Why are there so many more female Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion than male EMHCs?

Enough men have not stepped forward. I believe the Lord established the all male priesthood
to assure that men would be involved.

I THINK the reason is because in many diocese and parishes, women were specifically encouraged to volunteer for these roles.

I think the women who initially volunteered for these roles in many parishes (not all of them) were the women who wanted to see more opportunities for women, so they jumped at the opportunity.

Therefore, I think this created a subconscious idea in some parishes that lectures & EMHCs were primarily for women to participate in the Liturgy.

Again, this is just a theory that I heard on Catholic Radio.

God Bless

I haven’t actually counted, but my impression of my parish is that it’s either about 50/50, or slightly more men.

Men die younger.

Since girls and women were restricted from doing pretty much anything like serving in the altar…I think they are more eager to volunteer because there was a time they would have been able to do it. It may even out more in another generation?

Because at your parish there are more women who volunteer. Each parish is different.

Women tend to get more involved in church activities in a lot of places. Unless the church is in a prison, army base, mining camp or perhaps has an all boys high school attached to it- its just a lot easier to recruit gals for the job.

It’s surprising that no one has mentioned the “feminization” of the Church.
😁😁😁

I never noticed if there are more men or women EMHCs in the parishes in my area. It’s seems there are equal amounts of both. I dislike receiving communion from them be they men or women. I always try to sit in the front section so I can receive from the priest.

Not to sound rude or anything but…does it really matter? More women simply volunteer for these roles tbh

Look at the Gospels. The women supported Jesus out of their means. They lined the via dolorosa as he struggled with His cross. They stood at a respectful distance as the naked Jesus died on the cross. He was always surrounded by women.

In short, they have more religious common sense and humility than men, IMO.

Its certainly not a crisis one way or another. But its interesting to notice and guess the reason for disproportionate numbers of one demographic group or another in any role, or business- particularly when it is something open to all.
