Don’t worry about it, seriously. The more you worry, the more you think about such things. The fact of the matter is, you hate the thoughts, and these sexual and other thoughts are not thoughts you entertain. These happen to everyone, even though the type of thoughts maybe different.

So everytime such a thought comes into your head, just push it away, don’t entertain it, they will eventually leave you.

I also recommend doing some prayers to St. Michael to guard you against such thoughts.

God Bless

Wow - I haven’t been able to log on for a couple of days and I can’t believe all the responses! I wish I had time right now to respond to each of you. Thank you to all of you who are praying for me. Since I opened this thread I have been on an emotional roller coaster. I think people were starting to wonder what was wrong with me because for two whole days, even though the feelings didn’t totally subside, I could not stop smiling!!! 🙂 From the minute I read the link from Joysong (about the writings of St. John of the Crosses), I FELT Satan lose control. It was the weirdest feeling I have ever had. It still brings me to tears just thinking about it. I was so gripped by this bondage that sometimes it would take me a half hour to get through a particular passage of scripture because I was determined to say each line without having the feelings of arousal that were attacking me. But I DID NOT GIVE UP. I was literally at a point of desperation. It is not like me to talk about things like this with others, and had I not stumbled upon this forum a year ago I don’t know where I would be today. It took all the courage I could muster to admit this was happening to me, and all I can do is continue to ask for your prayers and I will pray for all of you as well. Dusan, when I read your post about how you have been helped as well, I cried and I am PRAISING GOD with you!!! It amazes me how connected we all are in the spiritual world, and what a powerful force we can be when we join together in prayer concern for each other. I wish I knew all of you in person.

I’m confused–are you having lustful thoughts while you are praying?

Or are you experiencing physical arousal while you are praying even though your thoughts are focused on prayer?
I am experiencing the latter (and it still makes me cringe to type it!), not only when I pray, but when I read scripture or meditate on practically anything spiritual as well. At times it is worse than others, sometimes it comes like an automatic gun firing constantly at me with nowhere to go to get away from it.

317, that’s wonderful news!!! I totally agree with you about the power of prayer. 😃

Don’t be dismayed if the devil tries again — JUST DON’T GIVE UP. You are a beloved child of God and He will help you.

God bless! :hug1:

It’s not thoughts anymore. I was ablr to ward off the impure thoughts. It’s the sensual feelings I get. I know this sounds terrible, but I am not some “sicko.” I pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet every year. My priest speaks “choppy” english, and told me he doesn’t fully understand what I’m trying to say. I am struggling because I don’t understand why, after so long, would God allow me to go through this when it appers so blasphemous to me! I understand the concept of an unwanted thought, and being able to immediately dismiss it, but I can’t do that with these biological responses. It is awfulo. I go to confession often, but I have such respect for Holy Communion that I have not taken it since last Easter because I don’t see how I can possible be in a state of grace with these impure reactions. Am I making any sense?
Dear 317 -
You are making sense - absolutely. Particularly to those who experience the same struggles. I know. I do, too. And we’re not “sickos” - you need not worry or defend. We are intelligent people who are not deluding ourselves but rather are plagued by something most abhorrent to our mind and soul - not only because of the disreverence we fear towards God - but because it is not in our daily nature to think or feel this way. It’s almost a rebellion of ourselves - against ourselves, as we would not dream of insulting God.

You have received some very good answers, and I haven’t finished reading all. But I will say, from experience, that priests - whether they speak garbled or not - understand. I know one of my confessors, one day, gave me advice (after hearing the repeated problem) - telling me the devil was having a field day with me (not his exact words but I knew he picked up on what I already knew). Because the evil delights not only in doing this to us - but in driving us further into fear.

When plagued by thoughts some suggestions - Say:
"The Name of Jesus be Praised! or
"Blessed be the Name of Jesus"

or St. Anthony’s Exorcism Prayer:
"Behold the Cross of the Lord. Begone, ye enemy powers! The Lion of the Tribe of Juda, the Root of David has conquered. Alleluia. Alleluia."

Always keep Holy Water around - sprinkle it around your house and Cross yourself. And perservere. God sees your trials and fears - and He is with you.

Oooo, I went through that too with the Eucharist! Every time I went to receive, the most blasphemous thoughts would come out of nowhere. I struggled with this for a long time, and occasionally still do. But that did not stop me from receiving the Eucharist, because that is exactly what the evil one wants! I knew where it was coming from. I pray to St. Michael now to help me with this when it occurs. This is another reason why I know that the Eucharist is real–Satan would not bother with something that wasn’t true.

