“They [the emus] are really friendly, they don’t hurt anyone … and they are very photogenic if they think there is going to be food coming with it,” she said.

LOL

For anyone who hasn’t seen an emu in person – they are BIG!! And, oh, those claws!
That’s pipsqueak compared to Southern Cassowaries. Those are larger and have a hard helmet-like bone protruding from the top of their heads, and a large spike on their feet that can disembowel anyone who gets too close to them. And, unlike the emus, the cassowaries are mean. Temperamental mean. They don’t play nice.

A lot of people here in the US have trouble pronouncing EMU, many say EE(MOO), it’s pronounced EEM(YOU).

Well somebody had better call Liberty Mutual because they persist with their Limu Emu commercials (pronounced LEE-MOO EEE-MOO).

Not an emu but a Southern Cassowary. 😲

This part of the country is nearly all cattle country. And some people keep llamas with their herds because they hate any kind of canine and will attack them pretty much on sight. At one time, people kept emus for the same reason, but that seems to have disappeared. Maybe they’re not as mean as llamas.

It isn’t as if cattle can’t protect themselves against canines. Other than the occasional “lost calf”, they are rarely prey, even by local mountain lions because the mothers can be ferocious in defense of their calves and faster on their feet than you would ever dream. The llamas are kept to attack the dogs of cattle thieves. That’s how cattle thieves gather up cattle; with well-trained dogs. I guess the emus just didn’t make the cut.

The problem was the emus were knicking the toast as soon as it popped up from the toaster, and stealing other pub food. Emus can be quite mean too.
