This is my testimony of the fulfillment of the scripture concerning the Eucharist.
John 6:53: So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves.”
In 2001 I was diagnosed with MS at the age of 38. By the end of that year, I was totally dependant upon a power wheelchair. I won’t go into the details, but will only say I was in the wheelchair until early 2004. During those years of treatment, I was finally able to come ‘out’ of the wheelchair and begin the journey of walking again with the assistance of a walker at first, then graduating to a ‘walking cane.’
Mind you, I was NOT in church at all during this whole time, and this is ‘before’ I converted. My Uncle is Catholic, and would talk to me from time to time. That was back in the day when Mother Angela was really a big deal at EWTN, which I’m fortunate enough that is in my home state and only a 25 minute drive from where I live.
During those years of being in the wheelchair is when I watched EWTN and mostly, Mother Angelica. Her testimony of pain and suffering combined with my Uncle’s testimony of the Catholic Church resonated within my spirit. It was at that time, I felt within my spirit drawn to the Catholic Church.
Fortunately, there just so happened to be a Catholic Church 5 minutes away from me. Since I was now out of the wheelchair, I reached out to that Church and expressed my desire to move forward. I went through the RCIA and was proudly confirmed in 2005. At that time I was overweight because of being in the wheelchair and was just beginning my journey of walking again and being able to move around and gently/lightly exercise as I was able. But I was determined to continue my journey Home and knew that Satan was a lier and I continued the process to join the RCC.
After my Confirmation and I was able to continually week, after week, after week to partake, I noticed that that I was gaining more strength in my legs, had a bit more physical energy and was able to graduate from walker to cane. And today, at this moment, I’m proud to say that I am able more times than not, to walk without the cane.
I believe this to be a true testament of the fulfillment of the scriptures concerning the Eucharist. While it’s true I don’t purport this as a miracle, I certainly do believe that it is a direct truthfulness of John 6:53.
Where Jesus gives us ‘life’ via the Eucharist, by the nourishment of that life, I believe it also gives us strength in other areas of our lives as well. Therefor, I firmly believe within my heart of hearts that the Eucharist played a role in where I am at today as far as my mobility is concerned.
While it’s true I still suffer from the side effects of this illness and am still considered disabled, I truly believe that the Eucharist strengthens me to continue to this day with mobility and being able to live a life more freely as opposed to when I was in the wheelchair.
To God be the Glory!
