The leader of the Catholic Church in England and Wales, who will be made a cardinal by Pope Francis next month, is to visit Glasgow’s St Andrew’s Cathedral tomorrow.
The Holy Father announced yesterday that Archbishop Vincent Nichols of Westminster would be one of 19 new cardinals created at next month’s Consistory of Cardinals at the Vatican. Archbishop Nichols will be in Glasgow for the annual meeting of presidents and vice presidents of the Bishops’ Conferences of England and Wales, Ireland and Scotland. Archbishop Philip Tartaglia of Glasgow, president of the Bishops’ Conference of Scotland warmly, congratulated Archbishop Nichols on his pending ‘red hat.’
The annual meeting of presidents, vice-presidents and general secretaries of Scotland, England and Wales, and Ireland is expected to discuss matters of common interest. This years they are expected to look at subjects including Evangelii Gaudium; the forthcoming Synod of Bishops and the challenges faced by the conferences in the various legal jurisdictions due to legislation on same-sex ‘marriage.’
