Boy Is Charged With Crime, Woman Is Not

CHICAGO (CBS) ―
A shooting on the city’s Southeast Side has people telling two entirely different stories.

Neighbors said an elderly woman was fed up with constant harassment from a 12-year-old boy, so she took a gun and shot the child after he and his friends threw bricks into her home.

Now, the boy is charged with a crime, while the 68-year-old woman is not.

The boy who was shot, along with another boy, 13, are cited in juvenile delinquency petitions with one count each of misdemeanor aggravated assault to a senior citizen, according to police.

The woman, identified by neighbors as Margaret Matthews, was released from police custody without being charged, on the grounds that she acted in self defense, police said.

The boy who was shot was out of the hospital as of Wednesday morning, and was released to his parents, police said.

The shooting happened near 76th Street and Coles Avenue. Afterward, neighbors said Matthews was distraught because of everything that led up to the trigger-pull.

"She was very emotional; she was an emotional wreck,’’ said a neighbor, Troila McCoy.

Neighbors said the boy was the ringleader of a group of kids, and had been holding his own little reign of terror on the block – especially targeting Matthews.

“I call him the little bad boy,” said another neighbor, Hilda Brunt.

McCoy said the boy had been breaking windows, breaking items on Matthews’ shed house, and setting her garbage on fire.

“I would say they were bullying her,” added neighbor Frenchie Johnson. “She was an older lady. She stayed there by herself. They know that. And she’s one of the ladies that, she stands up for herself.”

Asked if he supported Matthews’ actions, Johnson emphatically said, “Yes.”

Damage from the alleged vandalism was apparent in the form of a boarded-up window at the home of the woman.

Neighbors say when the boy threw the bricks and broke Matthews’ windows, she simply hit the breaking point.

She called police and they came, but after officers left, the boy came back. That was when Matthews responded with gunfire.

But the boy’s own family has a completely different story.

“He and his friend were walking down the street, and they saw a window broken at a woman’s house, and as they passed by, they said she came out shooting,” said the boy’s grandmother, Donna Virges.

Still, the incident struck a nerve with some, as a desk officer at the South Chicago police district where the shooting happened said at about 11 p.m. Tuesday, he fielded a call from a concerned citizen who does not know Matthews.

The woman caller wanted to let police know that if needed, she would raise bail money for the woman involved because she “should not go to jail,” the officer said.

The caller explained she had also been “terrorized” in a similar way, she “knows what she feels like,” and the woman “did the right thing,” according to the officer.

WBBM Newsradio 780 reports neighbors say Matthews is a widow, works two jobs and lived in the same home for nearly 30 years. Neighbors know her as “Miss Margaret,” WBBM’s Lisa Fielding reports.

The boy’s charges could land him in juvenile detention for up to a year.

Sounds like the boy’s grandma is delusional. Why on earth would he just be, at 12 y/o, out at 11pm walking around with a friend. Sorry. This kid is not being parented. How sad for him. He nearly lost his life, because his family doesn’t see fit to keep his butt home!

ETA: Wait, the 11pm was the phone call to bail her out. I read too fast! Still, I have a feeling this little kid is a punk. Very sad…

Now, wouldn’t our entire society be better off if the woman just sicced her dog on the youths?

Would you say the same if the kid in question had died?
I would not have worded it that way. But I can only imagine how terrifying it would be for an old woman to be sitting at home alone and have bricks come flying through her window.

If the kid died, sorry, but someone needs to take a good long look at whose raising him and possibly lay the blame there.

And if the woman had been hit by a brick and died? What would people say then?
California bishops said yesterday that we should not impose the death penalty on a convicted felon.

Now, why would folks think the death penalty is appropriate for a 12 year-old throwing a brick?

What this country needs to do is ban bricks; we need to find out how that deadly brick got into the hands of these children.

Next we need to sue the brick manufactures; we need to shut down these brick dealers.

And what about the brick show loop hole.

Sick and tired of these bricks out there injuring people; bricks are evil.

Hum? Now where have I heard this stuff before? :hmmm:

I really doubt he was being raised at all, that’s the problem there. He probably had no positive role models in his life and he was emulating what he saw around him and spent most of his time on the street. I really don’t know many 12 year olds allowed out on the street at 11:00 at night.

I would! The lady was subjected to continuous harrassment with no interference on the part of that boy’s parents. The kid took it to the next level when he committed arson and started tossing bricks through her window. Maybe now he’ll think twice before victimizing little old ladies.

Shooting a 12 year old? That’s too much, and the woman should be charged with a crime as well.

The problem with trouble-makers is psychological. They need patient counseling and teaching. They don’t need to be killed. If we went around killing every trouble-maker, then we’d all be idiots.

Pretty sure God didn’t tell us to go around shooting people because they harass us.

What a beastly thing to say.

The woman was being terrorized by a group of males who were certainly physically capable of doing grave violence to her. Good for her. I hope she continues to shoot straight.

The real shame is that our social morality is so upside down that this old lady had to defend herself, rather than being able to rely on a local man to defend her. Shame on all the men of that community for letting an old lady get victimized by punks.

no because if the dog bit the boy, the boy’s parents would sue the woman and the animal control would have the dog put down.

HOOAH! 👍

Even if the woman was being terrorized by this boy, shooting him was wrong. If the boy had died, most DAs would have charged her with a crime, perhaps downgrading it to manslaughter. Being fed up, even afraid, is no justification to shoot someone with a gun, no matter how much sympathy you have with the woman’s plight. I don’t justify the boy’s actions, or the excuses of his family, but I also can’t justify the woman’s overreaction to a terrible situation.

Being afraid for your safety, imho, gives you every justification to pull the trigger. And the provocation absolutely mitigates at least some responsibility.

I live in the UK, where air rifles are considered deadly weapons, and strictly controlled by the police. But I believe responsible gun ownership should be allowed.

If some gang of yobs was throwing bricks at my house, with my parents inside (neither of whom are spring chickens), and one of my parents for whatever reason had a firearm, and shot it at the vandals/intruders, then I’d say good for them.

What was this old woman supposed to do? Call out the window through the hole the brick made and ask the attacker’s age? Threaten to call the police who had come and gone?

They stole from her
They bricked her windows
They set alight her garbage

What’s to say the next brick wouldn’t be followed by a flaming garbage bag?

No. She chose right and that little brat should thank God he’s still alive. A brick is a weapon too. The aggressor should not be let off just because he has a poorer quality weapon and poorer aim than his victim.

What could those men do? Yell at the kids? I doubt those kids would care if someone yelled at them. Loud voices don’t hurt.

Hit the kids? The men would go to jail for that. And they would be listed as child abusers as well.

You’re right, things are upside down. But I wouldn’t blame those men who couldn’t do anything. I blame these new laws that don’t distinguish between abuse and discipline.

When I was 12, I was still playing with dolls.
Hotwheels with my brother.

In bed at 9 pm each night too.

I never got shot.

God Bless.

I don’t usually agree with Stan on anything (unless its Star Trek related) but in this instance I think he’s right. I know this area of Chicago, I used to live not too far from it and its madness. Every block has their own tyrant or group of tyrants. These are neighborhoods full of retired people scared to walk to the mailbox or the store virtually imprisoned in their own houses. Even when I was living there as a little kid in the 80’s there were places I wasn’t allowed to go. There was a huge park not 2 blocks from my house that was completely off limits because of gangs and I can only imagine what its descended into now…

Is this the kind of world I’m happy to live in where the options are getting so few that all an old lady can do (rather than rely on a neighborhood watch or gasp the police) is aim a gun? No. But sometimes when a rapier doesn’t work, you have to use a cudgel.
