ShanPO,
Nor is it just john who tells believers thus, does not Paul, tell us; “The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs-heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.” - Romans 8:16-17 ESV.
It is clear from this and from the previous scriptures posted, as well as many more not posted, the apostles clearly did tell christians they were assured of their inheritance. I’m also not sure how “in john it says…” Can be summed up as “but using that logic”? Surely the scriptures of God are authoritative in swaying our thoughts.
What do you define as “good works”? Even this week I have been reading Luther’s “Treatise on Good Works”, in which he lays out just what “good works” are in the life of one loved by Jesus. The works to me, based upon scriptural backing, simply flow out of the Christians new life. Did Paul, who knew the love of Jesus, sure of his eternal salvation, simply decide therefore he could sin? Does not he emphatically reject this in Romans 6?
A true saving faith in Jesus will lead to a new life, as Paul demonstrates in Romans 6; “But thanks be to God, that you who were once slaves of sin have become obedient from the heart to the standard of teaching to which you were committed, and, having been set free from sin, have become slaves of righteousness. I am speaking in human terms, because of your natural limitations. For just as you once presented your members as slaves to impurity and to lawlessness leading to more lawlessness, so now present your members as slaves to righteousness leading to sanctification.” - Romans 6:17-19 ESV.
The one who knows the utter love of The Lord, will become a slave to righteousness. A perfect obidience? No, but then Paul deals with that in Romans 7…
Kind regards
Lincs.
