poker, and drives a convertible. He is just like every other guy, except he is single and chaste. My previous pastor was also very masculine, loved football and golf. I really have never known any priests who were not “men’s men”.

Well…for those who do not like football or golf and dislike poker,
the WAY to be Fatherly, like our Lord , who call the disciples ’ children’ is laid out well… 🙂

In our times ,with the sequelae of the two wars and many fatherless families , and its poisonous fruits, being a Father - with its dignity and caring , and in turn reaping rich fruit in the way of lives that turn around is still seen ! 🙂

[Hosea] {4:14} I will not send afflictions on your daughters, when they will commit fornication, nor on your spouses, when they will commit adultery, because you yourselves have associated with harlots and have offered sacrifice with the effeminate, and because the people who do not understand will be defeated. [Proverbs] {18:8} The words of the double-tongued seem simple. And they reach even to the interior of the gut. Fear casts down the lazy, but the souls of the effeminate shall go hungry.

While I agree that effeminate priests are a problem…men being afraid of effeminacy is also a problem. I may not like it, but if I believe Catholicism is the One True Faith I am going to patiently put up with the priest whether he be an alcoholic, queer, or heretic. I can pray for him and try to help or whatever. But if a man is so machoistic as to be “driven away” by effeminacy, so “scared” of feminine men (and what’s to be afraid of if they’re alledgedly weaker!?) that he leaves the Church…that’s really his problem and his fault.

Masculinity means integrating one’s male gender healthily and comfortably into one’s psyche. But as long as that is true, it can manifest itself in a million ways. In some cultures, the sports loving were considered “barbaric” and “animal” and the delicate artsy types (often because they were the upper class) “civilized” and “manly”.

Obviously, many of these effeminate priests HAVENT effectively integrated masculinity into their psyche or identity…but I think there is also a problem with these men who are being “driven away” being homophobic (to the point of leaving the true church!) and unflexibly integrating one (relatively recent) model of masculinity TOO deeply and TOO strongly into their psyche (ie, they’d rather stop being Catholic than stop being a man…which is a misordering of priorities)

No. It’s not. Through the lense of history given to us (often by people with an agenda) men seem to have acted that way throughout history…

But if you go back even 300 years you will see that women in the ancient world were considered the “fleshy” ones and man the “intellectual” ones. That women were considered sensuous temptresses and men were the ones who “masculinely resisted,” that women were black widows, not truly loving, just seeking a man who would protect her offspring and provide money to ensure their survival (even though she may have been actually impregnated by another man)

Niether view is right, but you are wrong in saying that men have always been seen as selfish and pleasure seeking and women as angelic.

Throughout history, some men AND women have been goodly and self-restrained and civilized…and some men AND women have been carnal, selfish, barbaric, and inconsiderate.

But the “official” view up until a few centuries ago (up until the beginning of the victorian “seperate spheres” view of women as morally superior) was that men were the morally superior, more selfless ones (they fought war for the state, not caring for their own lives, etc) and that women were weak, carnal theives and whores if not carefully watched and restrained by men. (of course, most people throughout history knew that such stereotypes were untrue, that there were good and evil men and women…how else would they romanticize either sex in falling in love?)

Manhood in general is under attack it affects every facet of our society. Just look at our sitcoms and commericals (bear with me here). What is the most common theme? Good looking smart wife, married to a worthless, dumb, inconsiderate, alcoholic, fat oaf of a husband. Every commerical has a man too dumb to change a tire and some powerful woman comes to his rescue. Or the wife “wears the pants” and the man is protrayed as nothing more than an additional child. I may seem a bit nuts, I probably am, but I’m not imagining this I see it everyday. The priesthood and feminization of the Church is just one facet of our Church being influenced by our society in its attack on masculinity.
