I just saw this movie with my daughters (14 & 19). I thought it was GREAT. I did not feel anything bad was said or done with regards to Catholicism (which was a relief). I thought the message was timeless. The message we got was to have faith and be true to God. I do think the movie stressed prayer and I loved when God talked to the wife. I thought that showed a way God answered prayer. Aside from the messages, it was just a fun movie. I would recommend it to anyone. Just my opinion.

I would like to put our :twocents: in.

we just saw it as a family today and the first part was VERY funny and had me laughing soo hard I thought I would choke. Especially the way God was persistant and kept nudging him back…etc.

BUT THEN it went Flop.

He builds the ark. All the animals come. Big bad boys exposed for what they are. People saved from the impending disaster.

BUT the MESSAGE in the end you get from God is the most important thing, the thing that can change the world is random acts of kindness…or ARK. Huh? Don’t get me wrong…you are supposed to do random acts of kindness BUT there are other things too…like prayer. You do not leave with a sense that there was a real conversion in anyone. They just got closer as a family which is important…
The ending was real disapointing. Rent the DVD don’t waste your money at the theatre. In my opinion it ain’t worth it :nope:

The movie is not a white paper on faith, it is meant to be light-hearted with a message. BTW, the world would improve if people performed more acts of random kindness. Do you think our Lord wants us to pray, but to forgte being kind, loving and charitable to our neighbor?

IMO–GREAT MOVIE for the family. It was clean, no language, sex or violence, and it had a great pro-family message.

Don’t listen to the secular critics…the movie is worth seeing. I was very much surprised with this movie…in a very good way. Judge for yourself, don’t let people of no faith make your choices.

IMO–GREAT MOVIE for the family. It was clean, no language, sex or violence, and it had a great pro-family message.

You are right it is an improvement from what has come out of Hollywood but still in my opinion, rent the DVD.
And yes, you are right about acts of random kindness being important…but there is still MORe to God and religion than just acts of kidness…That was my point.
And I feel I have a little bit of faith or try to take care of what I have.

OKay, but it is not meant to be a movie on religion. It is meant to be a light-hearted family movie with a few good messages. I think it is important to support movies that are counter-cultural, otherwise we have no right to complain about how bad the movies are.

I agree, how many movies can we really take the whole family to these days? Not many. For many of us on a budget, this movie at a matinee price is our family fun for the weekend, it only cost us three dollars a person to see it at the matinee and our kids enjoyed it and we didn’t have to worry about dirty words or covering their eyes, etc. finally something we could all enjoy and get out for a bit and have fun, it is a fun movie… it is not supposed to be a Catholic movie… just a fun family movie and I think that is exactly what it is!

I agree, how many movies can we really take the whole family to these days? Not many. I will have to humbly disagree about it being a religious movie. When you have God and a big figure like Noah or reference to him, it is hardly non religious. I also find it amazing that the movie is soo lax in the reference to God and conversations with him. Little reverence. It does reflect our society.
I would call Ratatouille, Nancy Drew and those like them a NONreligious family movie. But not Evan Almighty

The story of the Ark and the flood crosses many religions, and is not specific to the Catholic faith. The makers of the movie had to play to a very wide audience and they did that very well–imo. You seem to want to demand that the movie be some Catholic white paper on Noah’s Ark. The movie did not fcus on religion, it was more focused on the family and that is a very good thing.

Anyway, I did not expect to change your mind, you are set in stone. I only responded to you so others would read a counter point.

Steve Carrell is the poster boy for the new wave of vulgarity out of Hollywood. It’s a trend toward making antiGod garbage that shows no sign of slowing down. I encourage all Catholics to not ignore the cussing, the swearing, the porn, and the lewdness that this man has allowed himself to be involved with.

None of that was in this movie. I am very picky about we allow our daughter to watch and this was a great family movie. The commercials don’t do it justice. I really was pleasantly surprised.

I think the movie was very careful, much more so then other movies. I think the main characters is shown to develop a very real respect for God and for his family. Again, this film is not about religion, it has a religious story as a backdrop, but it is not to be confused with being a religious movie. It was made to be an amusing family movie centered on a well know Bible story that crosses a many faith traditions. At the core of the movie is a man’s struggle with becoming a better husband and father and he does exactly that.

I have to say I am shocked with the tenacity with which you are debating this family friendly movie. There are so few family friendly movies, and most are only marginally friendly to children. There will be a gigantic wave of people going to see Harry Potter, which can easily be argued as being anti-God and anti-religion, yet Evan Almighty contains none of those argument points. It i s simply a clean and fun movie for the entire family. You want it to be a white paper, or something like a tool for Catechists, and it is not any of that.

The main theme of the movie is not about God, it is not about the Ark, it is about a man’s struggle to be a better husband and father. That is the theme of the movie and in today’s culture it is a very good thing to encourage men to be better husbands and fathers. The movie has very, very little to do with the real story of Noah’s Ark, nor does it have much of anything to do with our real God…it is about the growth of one man.

Many Christians publications would back this movie simply because it a rare family friendly movie. The heart of the movie is not about God…it just is not.
