EU to propose drastic flu plans

The European Union will not hesitate to propose “drastic measures” to fight the spread of bird flu if current safeguards prove insufficient, EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso has said.

Bird flu has been found in Romania and Turkey, and the EU has banned all poultry imports from those countries. It also recommended that member states increase biosecurity measures on farms, and implement early detection systems in risk areas, such as wetlands.

“We should avoid alarmism, but at the same time I think we should … use very serious precaution on this situation and monitor it constantly,” Barroso told reporters during a visit to Stockholm, Sweden.

‘We should avoid alarmism’ 🙂

Yes, we should, but I seriously doubt the Daily Mail will 🙂

Probably not…it sells papers. 🙂

What the Daily Mail publishes isn’t nearly as troubling as what is coming from the UN and WHO.

The UN’s Flu Czar, Dr. David Nabarro, estimates 5 to 150 million deaths. He bases that on the 1918 pandemic.

World Health Organization’s Dick Thompson stands by 2 to 7 million deaths. He bases that on the 1968 outbreak.

Neither one uses the current mortality figure for H5N1 which is much higher than 1918 and 1968.

Why start believing the UN now? 🙂 Seriously though, what is the point of worrying? You can’t do a single thing about it.

Of course no-one can know what the mortality rate of the combined virus that is capable of being transmitted between humans will be, if and/or when it gets created, until it happens.

I don’t get it. This is a fascinating scientific and geo-political puzzle. I’m not worried at all. Don’t know anyone who is. But if you scan the headlines this morning, one article after the next is about how there is no reason to panic. What makes these articles worse than the patroninzing tone is they often have factual errors. That doesn’t engender confidence.

Wish the press would report more on events and less on what they think people feel or should feel.

There are precautions to take but they are the same ones people should take in any flu season. Influenza A does kill nearly 40,000 a year in the USA. It is more than a cold.

Agreed, newspapers don’t do scientific accuracy well, or often at all. Telling us not to panic reminds me of Jones in Dad’s Army. ‘Don’t Panic! Don’t Panic!’ 🙂

Yes - the press is very good at telling us what to think. I do try to read news that separates news and opinion, but it isn’t always trivial.

Personally I’m sick of stories saying ‘later this week, so-and-so government minister will say this in a speech.’ Let them say it first! 🙂

Yes, the standard things should be done. Those at risk should be vaccinated as usual. My doctors had the standard poster up when I picked up a prescription this morning.

I read a bird flu question-and-answer article yesterday, here:

my.webmd.com/content/Article/113/110741.htm?pagenumber=1

and one of the things it said was that when a flu virus does mutate so that it can be transmitted from one human to another, the mortality rate is usually far less than when it was in the from-bird-to-human form.
