The pope is flying to Mexico today and on Monday he leaves for Cuba. On Tuesday he will visit the Marian shrine of El Cobre.

In 1612, a small statue of Mary was found floating on the sea by two Indians and a black slave who went to fetch salt in the Bay of Nipe. The image was later brought to the village of El Cobre, near Santiago, from there the devotion spread rapidly throughout the island.

This year, the church in Cuba celebrates the 400th anniversary of the finding of the statue. Pope Benedict XVI is honoring this occasion by visiting the country and El Cobre.

We compiled an 11 minute film about the shrine which we want to share with you:

Hi BenediktCRTN,

Thanks for sharing this with us, it’s great to see the following for Mary, and I pray that the Pope’s visit will be a great success,

God bless

The Cuban American Community in South Florida
has a large Shrine to La Virgen de Caridad del Cobre,
La Ermita de Caridad, on the grounds of, or rather right next door to,
the main building of Miami’s MERCY HOSPITAL.
It is a lovely shrine, with an exact replica of the statue high above the altar,
and large murals of Cuban social and religious heroes (including
St. Anthony Mary Claret).
