Minya, 24 June (AKI) - Hundreds of Muslim extremists surrounded a church in central Egypt and threatened to kill the local priest, the Assyrian International News Agency reported. The extremists began targeting the church in a village 7 kilometres south of the city of Minya in March after renovation work began, threatening to demolish the church.

AINA Friday cited eyewitnesses as saying that the Muslim mob, dressed in white robes and long beards, chanted: “We will kill the priest, we will kill him and no one will prevent us.”

One of their leaders was cited as saying they would “…cut him to pieces,” AINA reported.

The priest Father George Thabet, who was holding morning mass and was locked in the church with several parishioners. Security forces arrived five hours later and escorted the priest away in a police car to the Coptic Diocese in Minya.

Coptic youths who were attending mass remained inside St George’s church to defend it from Muslim attacks.

Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Matt 5:10
Lord, have mercy on those who persecute the Church. :signofcross:

Im not sure why this is so shocking. Nothing good comes from mohammedism. Nothing.

it is beyond infuriating that when a pastor of a Christian group of about 50 threatened to burn a koran the whole world took notice and reported on it extensively. yet here we have “hundreds” of muslims making death threats and for some odd reason not a peep in the mainstream news.

my prayers to the 10% Christian population trying to survive in that hostile environment. may God bless them and may St Michael defend them.

This sort of thing is becoming a “dog bites man” kind of story.

hi aelred. could you please elaborate? i can take that statement many ways and am not sure if any of them are what you mean.

thanks.
Ant-Christian violence is becoming so common in Arab Spring Egypt.

Yes, one flaky preacher threatening to burn a Koran gets viral media coverage. But a mob of Muslims threatening to kill a priest is not newsworthy.

Sorry, I just mean I’ve heard about so many of these incidents since the “Arab Spring” started, in which extremist Muslim mobs surround a church and threaten those inside, or actually destroy the church. It’s getting to be the situation one would expect in Egypt right now.

The fact that it is apparently a frequent occurrence doesn’t make any individual instance any less bad. If anything it makes it worse that it is not an isolated incident.

thanks. i thought that might be what you meant, but then i wasn’t sure because i hadn’t heard that expression before and have rarely read about stories where a dog actually bites someone. 😊 not too common in the city i guess.

it is horrible and seems to be occurring more and more. there is another area in the middle east where Christians are being driven out and killed… (i forget the name at this moment). a nun wrote a letter asking for our prayers. anyway that was a topic for another thread so i guess i shouldn’t bring it up just please keep praying for the persecuted everywhere.

Dogs biting people isn’t often reported on because it is so common. The expression is used for stories that describe something so common that a new incident of it really isn’t news (from a cynical newsroom perspective, anyway), though it’s obviously still just as big a deal for the people involved.

Yes because Christianity has NO blood its hands. None. Our religion was spread over bread and tea parties.

Awful story by the way. 😦

i just learned a new expression. thanks. 🙂 still seems odd to me though having been around thousands of dogs and rarely hear about anyone getting bit. guess i grew up in a well-behaved doggie bubble. 😃

It only took the authorities 5 hours to come to the rescue and save the mob from that priest.

Any story that gives people the opportunity to complain about the evil “Mohammedans” (since many posters seem to think they have a collective consciousness, perhaps we should refer to them by metonymy as “the eternal Mohammedan.” An esoteric reference?) is a good story, or so it seems.
