Melterboy2. This thread is not about “the life of John Lewis”.

As @TepeyacTraveler stated . . .
Discussions kinda get weird when one side is indefensible, but is still argued.

Over and over again we see the goalposts moving. The only question is when will it happen next time.
Why not just state the obvious?

Why not just say this was wrong (or it was right, and it is OK for everyone else too)?

.
Why is the word “elite” always used in association with Dems, not Reps?
Because so much of the mainstream media shows their bias when they report on this.

They might as well call themselves “mediaDNC”.

Contrast that to VP Mike Pence not “masking up” at Mayo and being publicly excoriated for days and you begin to get an idea of “why”.

Wait until the Trump rallys get started in earnest.
We are going to hear nightly about what “killers” they are.

But I am not going to accept that line. Covfefe.

No Melterboy2. The national leftists and their buddies are “elite” all right.

Obama’s So-Called Eulogy For John Lewis Was A Disgraceful Political Display

In a moment that required unity and celebration, Barack Obama chose cynical political rancor.

By David Marcus

AUGUST 3, 2020

Barack Obama . . . is the only president in modern memory to have ascended to the national spotlight on the power of a single speech, with his eloquent words at the 2004 Democratic Party Convention. His soaring rhetoric then and four years later on the campaign trail sought to bring Americans together. That is why the base and political nature of his eulogy for the late John Lewis is such a disappointment. . . .

. . . the former president veered into a rambling litany of radical current political demands that sounded more like a convention speech than a eulogy.

After slamming Republicans for very reasonable fears that an untried nationwide mail-in voting system could be a total mess rife with the opportunity for corruption, Obama acknowledged he was drifting into controversial territory. He said, “I know this is a celebration of John’s life. There are those who might say we shouldn’t dwell on such things. . . .

. . . This is why the laundry list of Democrat talking points Obama proceeded to launch was so misplaced and such a disgraceful use of time that should have been spent uniting Americans through the memory of one of its great leaders. Instead, Obama made it seem that if anyone should disagree with his preferred policy decisions, that person was not honoring Lewis’s legacy. At times, it became downright ridiculous.

His insistence that all good people must support statehood for Washington, DC and Puerto Rico was downright cynical. It is perfectly clear that such a move would benefit his party in ways that could lead to unshakable one-party rule. But far more cynical were the means he described to achieve this end. . . .

. . . Eulogies don’t typically come with threats of extortion, but that is exactly what Obama took this hallowed time to deliver. He said, “And if all this takes eliminating the filibuster, another Jim Crow relic, in order to secure the God-given rights of every American, then that is what we should do.” In other words, should Republicans fail to bend the knee, the rules will be changed to permanently keep them in a political wilderness.

What is laughable is that Obama and the Democrats seem to have no problem using this “Jim Crow relic.” . . .

. . . Just as the ban on large indoor gatherings did not apply to Democrats holding a funeral, even while millions of Americans must say goodbye to loved ones without this most human of rituals, Democrats use the filibuster willy nilly with nary a care about its supposed racist provenance. As ever, there are two sets of rules. Is that not exactly what Lewis spent his life fighting against?

Obama’s eulogy was an opportunity lost for the country to come together. Instead, it was pure partisan rancor. . .

. . . Obama . . . turned a moment of civic reflection into a campaign rally. . . .

However, in John Lewis’ own words and deeds, getting into “good trouble” is a virtue. I think John Lewis would be proud that Obama was speaking out in the way he did. Lewis himself was all in favor of pushing the envelope in word and deed rather than accepting the status quo. And, in this case, it is not merely the status quo that Obama refused to accept, but an attempt to push voting rights for all Americans to the back of the bus. There is nothing cynical in what Obama said. On the contrary, he spoke the truth of what Trump and his allies are trying to do.

That was Obama;s and I see your opinion … you dont have proof of “what Trump and his allies are trying to do.” … that is just a talking point … this racist card that is played every election season …

Trying to take away your vote, the Republican party is racist, bigoted, and mysoginst …

We got it … The Democrats tell African American …

Dont know who to vote for If you dont for for Biden - you aint black …

They gonna put ya’ll back in chains …

I don’t feel no ways tired. I come too far from where I started from. Nobody told me that the road would be easy. I don’t believe He brought me this far

Even Obama could speak to African American audiences Nah, we straight.

Requiring voter IDs is not really a form of voter suppression and for any person ignorant enough to believe that presenting an ID could help them in an election is stupid. If presenting an ID every two years during election season is a hardship on minorities and or poor people - that is merely a a symptom of a larger issue for those communities that needs to be addressed for their every day benefit - not just one day every two years.

You need a government issued ID to open a bank account - direct deposit of social service benefits is far safer for people then receiving paper checks and falling pray to payday lenders and check cashing vendors. Benefits like Social Security, SSDI, Snap, Unemployment, Earned Income Credit etc.

