Episcopal Clergy Tear gassed

I’m not defending anything. I’m saying that we have heard one side of the story in a highly politically charged environment, 200ft from the White House (basically the most political city in the US) when many parties have reason to use the facts towards their own predetermined ends. If one is seeking the truth, immediately listening to partisan sources as the absolute truth, without considering the facts from both sides, is not the most responsible approach.
EXACTLY.

I’m reading both sides and sure enough the other side is tis: Fires, Looting, Tear Gas: DC in Turmoil Following 3rd Night of Protests – NBC4 Washington

Burning, vandalism, fires in government buildings and the historic church, windows smashed.

This is not ‘peaceful protest.’

I have no idea if those pushed back or tear-gassed (or whatever the police did) were genuinely peaceful or not but after three nights of violence and destruction, a reasonable person has cause to think it might happen again.

One other thing I came across was the comment that President Trump may not have had anything to do with the police’s decision on how to make the area safe.

So this. In addition since we are on the topic of authority, we are required to follow legitimate civil authority as well.

The facts I’ve heard is that law enforcement ordered the park cleared earlier, which was not followed. The park service reported that the protesters were becoming hostile. If that’s true then a certain amount of higher order force would be required. However we also have a president, and political parties, and media, etc. who like to play politics with everything
I personally find responsible to consider all of these facts, as well as those that might come in more than 24 hours after before making a determination.

Having worked (and hopefully never having to work again) a handful of protection details, I can say without a doubt that the President had zero (name removed by moderator)ut on how his protective detail chose to make the area safe.

The President (or his handlers) tell the USSS where they are going and when and the USSS makes the area safe.

I don’t think anyone cares at this point. They made up their minds when they heard about it and aren’t going to change them.

Stop believing the left’s lies.
There have definitely been a lot of those during the riots just from the media alone.

If we started to go through them I think we could reach quite a high number.

Should we?

I’m with you. Just trying to inject a smidge of sanity into the discussion…

Wow. I normally enjoy the BB. But this is both inaccurate and downright bigoted. I take a class at the Episcopal Church, and they know more about the Scriptures than most of my fellow and sister lay Catholics, a sad reflection of the latter.
But the best weapon of all to use is the relentless and viscous taunting of the French Knights: “Go away, or I shall taunt you for the second time!”
Hopefully that’s reserved for us Catholics. 😉

Fact: excessive force was used on Americans in DC…
Here are the facts:

"On Monday, June 1, the USPP worked with the United States Secret Service to have temporary fencing installed inside Lafayette Park. At approximately 6:33 pm, violent protestors on H Street NW began throwing projectiles including bricks, frozen water bottles and caustic liquids. The protestors also climbed onto a historic building at the north end of Lafayette Park that was destroyed by arson days prior. Intelligence had revealed calls for violence against the police, and officers found caches of glass bottles, baseball bats and metal poles hidden along the street.

To curtail the violence that was underway, the USPP, following established policy, issued three warnings over a loudspeaker to alert demonstrators on H Street to evacuate the area. Horse mounted patrol, Civil Disturbance Units and additional personnel were used to clear the area. As many of the protestors became more combative, continued to throw projectiles, and attempted to grab officers’ weapons, officers then employed the use of smoke canisters and pepper balls. No tear gas was used by USPP officers or other assisting law enforcement partners to close the area at Lafayette Park. Subsequently, the fence was installed.

Throughout the demonstrations, the USPP has not made any arrests. The USPP will always support peaceful assembly but cannot tolerate violence to citizens or officers or damage to our nation’s resources that we are entrusted to protect."

Sounds like a reasonable, measured and professional response to the actions of street punks (who got off easy).

Let’s take a look at the footage.

Something has just happened to incite the police to start pushing people back. Mostly likely a threat of violence.

A police office in that situation is making his way up the street trying to keep the wall intact and prevent harm to himself, his fellow officers, and yes, also the protesters.

He passes by a large object that was obstructing his view and is immediately confronted by an unknown group of people with a man holding a massive object that is, from the officer’s perspective, high enough above his head to cause damage if dropped. Add to that the fact that these people were disobeying the order to move in a highly charged, tense situation, do you not see how such a reaction might be natural, if not warranted. They don’t get a free pass to disobey police instruction just because they’re the press.

