Here in my town. This is not my parish, but I do visit for Mass sometimes.
A new community of the Congregation of the Oratory of St Philip Neri is to be established in Bournemouth.
The community, which will be inaugurated at the Sacred Heart church in September, will be the sixth Oratory to be set up in England.
Bishop Philip Egan of Portsmouth, who invited the Oratorians to Bournemouth, said they would form part of a “major evangelisation drive”.
The centre will be an “Oratory in formation” and will be made up of Fr Dominic Jacob, co-founder of the Oxford Oratory, Fr Peter Edwards and Fr David Hutton.
More details here.

This is very unexpected to me at least, but it should be good news in evangelising a town that can frankly use all the help it can get in that regard. May God bless the Oratorians in their new mission here in Bournemouth.

This is good for the Catholics, and everyone else, in your city. May it flourish. I have read a little about “oratories” in England, though I know little about them. Where I live, (USA) an “oratory” is what they call a church which is no longer a parish, but the diocese is reluctant to close, either because it is a historic building or in a remote location. They have some church services there, either every week or only on occasion, but lack the full support that a “parish” is required to provide.

It sounds like this is a lot more, I wish it well.

Just as FYI - what you state here is not exactly true.

While your diocese might call downgraded church buildings which are not longer a main parish church an oratory, not all dioceses do the same.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia calls those church buildings “worship sites.” While others call them chapels or even missions.

In regards to Oratory (as in St Philip Neri) the Oratory (capital O) refers to the parish Church (or chapel) where the Oratorians (the confraternity founded by St Philip Neri) resides.

The Archdiocese of Philadelphia has one at St Francis Xavier Parish in Philadelphia archphila.org/parishes/7840.php

My comment about “oratories”, as opposed to special churches sponsored by the Oratorians, is of course trivial compared to the ministry offered by that community. We could use 100 or 1000 more of them in the US, and probably UK. If anyone wants to comment further, I would appreciate learning more about actual ministry done through that religious community, in the specific churches and maybe other ministries entrusted to them.