You need an ID to rent a hotel room, get on a plan even buy cigarettes and liquor. Yu need to show ID when you obtain a job.

And in truth it is racist for people to cast an entire community as unable to obtain and maintain a form of government ID and that they are incapable of functioning as full fledged citizens of this country. Uncle Sam’s Plantation …Government will provide all their needs, and tell them what they need, promise them lifetime care - all for their every vote - even fill out their ballots for them, drive them to the polls or at least deliver their ballots to the polling place for them - trust us they say not those racists over there - dont worry about it … the Democrats have your back!

Juxtaposing America and Europe to show how everything in America is political, even public health.
In Europe:

“John loved the people of Derry and Donegal,” [his family] said.

"We know he would have prioritised public health and the safety and health of our communities. We’re asking people to follow that guidance, please do not put yourself or others at risk.

“Instead we would ask that people light a candle for peace at 9pm in their homes or at their door.”
The point here (because some need the obvious stated) is health guidelines must adhered by all. Or maybe all funerals should have certain relaxations in guidelines or trade-offs (all attendees must self-isolate under police watch).

At least they were wearing masks, but, yes, they should also have practiced social distancing.
How many were there?
The church I attend is still not allowed by state mandate to have more then 25 people in the church.
My family cannot even sit together because social distance mandates require every other pew closed.
, is this all Reps got from the funeral service and the life of John Lewis that they are focusing only on this aspect?
Yes. It is.
The laws they push on us are completely ignored for the sake of a few political speeches.

There is no other message here than one of a demonstration of lawlessness.

You want to honor someone… follow the rules you establish for everyone else.

Might want to mention that to Obama. He made his entire eulogy a political bash fest against Trump
Some comment about glass houses and stones might be appropriate at this point. Remember the 4th of July? Remember the visit by the Boy Scouts? Remember just about every non-political event at which Trump took the opportunity to bash Democrats?

Wow that’s a stretch…a funeral where a eulogy turns into a political bashing event is hardly the same as a Fourth of July event, where the sittingbPOTUS talks about the state of out Nation…nice try though 😌

George W. Bush was there and spoke.

Is he a dem or an elite?

Wow, that’s a stretch…a 4th of July where a celebration of national unity turns into a political bashing event against half the nation is hardly the same as a funeral of a very political leader…nice try though😌

Remember the visit by the Boy Scouts?
I remember.

And he went out and bought a big yacht, and he had a very interesting life. I won’t go any more than that, because you’re Boy Scouts so I’m not going to tell you what he did.
(CROWD CHANTING)
Should I tell you? Should I tell you?
(APPLAUSE)
You’re Boy Scouts, but you know life. You know life.“

Boys were 12 to 18.

Lots of deflections. Bottom line is that the defenders of this funeral approve of one set of rules for political elites and another set for everyone else. Seems to be a continuing theme.

Gotta stop deflecting from the LACK of social distancing INSIDE the church.

There are people the attendees are connected to who have been diagnosed with Covid-19.

So either … it’s still the most dangerous thing out there and they’re flouting the regulations and they should not have done that.

Or … it’s not the bogeyman it’s been made out to be.

Cannot have it both ways. Which is it?

Methinks the defenders of the attendees’ conduct know the answer to that and are refusing to admit how they’ve been made to look so bad here.

At a time when the majority of churches in the US are either not allowed to have indoor services at all or their attendance is strictly limited to some arbitrarily determined low number regardless of the size of the church.

But some want to pretend to see nothing there. Hypocrites the entire lot of them.

It’s ok to come out of the closet and admit this is a bad look.

This cannot be said enough…It’s a political season soooooo…

Melterboy2 on Obama politicizing (naturally) the late John Lewis’ funeral . . .
There is nothing cynical in what Obama said.
I disagree.

Meanwhile the leftists were ignoring social distancing instructions for themselves.

Lwftists here were clesrly not social distancing.

Anybody can just plain see that.

I asked is this a life-and-death matter or isn’t it??

Nepperhan’s (who so far has no admitted the obvious fact that the leftists here are flouting the rules of social distancing) response?
Sometimes some issues should not be raised.
To the readers here:
There ya have it. (The big defense for WHY it is OK for Democrats to ignore social distancing, but not other groups of people). (“Sometimes some issues should not be raised.”)

Nepperhan. I am going to remember and use this “response” of your’s too.

Covfefe.

What this pandemic has exposed through out the world is that policy on the run has its downfalls. In stark contradiction & open for all to see, is the true nature of our divisions, rules for some but not for all.

We don’t have to agree, we don’t even have to like it, but the truth is society places different weights dependent on stature. If we accept the notion that everybody has a different level of importance then the quicker we may find better ways to change.

It is not a matter of left or right, it is a matter of varying importance & the belief that a doctor is more important than a janitor. It is true that society structures itself on the different classes, at least that is what’s becoming more evident.
