So may i use a little science to make your mind think? You know, science, I’m sure you Atheists know all about it. Hmm… greatest genius known to man; Albert Einstein. He said something that has baffled me to this day so i might share it with you. “The law of conservation of energy states that energy may neither be created nor destroyed”
Therefore, Einstein stated “There truly has to be an afterlife, considering we are energy that cannot be completely destroyed”

Why doesn’t this apoliogist cheap trick actually work you may wonder?
One reason occurs to me, and it is that it is a cheap tawdry carnival sales tactic.

I’m not an athiest, but I am an engineer. The main problem with that statement is that your body loses no energy by dying. If you were burned alive or right after death you’d give off the same amount of heat and light and burn for the same amount of time. Naturally your body only loses energy by decomposing.

Unfortunately there is no physical science that can measue a soul or what it means to be alive.

Only belief. You are correct.

Do you have a source for your Einstein quote? TIA

Well, if you Google the quote you just get the one hit. And it’s the one by the OP.

I think he’s confusing the Third Law of Thermodynamics with Heaven.

I would like to see a cite for the quote too. Here are some cited Einstein quotes:

“Neither can I believe that the individual survives the death of his body, although feeble souls harbor such thoughts through fear or ridiculous egotism.”

”I do not believe in immortality of the individual, and I consider ethics to be an exclusively human concern with no superhuman authority behind it.”

”The mystical trend of our time, which shows itself particularly in the rampant growth of the so-called Theosophy and Spiritualism, is for me no more than a symptom of weakness and confusion. Since our inner experiences consist of reproductions, and combinations of sensory impressions, the concept of a soul without a body seem to me to be empty and devoid of meaning.”

I think it means that “after life” would be in another natural form, not a supernatural one.

Just like to survive you take the energy from other forms of life, when we die, other forms of life take our energy.

Our energy remains in other forms but we cease to exist as a whole and a conscience.

I’m Catholic and yet I agree that the above mentioned quote is unconvincing…

What is left out is that energy may not be destroyed, but it can be converted into something else and that something else might be quite different from the “source”.
The “afterlife” of the human body could easily be “compost”…
…"When I die don’t bury me
in a box in a cemetery
Out it the garden would be much better
Then I could be pushin’ up home grown tomaters,
😃

The idea of the quote of course is that it is attributed to the very brilliant Albert Einstein who did believe in God.
So - when some atheist put forth some argument that tries to equate belief in God with lower intelligence or education then pointing to someone like Einstein is a good counter…
But in this case…Sorry - but the “quote” (true or not) is just not convincing…

James

What makes him a genius in Catholic eyes?
I think his seminal papers in 1905 would make him considered a genius in anyone’s eye, regardless of their faith. However, given his numerous anti-religious comments throughout his life, I can see why some might doubt his true genius.
Personally, I do not believe that Einstein was as smart as people make him out to be.

Assuming you agree with this text, your argument, while using a scientific principle, actually defeats any need for God insofar as you present it as a metaphysical statement.

Firstly, the principle that energy cannot be created or destroyed is simply a recognition that nothing “physical” can create or destroy energy since all causal relations in a physical context are in principle an expression of energy in some form or another. Energy is converted.

Secondly; that nothing physical can create or destroy energy, has no relevance to whether or not energy can be destroyed. The principle itself is not evidence of the idea that absolutely nothing can destroy energy; since the principle is only a fact relative to the nature and powers of “physical things”, not all possible things that might exist. It is not a metaphysical proof.

Thirdly, if it were true that the principle excluded all possible causes, then there would be by necessity an infinite regress of physical states that do not begin to exist, since energy cannot be destroyed or created. Which would mean that God is not the creator. Also, while energy would always exist, it does not mean that “you” would always exists, which clearly contradicts what Einstein is promoting.

Personally, I do not believe that Einstein was as smart as people make him out to be.
I tend to find that when some one excels at something but is deficient and many other skills he or she may be called “smart” based only one the strong skill without consideration for the others. I’m not saying that Einstein isn’t smart. In all honesty I have never had a motivation for trying to evaluate him on this. But I think that tendency may in one way or another come into play here.

If all of the purported Einstein quotes swirling around on these forums are accurate, then clearly Einstein was very confused in the areas of philosophy and spirituality, he frequently contradicted himself, and his opinions on the matter of theology or atheism are irrelevant.

Another aspect of pulling quotes for people - just in general - is that no allowance is generally made for time frame…After all we are allowed to change our minds…thus a quote from age 20 might contradict a quote from age 40…🤷

A humorous example of this principle is the fact that Ebeneezer Scrooge never gets any credit for changing. 😃

That’s an excellent point James. Perhaps there is a list somewhere of all of Einstein’s quotes in chronological order?
