English archbishop condems UK PM's same-sex 'marriage' proposals

Prime Minister David Cameron is facing a backlash from religious leaders in the UK after saying he supported plans to legalise same-sex ‘marriage.’

Archbishop Peter Smith of Southwark said the state must not attempt to redefine marriage.

“Whilst we welcome the Prime Minister’s support of marriage, family life and especially the care of children, the proposed redefinition of marriage cannot be right,” he said.

I have several questions relating to your post. Bishop Conry: do you mean Rt. Rev. Kieran Conry, Bishop of Arundel and Brighton? When and where did he make this comment?

Vincent Nichols has also said the same thing - ie that the Catholic Church supports Civil partnerships for Gay people but not marriage. That was part of the official response from the Catholic Church in England to the consultation on this issue.

I know. And, it was not the first time as well. Are you familiar with the replies he gave to the BBC the day after the Holy Father’s visit?

It is little wonder that many catholics are confused about their faith when there is such poor and confusing catechesis from our bishops’ actions and statements. The bishops fought hard against the UK government’s move to oblige all adoption agencies, even Catholic ones, to accept as adopters men or women living in same sex relationships. The bishops asked for an exemption for the Catholic agencies. The UK government refused. This was an example of the bishops making a stand for the Catholic faith.

On the other hand the bishops support civil partnerships for same sex couples. This is contrary to Catholic teaching so why do the bishops support this? They are mistaken when they say the Catholic Church supports this. What they mean is that the episcopal conference of England and Wales supports this.

And, many Catholics in the pew know that and the BCEW know that there are many Catholics in the pew know their catechism very well. However, Catholics have been publicly told to “hold their tongue”. 😦 That leaves faithful Catholics in a bind when following Church teachings and respecting the office of the Bishop. That being the case, it appears that many are caught in a similar fray as in the 1500’s. St John Fisher and Archbishop Cranmer come to mind.

Regrettably; its nothing typically out of the ordinaire when compared to most world political leaders adopting the same stance on same-sex marriage. And not that it makes it in anyway morally right, but what really can world leaders do anyways when the majority of lobbyist who are the ones pushing for same-sex marriage will eventually make it a huge political agenda in the next federal election. World leaders are bending to that pressure whether they agree with same-sex marriage or not.

Well, I’m sorry, but holding one’s “tongue” is not an option as a practicing and faithful Roman Catholic. I’m afraid I would have to respectfully disobey. Defending the gospel of Jesus Christ in the truth of His Church does, I believe, trump obedience.