To the OP–do not stay away from the Eucharist, because that is exactly what Satan is trying to get you to do. Do not listen to his lies. If your priest cannot understand what you are trying to tell him, find another one. Are there any monastaries near you where you can go for Confession, like the Franciscans?
Absolutely…the devil is the king of lies and he wants us to believe that our sins are so great that even God’s mercy can’t help us. He’s full of horse puckey. 😛

I had somewhat similar experiences in adolescence as my spiritual life took off and my suggestion might seem unorthodox but it worked for me. Simply try to ignore these thoughts and try to make them not a big deal. (Yes, it is harder than it sounds)

Blasphemy is a big deal, but the only effect of involuntary blasphemous thoughts is to disrupt your relationship with God and that is what you must prevent at all costs.

I am not in a position to tell you whether is the source is spiritual or psychological, but once their effect is frustrated, they fade; at least that was my experience. As long as they continue to distress you and produce guilt, they will be harder to overcome.

It’s like standing up at last to a bully. Once you lose the fear, he loses his power. This may sound very simplistic, but give it a try…God bless.

I am desperatley hoping someone out there can help me.
This is extrememly hard for me-I have never told anyone of this except my priest.
I am a very devout Catholic as of the last year. Prior to that (and to this day,) I have been soul-searching in an effort to grow closer to God. I have a huge problem. From the very beginning of my efforts to grow spiritually, I have been plagued with struggles. At first it began with terrible, blasphemous thoughts about Mary whenever I would say the rosary. I did not give up, and they eventually left. Then these thoughts plagued me whenever I thought about God or Jesus. Some of these thoughts were sexual in nature. I was absolutely appalled by them and abhorred them and prayed, prayed, prayed until I was eventually able to ward them off by the grace of God. These thoughts have turned into involuntary “feelings” - the same feelings I get when I am aroused by my husband. Please understand - I have no idea how these started or how they have escalated into this huge problem, but I have been plagued by them for a couple years now. I am in anguish. I have them when I try to pray, when I read a scripture, when I hear the word God, Jesus, etc. When I have them, I IMMEDIATELY say “Please forgive me, I condemn those feelings.” I have tried reciting scripture when they happen, I have prayed each and every time, I have plead with our Father to relieve me of this and it won’t go away. I have no desire WHATSOEVER to entertain these feelings with any further thought, and I know God knows I hate them. I am in tears most every day. I am desperate - they are literally ruining my life. If anyone out there can help me, PLEASE respond.
In contemplation we are taught to label these thoughts and pass them by.
They are disturbing, yes…but you need not dwell on them nor allow them take away your peace.

It is a spiritual practice to “quiet the senses”.

Understand that the thoughts are ridiculous by their very impossibility. Profane, ridiculous and impossible thoughts will parade in your mind, the more you try to move along on the road to contemplation.
Place yourself as an “uninterested by-stander” and continue to pray. Not entertaining the thoughts will suffice. Re-focus - not on any particular image, because images are inaccurate anyway…instead, re-focus on God’s Presence. Become aware of your willingness to “open up to Him”.

Let the images fall like dry leaves and blown away by the wind as they land on the ground.

Pax Domini sit semper vobiscum.

Please remember that you are not guilty of impure thoughts and/or feelings if you have not consented to them, and do not want them. Find a confessor who can advise you about this.

Even St. John of the Cross talks about people who are plagued by such thoughts/feelings, and he explains that they are not guilty if they do not consent. St. John says that sometimes the devil uses this tactic to get people to stop praying.

Find a confessor or spiritual director who will listen to you, understand, and advise you.

