While the article correctly defines infallibility in the last paragraph, the headline and rest of the article, epically the journalist blogger mentioned, re disappointing.
Error in book shows Pope not infallible

Catholic bloggers reading his “Jesus of Nazareth,” which went on sale in Italy and Germany on Monday, have taken up the Pope’s invitation to criticise his work by pointing out that he wrongly identified a U.S. theologian.

In a paragraph citing important recent books about Jesus, he identifies Notre Dame University professor John Meier as a member of the Jesuit order of Catholic priests. Meier is not a Jesuit but a priest of the New York diocese.

“The Pope is not infallible – there’s a little mistake in his last book,” Italian religion journalist Sandro Magister said in his blog Settimo Cielo (Seventh Heaven).

That seems like a really pointless article. I hope the Catholics in it where being tongue in cheek, otherwise their utter misunderstanding of papal infallibility is just sad.

And I’d say if that’s the only mistake in a 400+ page book, that’s not bad! Meticulous indeed!

The last paragraph of the article says it all:

“Papal infallibility, which says the Pope cannot err in declaring doctrine on faith and morals, is rarely invoked and would not apply to this book. But catching the meticulous Pope in a mistake proved too tempting for the bloggers to pass up.”

And too tempting for Maranatha to resist posting a thread about, and too tempting for the rest of us to resist commenting on.:hmmm:

This is silly and a total misunderstanding of papal infallibility.

Personally, I’ve always liked the George Carlin line from his youth…
To a priest:
Father, if God is all powerful can he create a rock that he cannot lift?
Now there’s a probing question.😃

Actually, I was looking for a place to ask this question (not that is has to do with infalliabilty): I was listening to Bill Bennett’s radio show on Monday morning (Morning in America), and I caught the tail end of his comments on the Pope’s new book, which is apparently quite critical of capitalism. Has anyone read the book or does anyone know what Bennett and his guys were talking about?

Most, if not all, Popes have been critical of capitalism.

John
Can he create a triangle that has 4 sides?
Can he create a star that is dark?
Can he create a fire that is cold?

The answer is no not because he cant do these things but because the statements are oxymoron’s.

such a statment shows a lack of understanding of God.
