[ Pale, Soft, Exudative meat, or PSE meat, describes a carcass quality condition known to occur in pork, beef, and poultry. It is characterized by an abnormal color, consistency, and water holding capacity, making the meat dry and unattractive to consumers. The condition is believed to be caused by abnormal muscle metabolism following slaughter, due to an altered rate of glycolysis and a low pH within the muscle fibers. A mutation point in the ryanodine receptor gene in pork,[1] associated to stress levels prior to slaughter are known to increase the incidence of PSE meat.

Although the term “soft” may look positive, it refers to raw meat. When cooked, there is higher cook loss and the final products is hard, not juicy.[2] ]

Yes that’s true…inflammation is also a problem and the thing with these studies is that we don’t know what else these people are eating…only that they eat red meat too…it’s quite possible that they eat a crazy amount of fried food (carbs) along with their meat.

But, yes, back on topic…another ethical thing I am becoming increasingly uncomfortable with is the extreme amount of waste that the fast-food restaurants (mainly) seem to create on a daily basis. They throw out alot of perfectly fine food just b/c it’s a few days old. My husband managed a fast food chain for years and it was ridiculous the amount of waste it creates.

I think that we, as a society, need to shift away from this fast food chain business and start more local sustainable farms…and this could include ethical meat, dairy and egg farms as well. People need jobs for sure but not at the expense of the environment, health and inhumane practices that are apart of the restaurant industry.
 
I have to say that I can´t buy the pricey bio-sealed meat, we have simply not enough money.
We eat meat rarely, sometimes one time per week, sometimes we have no meat for 2 weeks. I cook everything fresh for most time of the month as I have the time at the moment, it´s cheaper and healthy. Completely skipping meat would be unhealthy for me due to some medical issues, and I accept to buy the cheap meat then. If I earn more money hopefully one day, we will buy local and from the farmer directly.

The question isn’t so much whether it’s ethical to eat an egg, or whether it’s ethical to support an egg industry that used human trafficking as a means to get cheap labor. In my opinion, not eating commercially produced eggs isn’t going to work unless a massive number of people agreed to it. I think a better solution is to require investigation into this particular situation that appears to be breaking laws we already have. Homegrown eggs are very easy to obtain in the community where I live, however, there are many people who only have Walmart as an option to purchase eggs, which are a healthy and cheap source of protein.
 
I like that post, Colonel. I think perhaps those attitudes are reinforced with meat consumption. I am not sure if they started with it.
 
Yes, very unsure and inconvenient. You can see how such conscious eating becomes a penance, a spiritual discipline if done with the right intentions and frame of mind.
 
I ate some fish the other day at a luncheon. So I am about 95% vegan with allowances for special occasions. It is sometimes very hard and counter cultural. At a Mexican restaurant I get vegetable fajita but don’t ask what all is in the tortilla and chips.
 
I live on a homestead. Animals make great pets, great friends and great meals.
 
Trappist are vegetarians, not vegans.

The eat dairy, eggs and fish on occasion.

Let people eat what they see fit for their needs without shaming them.
 
Predators have their eyes on the front of their heads, where prey have their eyes on the side.

Look at humans and it explains why we’re omnivores.

Do you extend this ethical treatment of animals regarding food to the clothes you wear and other material possessions?
 
I acknowledge my inconsistency.
I accompanied a few people who were fishing on a boat, and I saw how the fish flipped and flapped around on the floor of the boat after being caught. Also, I feel sorry for the live lobsters as they are put live into a boiling pan of water to be cooked.
 
I never liked fishing even as a kid. I hated skewering the worm also.