My dear sister in faith, I know exactly what you are going through. I had that experience for seven years and I wondered how could I be like this. I felt as though satan had taken possession of my mind and body, but being a devout catholic like yourself, I would not and did not give up. I was constantly asking Jesus why are you letting this happen to me? Just a few months ago, I ask my neurologist about the medication that I had been taking for the same length of time as my hideous experiences, thoughts, desires and feelings. The doctor and his nurse told me emphatically, yes, the medication does have that effect on some patients. It was at a point where I asked Jesus to take my life so I would not submit to the thoughts and urges, and so that I would not submit and offend Jesus. I have, by His grace, been able to restrain myself by keeping myself busy working on different projects around the house, and when I am praying, (for hours), it seems to vanish for those times. I have a shrine in my garage, and it looks like a confessional, adorned with statues, holy candles, religious pictures of about every kind, and things too numerous to mention.I believe being there and looking at all those things helps me significantly. There I have peace. Do you take any prescription medication of any kind? Your situation is so much like mine, that I would have thought I wrote what you wrote. Have you seen a doctor, especially a neurologist to see if you may have a chemical imbalance or something that is creating this disastrous situation for you. I don’t believe it is satan directly, but he would take advantage of such a condition to try and destroy you. There are many medications on the market that produce these side effects, and sometimes it may be one drug triggering another to bring about these negative results.I talked to my priest about my situation and he told me it was not my fault if I had to take something for a medical problem, but caused something abnormal with which I wanted no part of, and there are no alternatives. Believe me, Jesus understands your situation, and he will not judge you for something you do not want to be a part of. Try to make a condition of relaxation and stimulating for your brain, so that you may digress from what you are experiencing. We can fool our brains by doing something other than what the brain anticipates. Try to come up with different scenarios in your daily life. Tax your brain to find out when these things start, if there is something that may be stimulating you, food, drinks, movies, candy and so many other things that can bring about a behavioral change. Even odors, friends and things that are a part of your daily life could be triggering your mind to think other than the way it should. If this persists, seek medical help. You are a good person, and dwell on that. It could be something so simple, that it may cause you to laugh when you find out what it is. My Mirapex pill is so small, but it knocks me for a loop by the side effects it initiates in me. Now that I know the cause, I am more able to cope with the conditions. What haunted me, is I thought it was me, but it isn’t, and that gives me much comfort. It took me seven years to find out, but it was well worth it, and I believe you will accomplish the same goal, victory over you nemesis.
I would appreciate it, if you could just give me your name, nickname or something by which I can address you in my prayers for you.I don’t want your last name or anything revealing. I don’t want you to disclose something that might reveal your identity. Just make up a code word or nickname that no one will know about, so I can insert it with my prayers for you. If you know how to pray The Devine Mercy prayer, pray it at 3:00PM and pray for your intention. It is a very strong prayer. I just prayed for a man in the United Kingdom, whose wife has cancer and all the things were depressing. He did not respond immediately, being 4:00AM California time, and about 1:00 their time. Apparently they went to the doctors and received good news that some drugs may help heal his wife of cancer. He gave me his wife’s first and middle name, so I prayed on it immediately.
I will pray for you as 317, because if it is difficult for you to reveal something, Jesus will know and that should be sufficient. I studied psychology in college, and it helps me to analyze people pretty well, but by way of a computer I can’t see how you walk, talk, re-act and other factors that are indicative of you personality.
Don’t give up, because as I scan this website, I see others praying for you, and with a multitude of prayers you will see the light at the end of the tunnel, and that light will be Jesus.
God bless and sustain you,
Dusan, (Duke)

Dusan,
I appreciate your concern and willingness to pray for me. Sorry for the delay in responding - I am very busy and only have a small window of time I can log on without disruptions. The only perscription medicine I take is a beta-blocker, but I experienced this problem before I began taking it. 317 is a significant and special number for me, so I feel it would be a good code name for me in your prayers. I am praying for you and everyone else on the forum too. God Bless you!

Dear 317;
I am a patient man, and no matter how long it takes for your response, I am willing to wait. Our symtoms seem to be much the same, but mine began immediately after I started taking the one prescription. I will discuss your situation with my neurologist, and any of the doctors that I see in the near future. I have known friends and acquaintances that had problems with abnormal situations caused by small tumors in the brain, but I hesitate to make a comparison with your condition.Did your problem start over a period of time, or was it suddenly as mine was? For me, being so religious, it was so difficult to understand. I felt like I was possessed by a demon. I don’t want to pry, but I am trying to get as much information as possible, so I can pass it on to my neurologist and the other doctors in whom I have great confidence and respect. If you are willing to share, I am willing to care, because I truly know how you feel and what you are going througn. It is not easy by any means, and your pain is my pain. I have been and always have been sympathetic for those that are afflicted in any way. I hope and pray that someone, myself or others can make a difference concerning your dilemma, whether it be by prayer or information that sets you free.
I will continue to pray for you. I have your 317 on my little shrine along with a litany of others, but I am more specific with you and Mike, who is also asking for prayers on this site.
People ask me why I love to pray, and I tell them if you lived in fox holes, bunkers and trenches, and had people shooting at you night and day, you would become religious in short order.
God Bless you and may each minute bring about total healing.
Dusan

How are you doing 317?

Just know you are not alone in these temptations. I have experienced them too… at first it is very disconcerting which is what the evil one wants to do, to get you off the piety track. I viewed them as scruples I had to overcome. We know certain things our faith tells us, take this as an opportunity to live your faith.