I’m not excusing what happened there, I think it was excessive, but I am tired of the media painting the cops as the bad guys in all of this. They are dealing with the imminent threat of riot (because, as much as some people don’t want to admit it, the riots have all happened where there have been protests.), they are dealing with the knowledge that multiple cops are being killed as a result of these riots (we’re up to eleven confirmed dead from these riots, four of whom have been servicemen/cops), they are having to do their best to protect each other and the legitimate protesters, ALL while keeping any eye out for any signs of actual rioting behavior… you cannot even comprehend the level of stress they’re under.

That was incredible. He could have just as easily turned him down the street. His first move was to strike him with the side of the shield like it was an impact weapon. This is the type of free lance police tactics that make brutality a problem.

Yes. There are always political motives and we should all be slow to judge.

This, sadly, is true. We must ALL be willing to slow down, spend some time listening, and learn from many sources. But many people choose the side that fits their ‘party’ or that their side of the ideological aisle is pushing, and no other information is relevant.

I currently am watching people downplay the fire in Richmond in which the firefighters had to fight against rioters to try to save a child. They support the protests, therefore they support the rioters, therefore they’re downplaying attempted murder, claiming it’s not really the way the chief of police said it was.

When otherwise sane people can now downplay what amounts to attempted murder of a child–we better all get down on our knees and pray for this country. We’re losing our soul.

Attacking an Australian news crew? Did you see the officer swing the club at them as they were fleeing? A measured and professional response?
Your darn right! Those clowns were dressed like a couple of Anifa punks, hiding around a corner and ignoring clear orders to vacate the area. So that cop, having been dealing with that level of violence for days, rocks, bottles and acid being thrown at them, finding stashes of bats and bricks, people trying to take their guns from them, suddenly has two people right on top of him, carrying a large object and looking like an ambush… you’re darn right jumping on them like that was the measured and appropriate thing to do. That cop showed incredible restraint, and they should count themselves lucky they got off so easily. What, you think that he had time to ask them politely if they could please show him their press passes if it wasn’t too much trouble? Please, child…

The guy who shot that video - did you notice that he didn’t get jumped on? You know why? It’s because he backed up as the police line approached! If those two are stupid enough to do what they did they need to find a different line of work, they’re gonna get themselves hurt.

According to the US govt, they did NOT use tear gas, regardless of what the media keeps saying. The US Parks service says that smoke canisters were used, not tear gas.

Also, the govt says they gave the protestors 3 warnings to clear the path.

It’s also worth noting that the pastor of St. John’s was being interviewed at 7PM by FoxNews, right afterwards. He had no idea that the President even walked over to St. John’s church. The church doors were locked.

I wonder if the White House planned (without calling St. John’s) to go inside, but the doors were locked because the priests were NOT there?
Smoke cannisters are also designed to irritate, I dont think it really matters in the end which one was used, it does not negate what was done. If people mistook smoke cannisters for tear gas fair enough, but still.
I would not know the difference, I am sure a lot of people would not.
The clergy was outside, before being moved like that, if the president wanted to go in, all he had do was ask them. Why would he not expect the church to be closed with the protesting and rioting going on.

Not one person was using social distancing in that walk over, and the virus hangs in the atmosphere for some time, this entire situation is an invitation for a new outbreak.

Does the President even attend a church service every Sunday. If so what is his regular church. That is a genuine question.

They are not practicing social distancing. Already there have been 100,000 americans dead from covid-19 and now with these protestors not practicing social distancing, thousands more will be infected with this deadly and highly contagious disease and many will fall dead because of it.
When the Bishops of the respective churches, both Catholic and Episcopal come out and denounce the actions of the president-
Whoever said so and endorsed the protesters who were not practicing social distancing shows their lack of regard for those who will get covid-19 and die from it. Why do you suppose that the CDC and other health officials have come out in favor of social distancing. This is supposedly a deadly and highly contagious disease and for anyone, no matter who, to come out and endorse protesting without practicing social distancing means in effect that they are negligently forgetting about the thousands of people who will die a horrible death from the covid-19 because of these protests.