  1. *]Disown the thoughts… Tell yourself they are not your thoughts so you are not sinning and take comfort in that knowledge. This is what the Church teaches… believe it and act accordingly. If they are not your thoughts, why let them bother you? Shrug them off. This is the offensive you take against the devil.

*] Have you thought of confiding this problem with your husband. It is no shame you know. Every spiritual person is attacked this way… when we are getting close to God… this is how the devil attacks. Don’t be ashamed. Face it. Walk through the fire. Ask his help to pray with you. Prepare him that he may face repugnance as well but united you are invincible. It will help you to bond more too. A praying couple is stronger and you also get to exercise the gift of the Sacrament of Matrimony.

*]Avail yourself to Holy Hour once a week and keep this hour as an Hour of thanksgiving. You would need your husband’s support in this. Perhaps he will come with you. Take the most difficult hour, if these temptations are still persisting. Don’t read Scripture… but try mental prayer. Pray to God in Spirit… see St Teresa of Avila on mental prayer below. Learn more about mental prayer. Take small steps as you are wife and mother… tend to your vocation first and instead of watching TV… give up some TV time to spiritual reading. Don’t overdo it or cause anyone to take notice… otherwise you will develop another scruple.

*]Praise God for His goodness towards you… this is an advice by the Blessed Virgin, to fight impure thoughts recorded by Blessed Mary Agreda in her book City of God. Bless Him for these temptations as opportunities for you to prove your love for Him. Go about serenely doing what you need to do, even though you are in turmoil interiorly… See them as tests and mentally track your progress and see how you respond each time you experience these temptations… If you are not making progress… then pray this way: Lord if you wish me to have this cross, please grant me the grace to carry it graciously otherwise I ask you to remove it. I know you will not give me a cross I cannot bear. Thy will be done. " Say the prayer even if you do not mean it. or say: Jesus I trust in You. [over and over until the temptation subsides] Pray mentally and remain calm and serene outwardly.

*]Know that Jesus is with you. Tell yourself that. You have no one to fear. He has triumphed over everything… then why fear? Know that it takes a while for our intellect to digest these faith facts. So be patient with yourself. Mentally pray to Him to give you the grace you need to fight these temptations. St. Teresa of Avila recommends mental prayer at this time because the devil cannot read your mind… only God can. Remember that. Nevertheless the devil knows you better than you know yourself… so that is why you need to keep a poker face and do not show that you are afraid or experiencing turmoil. You will begin to experience God’s peace. As you put effort forth… God will come to your aid and you will overcome.

*] Tell yourself that God will not test you beyond your capability or give you a cross you cannot carry. Keep reminding yourself on this article of faith believe it and practice it.

*]Pray the Rosary daily - entrust yourself to our Lady’s protection. Fast on Wednesdays and Fridays till you overcome these temptations

Get the book The Three Conversions in the Spiritual Life…it will help you understand how the devil, world and flesh tempt you and how you need to prepare yourself to fight temptations. As you progress, you will welcome trials to prove your love to God.

317,

I haven’t read through all the responses in this thread so I don’t know if this has been said, but it sounds to me like you’ve got a classic case of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (known as OCD). There are treatment options available, but I couldn’t tell you how effective they actually are.

To fight those biological responses I would recommend “movement”. Try not to remain seated or lying down, keep yourself moving, walk, clean or jump. It’s my personal experience.

Dear 317, I must convey what the priest told me about my situation and going to communion. He did not ask me to go, he nearly commanded me to go. He told me I was not sinning as long as I did not submit to the thoughts or temptation. He stated that, not going to communion is like separating yourself from our Lord and that it will give you the strength to resist the evil one. Do not deprive yourself of the Body and Blood of our Lord if you do not yield to the temptations that pursue you. That is what satan wants. Do not be afraid or ashamed to talk to your priest or even another priest, and explain to him what the circumstances are.You are blaming yourself for something you might be, or probably not be responsible for. You have to reach out to all possibilities, and the greatest is a priest and the Holy Catholic Church.
I am certain you will find great consolation discussing the matter with a priest.
God bless and help you!

Dear 317,

I have heard of this condition. I am aware of a woman - specifically, a married woman who goes to daily Mass and who says the rosary daily - who has the condition exactly, including every detail you mentioned. The thoughts you mentioned that you have conquered were most likely from the devil, but the later physical sensation triggered by prayer is much different. You need to investigate whether this is a gift from God.

The woman I mentioned, we will call her Lisa, first experienced what you described almost two years ago. She went to Mass at a different parish that she is used to. The priest did something a little different at the consecration and the woman got scared maybe it wasn’t a valid consecration. She thought to herself before Communion how pathetic she must be because she would not even be able to recognize if it was the Lord or just bread she would be receiving. She had heard some people have that gift, but she did not.

Immediately after placing the Host in her mouth, something supernaturally lit up her body. Intense physical pleasure combined with the greatest love she had ever felt for Jesus on the Cross permeated her body, especially in the feminine organs. It was truly God. The sensation lingered for at least 15 minutes after Mass. It was the most surreal experience she ever had. She had never heard of such a thing and kept wondering all day why her feminine organs were so affected. She was confused. Was God trying to tell her something? She even thought maybe God was trying to tell her she was conceiving or something, but time would tell she was not pregnant. She decided it was just a gift and she would cherish this one-time Eucharistic experience for the rest of her life. (by the way, it turned out the priest did not do anything that would invalidate a consecration, she just wasn’t used to this priest)

She expected she would never have this sensation again, but it came back several months ago and she has had it every day since. Coincidentally, it started up the same exact day that she made the biggest sacrifice of her life for God (I do not want to reveal it on this forum but along the lines of say, giving away all of one’s money or making a vow or something). Starting on this exact day that she surrendered herself more fully to God, every time she would start praying the rosary, the overwhelming sensation of intense pleasure would appear out of nowhere. Same with the Divine Mercy chaplet. To her great surprise and shock, she realized that just a passing thoughts about Jesus while watching TV triggered the sensation. Each time, she sensed the presence of God.

Soon, she realized that reading Scripture also triggered it. It also started happening after receiving Communion starting the next time she went to Mass. She wakes up every day amazed all over again about this surreal experience that awaits her. She always knew it was Jesus because of the original Eucharistic experience. She also knew it was Jesus because whenever it would start up she would tell Jesus how much she loved Him and wanted to follow Him and not sin and He would seem to respond by increasing the intensity or by pulsating within her in a very unsubtle way. She always stays very still when this happens, because if she moves, the sensation goes away. It never tempts her into any sin. She does not struggle with sins against chastity, believing that those sins have been conquered permanently by grace. The gift never leads to orgasm, only increased intensity as she prays more deeply. She feels she does not deserve this gift but thanks God every day for it.

Interestingly enough, prior to receiving this gift, she got some of those same thoughts you mentioned (unwanted mental images but NOT physical sensation, completely different), just for a split second here and there during the previous year. She believes grace has completely conquered this. She wonders if the devil knew God was going to give her this gift and tried to block it in some way. Also, at the time, there were areas of her life that were not completely surrendered to God which could have given the devil more leeway.

I have heard of saints and cloistered nuns having intense physical and almost violent pleasure during ecstasy, so maybe this gift is just 1% of 1% percent of what all those Carmelite cloistered nuns experience. Perhaps it is something that points to heaven where our eternal Spouse will be Jesus. Our bodies are temples of the Holy Spirit so maybe God sometimes allows us to sense His presence, which is always in us anyway. Maybe the fact that we are part of the Body of Christ has something to do with it. I don’t know. Maybe God wants you to know you are on track with your spiritual life.

If you want to find out if you are experiencing the sacred presence of Jesus, why don’t you try this: Next time you are praying and the sensation starts, just relax, maybe lie down on a couch while holding a blessed rosary with joy and tell Jesus you love Him so much, you adore Him, you want Him to come closer, you are so happy you will be with Him forever. Tell Him that if He is present, you want to feel His love even more intensely and you want Him to fill you with more grace. If the sensation becomes more intense, it is probably the Lord. You could try this same thing next time you receive Communion.

Wow, PrayerWomanGlen, I am almost speechless. You have described me exactly. I have experienced everything you described, except I don’t have it with the Eucharist because I have not gone to communion for so long. I have them with the passing thoughts, when I even think about praying, when I hear scripture being read, etc. I have never thought about my situation from this perspective. I have fought them with every ounce of my being for so many years, that I never considered them as possibly gifts. I have tried to seperate the feelings from prayer because they don’t seem to belong together.

I would appreciate any insight/opinions on this from anyone else out there. I am kind of confused.

Thanks.

PS to everyone: Regardless of the origin of these, your prayers are working. I have had more peace this week than I have had in the last 10 years. I still have the feelings, but do not feel responsible or guilty for them anymore. I feel I have grown immensely closer to God. For the first time I was able to pray the Divine Mercy Chaplet in less than 40 minutes because I was not completely obsessed with fighting those feelings throughout my praying. PRAISE BE TO GOD!
